ART & ENVIRONMENT
AND LITURGY PLANNING
FOR ORDINARY TIME We are now entering the Liturgical
Season of “Ordinary Time”—time outside
of the two main seasons of Christmas and
Easter and their preparatory seasons of Ad-
vent and Lent. This first part of Ordi-
nary—ordinal, numbered (there are 34
weeks total) —Time lasts until the begin-
ning of Lent, five weeks from now. As the
Liturgy Planning committee read the scrip-
ture readings for the next several weeks, a
central idea seemed to emerge that we can
reflect on the origins of our call to be a fol-
lower of Christ and what accepting that call
means for the way we live in the world.
We are God's masterpieces! He
crafted us and formed us in the womb as
beautiful, messy, complicated and unique
persons. We can sometimes see ourselves
as plain, ordinary, or unimportant, but He
sees us as a unique manifestation of him-
self. We wanted our art and environment to
reflect the idea that God loves each of us
and ALL parts of us. The nice parts we
show people and the messy parts we want
to hide. We are all multifaceted and all
called to be part of the body of Christ. So
our GREEN streamers (green is the color
for Ordinary Time) are intentionally ran-
dom and a little messy like us! Each piece
reflects an individual person bonded to-
gether with others in the Body of Christ to
form a tapestry of faces of God. And still,
each of us matters to the story and to the
author.

Almighty ever-living God,
who govern all things,
both in heaven and on earth,
mercifully hear the pleading of your people
and bestow your peace on our times.
One wonders how often this same plea has
been sent to God. In the course of countless centuries,
in countless countries, for countless reasons, people
have had to live in fear. Oppression, aggression, war,
terrorism, invasions, armed conflicts, and hostilities
between governments or among peoples have ravaged
the human landscape and have defiled the human spir-
it. In our how homes, jealousy, anger, addictions, and
selfish behavior have destroyed harmony in personal
relationships. Yet, what we all long for is peace—a
state of tranquility which will allow love to grow and
