MERRYLL SAYLAN: THIS IS YOUR LIFEThe Center for Art in Wood currently features the work of renowned wood artist MerryllSaylan in an exhibition celebrating the timeline of her career. When she began turning in the1970s, Saylan was one of few women in the craft field. While her contemporaries gravitatedtoward furniture-making and the use of exotic woods, Saylan-who came from a backgroundin modern and contemporary design-focused on surface, using wood as a blank canvas forcompositions in color and texture. Her experiments with stains, pigments, texture, and autobody finishes represented a new approach in the field, with connections to abstractpainting. The exhibition is open through January 19, 2019. Read more about theexhibition.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK "Form and function are primary to design. Two other considerations play a role, especially when designing bottoms:interest or surprise and space for asignature. If all of these elements arecarefully thought-out in the design stage, the bottom will naturally complement thevessel, function is ensured, interest orsurprise exists, and space is available fora signature." ~ Thomas Trager
