ART & DESIGN - Y8 – FOOD ILLUSTRATION
This week we will be taking
inspiration from Japanese artist
and chef Itsuo Kobayashi. He
has been recording all of the
dishes of food he has served and
eaten over the last 32 years!

Task 1 (10mins) – choose
or create a photo to work
with today You can select one of the 3
images I’ve put in the
following 3 pages (different
difficulty levels)
Or you can find your own
flat-lay (looking down from
above) photo from online
Or you can take a flat-lay
photo of your own to work
from
Choose an image or take
your own photo……
Think about
which image you
can manage to
draw as well as
which one you
like best!

Task 2 (1 hour) – Draw your
plate of food out in pencil.
When drawing out in pencil
these are hints and tips….
Sketch whole shapes lightly at
first then start adding smaller
details and textures
You don’t need to fill the whole
sheet of A4 but work quite big
If there are any details around
the plate then draw them in
too for some background
interest
Pencil Sketch……
I’ve taken my own photo to
work from for this task (my
vegan dinner balanced on
a patterned cushion!) and
will now be drawing it out
in pencil

Task 3 (30mins) – Now go
over your oulines in
black pen nice and
clearly
Use a black biro or
fineliner or even a felt tip
pen or sharpie
Go over your lines first
neatly then rub out your
pencil lines
Be bold with your lines
and use different pen
marks to create some
different textures
Add Pen Outlines……

Task 4 (1hour) - Once you have
completed your outlines in pen
it’s time to add some colour as
follows:
Use whatever you have to hand
…some colouring pencils or
different colour pens or crayons
Add some areas of BLOCK
colour and some areas of
GRADUATED colour
Make it BRIGHT and
COLOURFUL!
Work in quite a MESSY and
SCRIBBLY way to make it
EXPRESSIVE
Adding colour……
Don’t worry about
working too carefully
in colour – make it
expressive!

Task 5 (10mins)
OPTIONAL
If you have time then consider
other ways you could add to
your drawing as follows:
Adding some PATTERN into
the background
Adding some TEXT or a TITLE
around the plate
Collaging some PACKAGING
or RECEPTS into the
background
Adding lines to make it look like
lined paper
Adding HANDRWITTEN notes
around the plate about the food
Extension Task ……
I added the names of all the
food on my plate and some
more colour too

together as we would very much like to see
it all when we get back
We will be doing lots more drawing tasks in
the next few weeks – so keep all of your
drawings together and later this term we will
be showing you how ideas for making them
into a sketchbook
