ELECTIONS ARE UPON US I n my previous message to Alex residents, carried in the February edition of your favourite local newspaper, I called upon Alex residents to prepare for the upcoming elections on the 7th of May 2014. Most importantly, I reiterated our national govern- ment’s message of responsible electioneering so as to ensure that our nation conducts “free and fair” elections. South Africa is a beacon of hope for most democrat- ic states, we have since the dawn of democracy con- ducted elections that our nation can jointly take pride in. As citizens of a proud democratic dispensation, it is our responsibility to ensure that we continue in that spirit. We must continue to work towards peace in our beloved country. Elections give us a chance to test our democratic structure to decide on the way-forward. They afford us an opportunity to ensurethat whoever is elect- ed into power, has the legitimacy and right to govern our country for the next five years. We must continue to ensure that the aspirations of our people are gathered jealousy through the ballot. Our late former president, Dr Nelson Mandela’s dreamof a free society in which all her citizens enjoy the fruits of our struggle are now left in our hands. It is our duty to ensure that we do not betray his legacy and the personal sacrifices he and his peers made on our behalf. In the famous words of the late former presi- dent, he once said “I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all per- sons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die”. In closing, I wish you all a great voting day on 07 May 2014. Happy voting Alex residents, it is indeed in our hands.
