About the Book

Many people in the Western world think of India as an inert and distant [grouping] of people and poverty, a combination of the exotic and tragic. This misperception, popularized through years of media stereotyping, conceals reality. In fact, India is a vibrant society with an increasingly vigorous internal dynamic and an increasing influence, directly and indirectly, in the world. Its significance lies not only in its size—some 1200 million Indians are 18 percent of the planetary population—but also in the questions raised by the path India has chosen in domestic and foreign policy. This nation is the largest functioning democracy, with regular and freely contested
elections. During the late 16th and the 17th Centuries, the European trading companies in India competed with each other ferociously. By the last quarter of the 18th Century the English had outdone all others and established themselves as the dominant power in India. The British administered India for a period of about two centuries and brought about revolutionary changes in the social, political and the economic life of the country. The present book provides a definitive account of events and movements that led to the formation of modern, independent India. This book is a good read for the students of Indian modern history and candidates preparing for competitive examinations.

History of Magic and Superstition

About the Book
Contents
Since the emergence of the study of religion and the social sciences, magic has been a central theme in the theoretical literature produced by scholars operating in these academic disciplines. Superstition is a pejorative term for any belief or practice that is irrational - i.e., it arises from ignorance, a misunderstanding of science or causality, a positive belief in fate or magic, or fear of that which is unknown. "Superstition" also refers to religious beliefs or actions arising from irrationality. While we live in a technologically and scientifically advanced age, superstition is as widespread as ever. Throughout history, there have been examples of individuals who engaged in practices that their societies called magic and who sometimes referred to themselves as magicians. Within modern occultism, there are many self-described magicians and people who practice magic. In this environment, the concept of magic has again changed, usually being defined as a technique for bringing about changes in the physical world through the force of one's will. This valuable book discusses the meaning and causes of superstition, and offers a rational examination of astrology, fortune-telling, prophesies, Demonism, and magic.

About the Book
Contents
Feudalism was a set of legal and military customs in mediaeval Europe that structured society in a way that the poorest worked the land and had to pay the rich for the right to do so. Broadly defined, it was a way of structuring society around relationships derived from the holding of land in exchange for service or labour. In its origin, the feudal grant of land had been seen in terms of a personal bond between lord and vassal, but with time and the transformation of fiefs into hereditary holdings, the nature of the system came to be seen as a form of "politics of land". The 11th century in France saw what has been called by historians a "feudal revolution" or "mutation" and a "fragmentation of powers" (Bloch) that was unlike the development of feudalism in
England or Italy or Germany in the same period or later. Feudalism itself decayed and effectively disappeared in most of Western Europe by about 1500, partly since the military power of kings shifted from armies consisting of the nobility to professional fighters (effectively reducing the nobility's power), but also because the Black Death reduced the nobility's hold on the lower classes. The system lingered on in parts of Central and Eastern Europe as late as the 1850s. Russia finally abolished serfdom in 1861. However, even when the original feudal relationships had disappeared, there were many institutional remnants of feudalism left in place. The present book is an effort to understant the origin and growth of feudalism, and deals with the political, economic and social aspect of Indian feudalism. Students of sociology and economics will find this book useful in their graduation courses.

About the Book
Contents
From very early history to modern times, walls have often been necessary for cities to survive in an ever-changing world of invasion and conquest. Some settlements in the Indus Valley Civilization were the first small cities to be fortified. In ancient Greece, large stone walls had been built in Mycenaean Greece, such as the ancient site of Mycenae (famous for the huge stone blocks of its 'cyclopean' walls). Fortifications are military constructions or buildings designed for the defense of territories in warfare, and also used to solidify rule in a region during peace time. Humans have constructed defensive works for many thousands of years, in a variety of increasingly complex designs. The arrival of explosive shells in the 19th century led to yet another stage in the evolution of fortification. Steel-and-concrete fortifications were common during the 19th and early 20th centuries. However the advances in modern warfare since World War I have made large-scale fortifications obsolete in most situations. Through their turbulent and blood-stained history, most castles changed hands many times with the shifting political fortunes of the age. Eventually, the growth of artillery and cannon fire reduced the defensive nature of castles but their administrative, and interestingly, romantic aspects continued to be significant. A palace is a grand residence, especially a royal residence, or the home of a head of state or some other high-ranking dignitary. The present book is an overview at the building of forts and castles, and their uses, throughout history and around the world. This book will be an interesting information guide for students and historians.

The product of painstaking, scholarly and systematic research undertaken in the late 1970's and early 1980's, this book provides a panoramic view of the dynamics of peasant struggles, land reforms and social change in Kerala in general and its northern part Malabar in particular. The author in this well-researched, empirically rich book, begins with the general proposition that land reforms were no liberal gifts from
enlightened governments but have been historical processes necessitated by protracted peasant struggles.

The Mystic Sadhus in India
Bindeshwar Prasad Mandal
About the Book
Contents
Mysticism is the practice of religious ecstasies (religious experiences during alternate states of consciousness), together with whatever ideologies, ethics, rites, myths, legends, and magic may be related to them. It may also refer to the attainment of insight in ultimate or hidden truths, and to human transformation supported by various practices and experiences. During the early modern period, the definition of mysticism grew to include a broad range of beliefs and ideologies related to "extraordinary experiences and states of mind". In modern times, "mysticism" has acquired a limited definition, with broad applications, as meaning the aim at the "union with the Absolute, the Infinite, or God". This limited definition has been applied to a wide range of religious traditions and practices, valuing "mystical experience" as a key element of mysticism. Broadly defined, mysticism can be found in all religious traditions, from indigenous religions and folk religions like shamanism, to organised religions like the Abrahamic faiths and Indian religions, and modern spirituality, New Age and New Religious Movements. This valuable book is the collection of life sketches of famous Indian mystics sadhus.

Hinduism is much misunderstood, not only by non-Hindus but also by Hindus themselves. It has been tried to be defined in terms of rules of purity and pollution, caste hierarchy, Brahminism, idolatry, ritualism, cow-worship, other-worldliness and amorality! That is, anything which Hinduism is not. Some have even doubts if it is a religion at all! This book has, therefore, taken upon itself the task of clearing such doubts and misunderstandings. It explains in Part I what really Hinduism is and what it is not. It involves an exposition of the concept of the Divine and Its relation to the world and the Self, and related Saadhanaa – ways of realizing the Divine as per Hinduism. Hinduism insists on being truthful, compassionate and generous, irrespective of whether one is interested in Saadhanaa. Hence there is a separate chapter on the moral philosophy of Hinduism. Among other things, it goes into social engagement and environmental sensitivity of Hinduism. The book then explains why Hinduism is neither Brahminism nor caste system. With due documentation, it shows that Hinduism is actually opposed to the caste system and its hierarchy.

“This definitive work on Hinduism is marked by high scholarship and penetrating analysis. The book takes a critical look at Hinduism with a rare measure of objectivity and without any rancour towards other religions. It is a masterly documentation of numerous corrective processes helping the Hindu society to assimilate modernity, pluralism and secular modes of governance. Truly, a book Gandhiji, who figures in the subtitle of the book, would be proud of!! ”

About the Book
Contents
Swami Vivekananda one of the greatest sons of modern India, not only gave a revolutionary turn to our struggle for freedom but also suggested the principles for the reconstruction of future independent India. A careful study of his ideas and activities reveal that he was far ahead of his times and was an iconoclast in every arena. He was an ascetic but guided by reason, a Hindu saint but stood for a new religion with Islamic body and Vedantic brain, a patriot to whom Mother India was the goddess, a masiha of the masses who sought to place people of the lower-rung at the helm of national
affairs, a preacher of love who asked his followers to fight against all injustices and intolerance.
