Arroyo Seco Junior High School “We lead, others follow” Seco Gram _______________________________________________________________________ From the Principal: Welcome to a new school year at Arroyo Seco! We opened our doors on August 11 th to 1260 students – all receiving their schedules from counselors and parent volunteers. By 7:45 am all students were in class. Our teachers, counselors, support staff and custodians worked very hard during the days prior to ensure a smooth opening day for Seco students. Challenging and engaging learning experiences were immediately evident as students met their team, elective and physical education teachers. Every student received an orientation by either Mr. Cliff Miller or Dr. Catherine Nicholas, Assistant Principals, within the first two days of school. Our counselors Ms. Sue Dielentheis, Mrs. Jo Ann Ward and Mr. Jesse Marshall have been meeting with team teachers to ensure all students get the support they need to be successful. Before school started, Seco teachers spent two days participating in professional staff development. We continue to make writing across the curriculum a priority. Our staff has spent many hours thinking and working together to develop our school-wide goals for academic achievement. Many teachers attended professional development training over the summer at the District’s Summer Institute. All teachers participated in training of the Common Core standards, Differentiation and Instructional Technology during the days before students arrived. Many of our staff members have been trained in the “Capturing Kid’s Heart’s” model. The overarching theme of this training is “If you have a kid’s heart, you will have their mind”. A Culture of Caring is evident on our campus. As I walk around our school, I see teachers greeting students at the door, shaking hands, and calling students by name. I see campus supervisors and support staff helping students with a multitude of needs. I see smiling students enjoying their junior high school experience. I hope you will feel the warm and wonderful vibe when you visit our Back To School Night, next Thursday evening, September 1 st , beginning at 6 PM. Come hear the Advanced Band perform in the quad prior to classroom visitations. Plan on attending our Parent Advisory Council meetings. Our PAC Board has planned several informative and relevant speakers. Our first meeting will be on September 19 th at 12 noon. Our special guests will be Hart District teacher specialists Mr. Ron Ippolito and Mr. Von Hougo and Deputy Kevin Duxbury presenting the dangers and complexities of Social Media as it impacts our teens. Please consider supporting our new, exciting and different Fundraiser this year call Seco Games. All students will be involved in one full day of fun and competition for our teams. We’ll be scrapping the idea of students selling products and trying a straight direct donation drive. You’ll be hearing many more details in the upcoming weeks. I want to thank all parents for your support and encouragement. I especially appreciate all of our parent volunteers who frequently come and help us out. Together we can make a difference in the lives of the young people who add value to our homes, our school, our community, and the world. Dear Parents and Guests, The staff at Arroyo Seco Jr. High School joins me in extending a warm and sincere welcome to Back-to-School Night to all our parents and guests. You will have an opportunity to meet teachers, learn about our Blue Ribbon school, class requirements, goals and objectives, and get an overall picture of the educational program of which your youngster is a part. Arroyo Seco's principal, Rhondi Durand, will provide a brief general welcome at 6:10 p.m. Beginning at 6:15 p.m., parents will be able to follow their student's class schedule, consisting of six ten-minute periods beginning with the "A" period class. Some teams may have a special schedule or meeting place. Please check with your son or daughter about the locations noted on this flyer in the space provided for his or her schedule. Due to the organization of the evening's events, there is not enough time for teachers to meet personally with parents to discuss individual progress. You may, however, request a teacher or team conference on the sheets provided in each classroom. Also, please make arrangements for the care of your children as this event is for the parents.
Sincerely, Mrs. Rhondi Durand Mr. Cliff Miller Dr. Catherine Nicholas

Parent Advisory Council
2016/2017 Membership
The Parent Advisory Council (PAC) is the school-wide parent booster organization that
serves the entire community of students, parents and staff of Arroyo Seco Junior High
School. Our goals are to increase communication, support the learning environment,
helping with basic needs of our disadvantaged students, and provide an opportunity for
all parents to participate in the ASJHS community.
Membership dues are payable at the time of registration or at any meeting. You are your
PAC’s only source of revenue which supports the following programs:
Eighth Grade PAC Scholarship Awards
Scholarships up to $500 are awarded through an application and scoring process.
Student Incentive Programs
Fundraising and Donation Campaigns
For our families in need and the SCV Food Pantry before Thanksgiving.
PAC Luncheons
Features guest speakers discussing topics that impact you and your child, at school and in
the community.
School and Student Appreciation Programs
Eyes and Ears
This is a program developed to bring parents on campus during nutrition and lunch.
Parents walk the campus during these breaks and simply observe, reporting any unusual
behavior to campus supervisors. Since implementing this program students have
mentioned they feel safer. Simply having more visible adults, acts as a deterrent to
inappropriate behavior. For the parents it can be quite an eye-opening experience,
campus life has changed quite a bit since we were that age.
Every parent is a member of PAC, but we rely on your membership donations, we
suggest a $10.00 donation per family. This year, we already have approximately
$4,000.00 to support the programs listed here. If you didn’t get the chance to donate at
registration, and you are interested in doing so, you can place your donation in an
envelope, label it “PAC” and turn it in to Kathie Loughlin, our ASB secretary.
