It was once against the law for Jews to get tattooed, and it was a crime punishable by the rejection of being buried in a Jewish cemetery. However, post-Holocaust, after countless Jews had been tattooed with numbers against their will by Nazis, this law was no longer enforced. Getting a tattoo by choice is still highly looked down upon in most strict Jewish communities, but is becoming less so with each generation.

Tattoos are a unique form of expression and a significant part of many identities. Body art is major concept of expressing individuality. Tattoos can be of a fond memory or sentimental meaning. Tattoos also express personality and beliefs in a beautiful way. “Tattoos can also be used as conversation starters. When people are asked about their tattoos, they are bound to share a story. Personal identity can be found through tattoos since people are able to get tattooed with whatever they feel represents them; it’s a wonderful thing” (Mota Liliana, Daily Titan, Feb 2015). Tattoos are also used to cover up for bodily imperfections that cause someone to feel self-conscious. “Someone may get a flower tattooed on his or her shoulder because of insecurities about a birthmark. A tattoo will effectively bolster self-esteem” (Mota Liliana, Daily Titan, Feb 2015). Historically, tattoos have been important to certain rituals and traditions. They have been used to weave groups and societies together. Hells Angels members get specific tattoos to create a tighter bond among them.
