Faculty Information
OnJuly1,1965,theBoardofRegentsoftheFloridaStateUniversitysystemestablishedadoctoralprograminArtEducationintheDepartmentofArtEducation,FloridaStateUniversity.ThefirstdoctoralstudentswereacceptedinJanuary1966.TheFloridaStateUniversityDepartmentofArtEducationistheoldestdepartmentofitskindintheSouth.Atthistimetherearefewerthan15universitieswithdoctoralprogramsinarteducationintheUnitedStates.ThedistinguishedfacultyintheDepartmentofArtEducationiscomposedof9members,eachofwhomholdsthedoctoraldegree:

Doctoral Admission Requirements and Procedures
ThedoctoraladmissionsrequirementandproceduresaresubjecttoallregulationsspecifiedforgraduatestudiesintheUniversity'sGraduateBulletinfortheacademicyearinwhichthedoctoralstudentfirstmatriculates.Specifically,admissionrequirementsincludeachievinga3.5GPAon4.0scaleonamaster'sdegreefromanaccreditedinstitutionandapercentilerankingof55%ontheVerbaland25%ontheQuantitativeportionsoftheGRE[Pleasecontactthedepartmentforfurtherdetails].Thebaccalaureatedegreemustbefromanationallyaccreditedcollegeoruniversityinart,arteducationorrelatedfields.Deficienciesmaybemadeup.Theapplicantmustbeingoodstandingintheinstitutionofhighereducationlastattended.
Steps Required to Apply Individualsinterestedinapplyingforadmissiontothedoctoralprogramshouldcompletethefollowingsteps:
1. CompletetheapplicationformforadmissiontotheUniversityfoundattheOfficeofAdmissionswebsite:https://admissions.fsu.edu/gradapp/.
2. ProvidetheAdmissionsOfficewithcertifiedcopiesoftranscriptsofallundergraduateandpreviousgraduatecourses.
3. TaketheGraduateRecordExamination[GRE].SeetheDepartment’scurrentrequirementsforGREscoresandadmissionrequirements.Considerationmaybegiventoapplicantswhodonotmeetalloftheserequirements.Deficienciesmaybemadeup.Theapplicantmustbeingoodstandingintheinstitutionofhighereducationlastattended.
4. The Test of English as a Foreign Language [TOEFL]isrequiredofallinternationalstudentswithaminimumscoreof80.
5. Submitthreelettersofrecommendation;atleasttwoofthesethreelettersmustbeacademicinnature[i.e.,professor,advisor,etc.].Personalrecommendations[i.e.,familymember,friendorlovedone],etc.]willnotbeacceptedaspartofthesethree.
6. ProvidethedepartmentwithevidenceofrecentcreativeworkonaCD(notnecessaryforstudentswhowishtopursueadegreeinartsadministration)Evidenceofteachingexcellencethroughstudentproductionand/oreducationalperformance(visuals)mayalsobeincluded.
7. Pleaseprovideanacademicorscholarlywritingsample.Alreadypublishedmaterialsmaybesubmittedtofulfillthisexpectation.
8. Demonstratearecordofatleasttwoyearsofexperiencerelatedtotheareaofconcentration(recommended).
9. Submita1000wordwrittenstatementonapersonalphilosophyonart(s)education,arttherapy,artsadministrationormuseumeducation.

Residency Requirements
Residencyrequirementsforthedoctorofphilosophydegree(Ph.D.)&doctorofeducationdegree(Ed.D.):Afterearningamaster’sdegree,thestudentmustbecontinuouslyenrolledontheUniversitycampusorinoneofitsteachingcentersforaminimumof18graduatesemesterhoursinanyperiodof12consecutivemonths.TheremainingyearsofstudyforeitherthePh.D.orEd.D.neednotbecontinuous,butstudentswhomissmorethanasemester,includingsummer,mustreapplytotheprogram.TheDepartmentmustapprovedoctoralreadmissions,andreadmittedstudentsmayberequiredtodoadditionalcourseworkand/orre---takethecomprehensiveexam,atthediscretionofthemajorsupervisorand/orsupervisorycommittee.Tomaintainfulltimestatus,thestudentmusttake9credithourspersemesterthestudentisenrolled.Astudentwhohascompletedtherequiredcoursework,passedtheComprehensiveExaminationandsubmittedanAdmissiontoCandidacyformtotheOfficeoftheRegistrar,andcontinuestousecampusfacilitiesand/orreceivesfacultysupervision,buthasnotbeenclearedbyManuscriptClearanceshallincludeintherequiredfull---timeloadaminimumoftwocredithoursofdissertationpersemesteruntilcompletionofthedegree.Beforeregisteringfordissertationhours,thestudentmustconsultthemajorprofessorastotheproportionoftimetobedevotedtodissertationwork.

Threeacademicyearsofgraduatestudybeyondthebaccalaureatedegreeareusuallytheminimumrequirement.Allrequirementsforthedoctoraldegreemustbecompletedwithin5calendaryearsfromthetimethestudentpassesthecomprehensiveexaminationorthecommitteewillsetanewcomprehensiveexamination.

Responsibilities Required First Year of the Doctoral Program
Semester 1 Afteradmissiontotheprogram,thestudentwillmeetwiththeappropriateprogramdirectorforageneralorientation.Thisorientationwillincludeaconsiderationofthestudent'sinterests,background,andpossibleareasofconcentrationindoctoralstudy.Onthebasisofthisinitialconference,theprogramdirectorwillschedulethestudent'sfirstsemestercoursework.StudentswillbeexpectedtokeepaRecordofDoctoralStudies(SeeAppendixAorhttp://arted.fsu.edu/about/internal-resources/)anduniversityformscanbefoundat:http://gradschool.fsu.edu/Forms.Duringthefirstsemester,studentsareencouragedtobecomeacquaintedwitheachfacultymemberwithintheDepartmentandtosharecareerinterestsandcurrentresearchprojectswiththem.
Diagnostic Examination. Takenatthestartofthefirstsemesterofdoctoralwork,itassessesthestudent'sabilitytoanalyzeandsynthesizeinformation,tocontrastandcompare,todemonstratecriticalthinking,andtowriteclearlyandlogically.Inaddition,thediagnosticexaminationisdesignedtoassessthedepthofknowledgeofthefieldandacquaintancewithcurrentandpastliteratureandmainissues.Themandatoryexaminationisadiagnostictooltoassessthestudent’sacademicprogress.Adepartmentfacultymemberwillarrangetheexam.Thedepartmentfacultywillthenevaluatetheexaminationandnotifythestudentoftheresults.Theresultsareusedtoguidetheselectionoffurthercourseworkforthestudent.Thegradescaleincludes:pass,aconditionalpass(withconditionslisted),orfail(doctoralstudyisterminated,andstudentisnotpermittedtocontinueintheprogram).
Semester 2 Itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytoplanthecourseworkfortheirsecondsemesterwiththeassistanceoftheprogramdirectorbasedonareviewofprogressinfirst---semestercourses.Duringthesecondsemesterthestudentwillalsoparticipateinthediagnosticexaminationandarrangethesupervisorycommittee.
Supervisory Committee. Duringthesecondsemester,andinconsultationwiththeappropriateprogramdirector,thestudentchoosesamajorprofessorfromtheDepartmentofArtEducationtodirectthedissertationandassumefurtheradvisingresponsibilities.Themajorprofessormustbeamemberofthegraduatefacultywithgraduatestatusandtenure,andhavespecialcompetenceinthestudent'sproposedareaof
concentration.Thedecisionmustbemutuallyagreeduponwiththestudentandthefacultyconcerned,tothenbeapprovedbythechairuponcompletionoftheDoctoralAdvisoryCommitteeform.(SeeAppendixB&Corseeformsat:http://arted.fsu.edu/about/internal-resources/)Themajorprofessorandstudentthenorganizeasupervisorycommitteeconsistingofaminimumof4facultymemberswithgraduatestatus.Onememberwithgraduatestatusfromadifferentdepartmentservesastheoutsidecommitteemember.ThenamesofthesupervisorycommitteewillbereportedtotheDeanofGraduateStudies.Afterthesupervisorycommitteehasbeenappointed,thestudent,inconsultationwiththemajorprofessor,preparesareportofthestudent’sprogramofstudyandwritesaninitialresearchinterestpaper.Theseitems,alongwithacurrentCV,andDoctoralProgramofStudiesformsaresubmittedtoeachcommitteememberabouttwoweekspriortothefirstsupervisorycommitteemeeting.(SeeAppendixB&Corseeformat:http://arted.fsu.edu/about/internal-resources/)Duringthemeeting,theprogramofstudiesisdiscussedandrecommendationsaremadeforchanges.TheDeanofGraduateStudies,theacademicdean,chairofthemajordepartment,andanyfacultymayattendcommitteemeetingsasnon-votingmembers.Afterapproval,eachmembersignstheform,anditissubmittedtotheChairoftheDepartmentforasignature.TheoriginaliskeptintheDepartmentstudentfiles;acopyisforwardedtotheDeanofGraduateStudies.Towardtheendofthefirstcommitteemeeting,themajorprofessordiscussespossiblecomprehensiveexamquestionswithothercommitteemembersandestablishesatentativedatefortheexam.
Selecting Coursework
The Program of Studies Thestudentmaychooseaconcentrationinarteducation,artsadministration,orarttherapy.Withthemajorprofessor,thedoctoralstudentwillplanaprogramofstudiesdesignedtousestrengths,makeupdeficiencies,andprovideknowledgerequiredfortheaccomplishmentoforiginalresearch.Aminimumof30semesterhoursofcourseworkbeyondthemaster'sdegreeandexclusiveofthehoursearnedindissertationcreditisrequired.(SeesectionofDoctoralDegreePrograms,intheUniversityBulletinforimportantdetailedinformationaboutgeneralregulations.)AlldoctoralstudentsintheDepartmentofArtEducationmustincludeintheirprogramsofstudy:

Research Method Requirements. Studentsareofferedseveraloptionsformeetingresearchmethodrequirementsandthestudentandhis/hersupervisorycommitteedecidewhatcoursesbestsuitindividualneeds.Aminimumof12hoursofresearchmethodsisrequiredincluding:ARE5745ResearchSurveyandaqualitativeresearchmethodsclassofchoice.Doctoralstudentsmustalsotakeafour-hourstatisticscourse(EDF5400isrecommended).
Related Coursework. Courseworkshouldbepursuedwithinandoutsidethedepartment,inrelatedareasincludingcurriculum,philosophy,psychology,history,administration,assessment,andothers,asappropriatetotheirprogramsofstudy.Studentsshouldplanthisportionoftheirprogramswiththeircommitteechairandmembers.Studentswithassistantshipsneedtoplanaheadtoavoidtakingmorethanonecourseoutsidethecollegeeachsemester.
Responsibilities Required Upon Completion of Coursework
Comprehensive Examination. Thecomprehensiveexaminationisadministeredatornearthecompletionofcourseworktodeterminewhetherornotastudent:
• Hasmasteredprogramcontentacquiredthroughcourseworkandindividualreading
• Canapplythisknowledgeinacomplex,creative,andorderlymanner
• Usestheoryandresearchtosupportstatements
• Presentsideaseffectivelyinwritingandspeaking*PleaseNote:Comprehensiveexaminationswillnotnormallybegivenduringthesummer.The examination consists of a written and an oral component. Thewritten examination consistsof4questionsandiscompletedduringa30-dayperiod.Thestudentisresponsiblefordistributingtheentireexamtoallcommitteemembersattheendoftheexaminationperiod.Thewrittenexamsarethenreadandevaluated.Next,anoral defense isscheduled.Fortheoralexam,thestudentwillbequestionedonaspectsofthewrittenexamthatwarrantfurtherexplanation.Inaddition,thestudentwillbeexaminedonhis/herabilitytocommunicatepertinentinformationinaneffectivemanner.AnextramembermaybeappointedtotheexaminingcommitteeatthediscretionoftheAcademicDean,DeanofGraduateStudies,oronrecommendationofthemajorprofessor.TheDepartmentChair,theacademicdean,theDeanofGraduateStudies,orotherfacultymayattendtheoralexamasnon---votingmembers.Aftertheexamination,theexaminingcommittee(majorprofessor)submitsareportregardingtheoutcometotheacademicdean:Pass,fail---additionalworktobecompleted,ortobere---examined.Inaddition,aformrecordingtheresultsisplacedinthestudent'sdepartmentalfile.ExaminationresultsarealsoreportedtotheOfficeoftheRegistrarforthestudent'spermanentrecordandalsocertifiedtotheGraduateDeanonanAdmissiontoCandidacyform.SatisfactorycompletionofaComprehensiveExaminationisarequirementforadmissiontocandidacy.NostudentmayregisterfordissertationhourspriortothepointinthesemesterinwhichtheComprehensiveExaminationwaspassed.Oncetheexaminationispassed,pleasecommunicatethistothedepartment’sStaffServicesAssociateoranydepartmentalrepresentative,andAdmissiontoCandidacyformwillbecompletedandsignedbythechair.ThisformwillthenbesenttotheAcademicDeantobefiledintheOfficeoftheRegistrarpriortoregistrationfordissertationhours.Itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytomakesurethisiscompleted.
AftercompletionoftheAdmissiontoCandidacyprocess,thestudentmayretroactivelyadddissertationhoursforthatsemesterinwhichtheComprehensiveExaminationwascompleted,providedthestudenthasbeenadmittedtocandidacypriortothemid-pointofthesemester.Inordertodothis,thestudentregistersforDIShoursatthebeginningofthesemester.Aftertakingthecomprehensiveexaminationandaftertheadmissiontocandidacyformhasbeenfiled,themajorprofessorcontactstheRegistrar'sOfficetoconverttheDIShourstodissertationhours.Althoughthestudentmustbeadmittedtocandidacyatleast6monthspriortothegrantingofthedegree,normallythestudentshouldexpecttospendayearormoreofworkonthedissertation.
The Dissertation Process
Prospectus Afterpassingthecomprehensiveexamination,thedoctoralcandidatebeginsthedissertationphaseofdoctoralstudy.Thedoctoralcandidatepreparesaprospectusunderthedirectionofthemajorprofessorandsubmitsittothesupervisorycommittee.Thecommitteemeetstoreviewtheprospectusandquestionthestudent.Uponapprovalbythesupervisorycommittee,theprospectusissubmittedtotheDepartmentChairforreviewandsignature.
The Dissertation ItisarequirementthatthedissertationforthePh.D.representsoriginalresearchandbeasignificantcontributiontotheliteratureofthefieldaswellasascholarlyendeavor.ThedissertationfortheEd.D.isapractice-baseddissertationforprofessionalswho typicallyexpecttoworkinschoolsettings.Themajorprofessor,inconsultationwiththecommittee,prescribestheformandstyleofthedissertation.Universityrequirementsareexplainedinthe‘GuidelinesandRequirementsforThesisWriters’thatareavailablefromtheGraduateResearchOffice,408Westcott.Thecandidatemustregisterforaminimumof24semesterhoursofdissertationcredit(DissertationARE6980)andberegisteredcontinuouslyforatleast2hoursofcrediteachsemester(requiredbyUniversity)afterpassingthecomprehensiveexamination,includingthesemesterinwhichthedissertationisdefended.Thestudentisexpectedtoworkcloselywithhisorhermajorprofessorthroughoutthedissertationprocess.FinalapprovalofthedissertationbytheentiresupervisorycommitteeandDepartmentChairisprerequisitetotheawardingofthedegree.
Examination in Defense of the Dissertation Thedefenseofthedissertationisanoralexaminationinwhichthecandidatepresentsthecompletedstudyandrespondstoquestionsfromthesupervisorycommitteeandothermembersofthegraduatefaculty.Academiccourtesyrequiresthatapreliminarydraftofthedissertationincludingtheabstractbesubmittedtoeachmemberofthesupervisorycommitteeatleast4weeksbeforethedateoftheoralexamination.Atleast2weekspriortothedateoftheexamination,themajorprofessorwillpresentanannouncementofthedateanddatatotheOfficeofGraduateStudiesandResearch.Itisrecommendedthatstudentsdefendnolaterthanthe8thweekofclassesinthesemesterofintenttograduate.StudentsmustdefendbynolaterthantheInitialFormatSubmissionandDefenseDeadlineinthesemestertheyintendtograduate.
