M ore than ever before, art representing the nude is

showing up in galleries and museum exhibitions, but

there is still a ways to go before garnering a broad

cultural acceptance of the nude as a legitimate subject for public

consumption.

No-one knows this better than Ilene Skeen, founder of

Barebrush.com, a website dedicated to showcase those artists

whose practice focuses on the nude figure. Although founded in

2006, Ilene’s interest in drawing from the model dates back several

decades; hers is a story come full circle. After completing a

disappointing stint at art school in the 60’s, New Yorker Ilene

Skeen’s path led her into a world of business and computers far

removed from the art scene. Nonetheless, over the years Skeen

continued drawing from the model, producing thousands of

watercolor sketches of the nude and successfully selling them

online in the days before eBay or etsy.

After leaving the business world behind, Skeen’s interest in art

veered her towards the anthropology of art, where she completed

a Master’s thesis on how gallery owners reconcile commercial

success while keeping true to their artistic aesthetic. Following this

endeavor and facing retirement, Skeen’s decision to open her

website up to other artists seemed like a natural development.

Armed with a spontaneous logo sketched out on a napkin and a

year's worth of advertising in the New york Gallery Guide,

Barebrush.com was launched.

LM: What inspires you to draw and paint the nude figure?

IS: I really don’t believe in the saying: “Beauty is only skin deep”.Quite the opposite – skin deep beauty is actually irrelevant. I aminterested in getting into the soul and letting the spirit come through. In my mind, a successful painting or sketch conveys dignity, graceand poise. I enjoy making ordinary people look beautiful! I think aboutmy work as celebrating the uniqueness of people. Every model istotally unique; I can look back at a drawing of a quick one-minute

pose and immediately identify the model – the stance, the figurecouldn’t be anyone else but that model.

LM: What is it you hope to provide artists on Barebrush.com?

IS: Validation, exposure and opportunity. Artists get their ownpage on Barebrush where they can upload new images andupdate their profile. Artwork for the monthly calendars areselected from the artists’ pages by independent curators, givingthe Barebrush artists a great way to be seen and critiqued by artprofessionals. The concept of the calendars also gives the art a

temporal context; when collectors come to the site, they continuallysee fresh work. I’m also very excited about the launch of e-commerceon the Artists’ Market. Artists whose work is repeatedly selected byinvited curators can now sell their work through Barebrush, andcollectors can feel confident that they are purchasing consistentlyhigh-standard, quality work.

LM: What’s next for Barebrush.com?

IS: I can’t give the details away yet, but it’s related to my theory of theFour Classes of Art Buyers, gleaned from years of experience.

LM: Can you explain your theory? Sounds intriguing!

IS: In a nutshell, at the top of the hierarchy are the Collectors. Thesebuyers are dedicated to a particular artist and are committed topurchasing that artist’s creative output. Below the Collectors are theArt Decorators – the ones who buy art that go over the couch. Thenext rung down is what I call the Art Tourist. Art Tourists don’t buyart but they go to see art and want to take away a souvenir of theirart experience, like a catalogue or a postcard. At the bottom of theheap are the Voyeurs. I call them Art Voyeurs because they don’tmake any effort to come out and see art. But just like real voyeurs, they do enjoy looking. I can build on that. Wouldn’t it be a wonderfulthing to transform Art Voyeurs into Art Tourists, transform ArtTourists into Art Decorators, and ultimately transform Art Decoratorsinto Collectors….?

Today, Barebrush.com has expanded to include other genres besides

the nude to show the depth and breadth of its artists. Barebrush has

built up a loyal collector base and a robust membership; the site

gets a few thousand hits a day and counting. Included at the bottom

of Barebrush’s Home Page are the following words: “Online since

2006. Proving it's OKAY to enjoy the art of the nude.” We couldn’t

agree more.

Olivia BoaOlivia Boa was born in 1981 in Yvelines in France. At a young age Boawas attracted to the world of the art and in particular, painting.

Boa began her formation into an artist at the age of 10 with thehelp of Yves Armani, an artist who taught her the basiscs. From theage of her 14, Boa pursued her work and her research in paintingin a self-taught way.

In 1998, Boa decided to release hersefl from conventional structuresof the academic painting, by turning on the abstract art.

In 2011, she worked the concept of "generations" in art, namely topaint a subject on various energy perceptions. For example of alandscape, Olivia Boa is going to draw all the energy yin and totransmit it on a work, while realizing simultaneously another workof the same landscape but in an energy yang, so forming a linen

couple representing the same landscape and being entitled: thefirst generation.

In addition to her work as an artist, Olivia is also a therapist andin 2012 she proposed a subtle mixture of her work in therapymixed with her work in abstract art.

Olivia Boa declines us a whole pallet of feelings, sensations, observations and makes in consultation and retranscribes it in theform of colors, of movement, of textures and of forms on a painting.

A French/English bilingual catalog of its work:« psychological works » will be available from the end of thissummer. For any order please get in touch directly with theartist who will dedicate it to you personally.

Debbi ChanOn the cusp of two creative signs, the tiger and the rabbit, I wasborn in Houston, Texas. With a creative push from day one, Itook up the brush by age ten. In my early years as a buddingartist I decided that oil painting was not my thing butwatercolor and ink were. That really never changed but thestyle vacillated from realism to fantasy throughout thoseformative years. It was not until a bit of aging wisdom came tome that I sought out a teacher and found Frank Chiu, a masterartist in traditional Chinese painting. He mentored me for overa decade and was later joined by his wife, Judy.

They showed me that just taking Sumi lessons was not enough.I involved myself in Chinese culture, philosophy, and art until itcoursed through my veins and I saw the world throughdifferent eyes. My teacher gave me an artist name – Sosum.

He said I always do what I say I will do and SOSUM was the Hechose. What He did not know is that the main reason I got in totraditional Chinese art was to paint on silk. Sosum also means,

through the root character, threads of silk. I learned muchfrom this wise teacher. then I took an invitation to visit Idahofor a three weeks vacation.

Four days before my departure for home, I decided to live hereand when I went back home it was only to pack my apartmentand say two goodbyes: one to the Buddhist Temple where I wasan ordained nun; the other, to the Chiu's, my mentors andteachers who had become family. Frank Chiu threw the IChingwithout my knowledge and four days later in my new home hetold me what the sticks had said..... GO TO THE WESTERNMOUNTAINS...so now a decade has passed. I own a farm on tenacres of paradise, and my heart and art are reaching heightsnot reached by many... I can truly say that I am rich – rich withno money. And art is still as exciting as it was when I picked upthat paintbrush fifty years ago.

Gabi DomenigPictures of man fascinate me since I can remember. I am mainly inspired by light, shadows, colors, emotions and human forms. The eyes are playing a special role in my paintings. I try to capture moments (not only) with the brush, try to breathe soul intothem and I want to build up emotional tensions. I want to convey mood and emotion with my paintings, want to bringsomething in motion. My great wish is that a spark jumps over to the viewer and touches him in his heart and in his soul.

Edvard GhazaryanMy painting style is original; I paint free and do not hung up witha definite painting style, but have been impressed by the stylesand techniques of European painters of all eras: those are 19thcentury several French painters that did paint under open sky, reviving gorgeous color gamma - giving absolutely naturalimpression of the air and sun light … 1890`s post impressionists(Paul Gauguin, Van Gogh…), abstract painters Wassily Kandinsky,Kazimir Malevich in the end of 19th century and beginning of20th. I have created this painting style and technique by revisingrealistic fine art and international art - from Egypt to 21st century.

Marina IzrailevichThe roots of my life and work are steeped in Russian art andculture. My earlier works had a whiff of Russian Constructivism(purely unconsciously; I was thrilled when it was pointed out tome). I am still searching for a way to express the breadth offeelings and emotions and the struggle for meaning and life’sanchor. My major influences are Mark Rothko, WassilyKandinsky and Marc Chagall. My heart leaps when I see theirwork and I think ‘how do I do THAT’.

My work is color, texture, and flow. Movement of pencil onpaper, brush on canvas, and lines and shapes on a surface, anysurface. The excitement of watching hot metal bending underacetylene torch and the flow of melting metal as two pieces are

joined together and a sculpture emerges. It's about theimpossible, the discovery of a potential, and the excitement ofseeing a completed work. And I continue the search.

I like to work with almost all media: oil on canvas; watercolor, chalk, charcoal, and pastel on paper; occasional painting ordrawing in acrylic; welded steel sculpture. I earned myBachelor of Fine Arts at LIU in New York. I have had severalshows in galleries in Manhattan and Long Island, and one ofmy shows was featured in the New York Times. I currently liveand work in Santa Cruz, California.

Jack Jasperstudied at the School of the Art Institute ofChicago. He received a BFA in painting in 1970and an MFA in 1975. He concentrated onpainting in graduate school, but he also studiedperformance. His work in the time arts led himto explore the use of the body in conjunctionwith other media such as sound and film.

After receiving his MFA, he moved to Helena,Montana to pursue freelance design workwith his brother. He eventually joined thestaff of the Printers, Inc., as a designer. Hecontinued painting and exhibited locally andregionally. In 1982 he received a grant fromthe Helena Film Society Grant to ArtistsProgram. He collaborated with Montanapoet, Rick Newby to design and produce thebook, The Man in the Green Loden Overcoat,a juxtaposition of words and images.

While he was in Montana, he completed three years of coursework in Medical Technology, pursuing a combined degree inchemistry and biology at Carroll College in Helena. He maintainedhis interest in the time arts by studying percussion.

After twelve years in Montana, he decided to return to a moreurban environment. In 1988 he moved back to Chicago tofurther his joint careers in graphic design and painting.

He worked as a book designer at a small Chicago press for fouryears, working extensively with the Macintosh. After completionof a kindergarten through eighth grade series of books for thepress, he pursued freelance graphic design work. At one point heworked for a company creating medical illustrations for doctors, nurses and hospitals. Currently, he is freelancing. He continues to

paint and periodically pursued courses in electronic design andimaging at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

He is represented by Amsterdam Whitney Gallery in New Yorkcity and shows his work in group shows. His work has been soldto various collectors.

From the experience of being surrounded by the powerfulpresence of nature in Montana, coupled with the study of lifesciences and the Australian aborigines, he is drawn toexperimenting with combinations of elements, sometimesalluding to air, earth, fire and water. He strives to representnature’s electron dance that presupposes an ambientunderlying sexuality, unfolding as a shimmering becoming, asynchronicity between disparate elements.

Darlene KaplanDarlene Kaplan is an award-winning artist who has beencaptivating art lovers worldwide with her energetic OrientalBrush Paintings using Chinese watercolors for more than 40years. Her many awards include First place at the CampagnaCenter, Alexandria, VA, First place at Green Spring Gardens,Annandale, VA, and Finalist at the 27th Annual ArtsCompetitions-Artist Magazine.

She grew up in the country in Tennessee and states, "All of myspare time was spent walking in the woods searching out bugs, plants and anything else that was alive. Those childhood daysspent with nature is brought alive every time I put a brushstroke down on paper. All of my paintings are derived fromnature." Darlene paints in the Lingnan style of Oriental BrushPainting which is a combination of Western and East Asian art.She has been studying with Henry Wo Yue-Kee from 1994 tillpresent. Mr. Wo paints and teaches this freestyle of ink andcolor on rice paper that originated in China centuries ago. "Formany years I painted realism in oils before making the changeto oriental brush painting. Studying martial arts/Tai Chi’ foryears inspired me to try this medium, which I fell in love with

right away. The calming effect of grinding the ink beforepainting, the energy that is put into throwing ink on paper isjust the greatest of pleasures that only this style of art allowsme to feel." In her paintings Darlene attempts “to show purityin painting the snow, brightness in the moon, fragrance in theflower, sounds in the waterfall and spirit in people.” Beforebeginning, she has a vision in mind. "The mind has the planand the hand follows. Once started, the brush and ink requirefull attention. Without the mood, brush and ink do not haveanything to attach to; without brush and ink, the mood cannotbe expressed. These are inseparable elements.” The artist hashad many solo and group exhibitions throughout the UnitedStates including an exhibition of over 100 paintingsrepresenting Oriental Brush Painting during the CherryBlossom Festival 2012 in Washington, DC. Her work has beenexhibited in many galleries and museums including CharlesSumner School Museum in Washington, DC, SoHo District in NYCity, and many, many more locations. Brandy KraftI am an artist from south Florida. Igrew up with a strong fondness andyearning towards the arts but as achild, always doodling on my classpapers and notebooks, but neverthought it could be a seriousprofession. I was wrong. It’s been yearssince I was that misinformed little girland now there is no turning back.

My artwork is an exploration. I have chosen the phenomena oflight to interact with most recently and its constant variationpresents innumerable challenges. I attended community collegeright after high school and moved to Chicago shortly after that topursue an art degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After a year there, I took a leave of absence and went to Californiaupon hearing that a favorite painter of mine needed an intern.Half a year there and then back to Chicago, but not for long. Soon Ihad met my husband and he uprooted me again. Sweden is a longway away, but nowhere is too far when you are in love. Whileabroad I studied at the Swedish Academy for Realist Art, where I

examined techniques of the old masters and spent my daysdrawing from life.

The painting I submitted for consideration by Art & Beyond is aportrayal of where love can take you. In the multi-media image Ireference my own life through light and shadow. The prominentyellow and blue are the national colors of Sweden.

Today you can find me happily back in Chicago (with my husband)continuing my pursuit of education (back at SAIC) and in thestudio, painting away as usual.

Paula LaflammeBorn in Montreal in 1964, Paula Laflamme is a self taught artistand began painting in 1992.

Paula spent her childhood between land and sea, the slums ofMontreal, and the richness of her ancestors, from Gaspé. Herpaintings are her own compositions, they are her work.

Using her emotions and the expressions of the people shemeets, she lives in interesting situations and moves deep intoher characters and those who contemplate.

The everyday life, the mood of our society, the character andactions of the "Almighty" and others, those who make theirlittle daily routine living their lives without anyone`s notice, area valuable sources of inspiration for Paula.

Paula allows herself to be carried away by her foolishness, shelets it be sweet, bitter or violent. She lets her brushes guide heruntil the darkness reaches the light.

Patricia TuglusPatricia Tuglus has been taking classes and workshops formany years and in many mediums. She has earned acertificate in botanical art illustration from the MortonArboretum. Patricia has been a student of well-known oilpastel artist, George Shipperly.

Patricia’s painting style is intuitive. Rarely does she do apreliminary sketch and when she does, it consists of only a fewlines or blocks of color. She finds that conscious planningforms a roadblock. When painting a landscape Patricia allowsthe spirit of nature to soak into her being, where it waits todirect its essence thru the paint and onto the paper. It creates

it's own existence with colors flowing and melding into anagreement of the finished painting.

Her intuitive paintings have been in the LaGrange Art Leaguefor a number of years. More recently, Patricia exhibited withThe Yellow House Artists, Addison Art Guild, Downers GroveArtist’s Guild and Oak Brook Art league and has received manyawards.

Online exhibits include Yellow House Artists(yellowhouseartists.com) and SLMM (slmm.org).

Sandy Den HartogSandy has had an interest in stones since childhood. Wherever shewent, even as a young person, whether it was picnics, vacations, orfield trips; she always made sure she had a cup along to collectrocks which were precious to her at the time. Once in high schoolshe took numerous classes in gemology and geology. Then shegraduated, got married, and had children. Rocks and gems had tobe put on hold for a while.

However, she was still able to attend gem shows and art showswhen she had the opportunity. She was looking and learning andeventually was able to travel the globe and reignite her interest ingems and minerals. She was struck by how much stones, rocks, gems, and minerals change from country to country. In bringing

back Ethiopian Crosses from Africa, she made her daughters andgranddaughters necklaces with the crosses.

She was once again hooked with a creative passion for whatshe could now do with these artifacts.

Sandy’s work has been exhibited at Palace Hotel in San Franciscoand the James Ratliff Gallery in Sedona, Arizona. She has alsobeen a part of several juried shows winning a first place medal in2010 and 2012 with a Award of Merit in 2012.

Melvin HarrisI became interested in art at an early age. I remember looking atthe ‘Draw Me’ ads in comic books and various other publications.I started by taking one of their correspondence courses. I took artclasses in Junior High School and was a frequent visitor to theMuseum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art inNew York City after school hours. I intensively studied WaterColor and Acrylic painting, Life Drawing, Graphic Art and Design,Technical Illustration and Airbrush Photo Retouching duringseveral decades that I lived in California. I gave no thought to‘being in the arts’ when I was young. I find creating art to be anoutlet for my thoughts and experiences.

In my work one may perceive a facet of my dream life, catch aglimpse of a thought, experience or wish that I have hadduring my life. I intend for every image to be not only thoughtprovoking but also appealing to the eye. Because I spent manyyears as a graphic artist and illustrator, I started using acomputer to complete some of my work. After a time, I beganusing the computer exclusively for all of my art creations.

My preferred medium of expression is digital landscape andmodeling software. I use these programs to create one-of-a-kind images from photo-realistic landscapes to ‘other-worldly’abstracts. Fantasy may be a term that describes one of severalthemes I depict. Sometimes it is a word concept and othertimes I may follow a more esoteric route. Surreal landscapesand scenes are ‘products’ of my dream-life.

Artists are the ‘visual journalists’ of their time. Through theirwork they tell the story of the world in which we find ourselves. As an artist, I feel it is important to express, through art, mystory of the world’s impact on me.

All my prints are on Somerset Velvet paper using Epson Archivalinks. The prints Robins Nest, Gift Wrapped and Stained Glasswill be on display at the Raw Art Space NYC March 1 - 15.

Arthur JacobRecognition of my work has greatly expanded withparticipation in several solos and many juried and groupexhibitions. Among them is my most recent solo exhibitionat the Bergamot Station Arts Center, Santa Monica, Californiaand hosted by Gallery ArtLA. I have also been the recipient ofseveral awards and have been featured in or as part ofseveral print media articles, among them Professional Artistand Art & Beyond Magazine, that are both national print andelectronic magazines. I have also recently been juried in tothe winning on-line gallery hosted by Manhattan ArtsInternational, New York, New York.My work is a process of discovery, strongly influenced by avery strong visual sense of the world. My work offers aninfinite variety of visual perceptions and interpretations forthe viewer. The viewer is first told what the “real Life” imageis in the title of the piece, but through abstraction andreconstruction of that image, they are then asked toundertake an adventure of discovery and challenged toexplore the shapes, colors, movements and forms, which the

abstraction and reconstruction present. Colors and shapesbecome emotion, while form and movement becomeattitude. Even when a work is easily recognized there is still apredominate thread of color, movement, shape and form.My creative process is a thoughtful and purposeful digitalmanipulation. Using a mouse rather than a brush to achievea powerful medium of expression and communication, creates this style of fine art.

After leaving the work-a-day world, it was in Las Vegas that Ibegan to discover my creative abilities and focus on themediums of photography and digital art. In 2008 I decidedto move to the Portland area where I presently reside, after ashort stay in Coos Bay, Oregon. Believing that it is importantto stay connected with one’s community, I have activelyserved on several community boards and committees, mostrecently, the Contemporary Arts Collective in Las Vegas andthe Coos Bay Art Museum in Oregon.

Keith ParksBorn in Los Angeles, Keith Parks grew up in thelovely town of Oxnard, California, where his fatherconverted an old shed in their backyard into adarkroom to "keep him off the streets" while hewas in high school. Keith began college atCalifornia State University, Northridge as aphotography major, but as graduationapproached and he realized there were no "HelpWanted: Photographer" ads in the classifiedsection, but plenty of entry-level graphics jobs, heswitched his emphasis to graphic art in his finalyear. In 1980 he got his BA in Art.

That led to a 30+ year career in graphic design. In2008, with his daughter about to depart forcollege, and his midlife artistic crisis in fullbloom, he felt the time was right to take a stab atsome purely personal artwork. He devoted acouple of years to building up a body of work, and posted the resulting images to an onlineartist's community, eliciting positive reviews andvaluable feedback. By 2010, with his hard drivefilling up with image files, he took the advice ofone of his old art professors to "enter every showyou can", which lead to pieces being acceptedinto a variety of juried exhibitions around thecountry (thanks to the internet). Now, in his mid-fifties, he's looking for his "big break".
