Lucky I was prepared. Tip 1: Many times I have mentioned to allow spare time at the start of your trip before any meetings or activities. Try a day if possible. It really counts to get you over the stress of leaving for a trip, plus helps in extreme circumstances. Like the situation where an engine splutters and the plane turns around, so after 9 hours flying, you end up back in Sydney! Tip 2: Join a Club like Qantas Club or Club Europe that gives you access to the club lounges at the Airports. They have reasonable snack food, showers and most times helpful staff. The problem with an A380 getting delayed is that you are with 500 other people who have the same problem! Tip 3: Be sure your carry-on bag is equipped for up to a day of delay. For example, unshaven men may not all look like movie stars and may not be your favourite feeling. A small battery shaver can be an advantage over the light crunchie blades you get from the airlines. This time I missed two connections from Dubai to Frankfurt and with 10 hours to wait, was driven to a Hotel. The lovely lady at reception said I would be sharing with a Mr Mark! Not likely... ROADTEST:
New Orla Digital Grand Piano To be honest, I wasn’t aware there was a gap in the
digital piano market. But this week I’ve discovered
that the Orla range fill a void perfectly for home
players who want a full European sound and plenty
of features in a reasonably priced package.
Orla is our new line of digital pianos, designed in
Italy and made with style and performance in mind.
At first touch, the Orla 450 digital grand piano
comes to life with some serious volume and quite a
heavy bass that would fill a large room. The sound
is warm, resonant and spreads well with the
speaker positioning.
The Orla 450 would be ideal for the intermediate
and hobby player, with its expressive touch that is
light and even under your fingers.
Taking time to glance over the array of buttons, it’s
clear that this instrument is designed for interactive
and accompanied playing. The built-in rhythms are
easy to access and the recording and play back
features are a cinch. It really does sound best too
when you play along with the rhythm
accompaniments, which are full and flourished.
If you’ve always wanted a glamorous grand piano in
your lounge that plays itself, then this Orla might be
for you too. Simply load all your favourite songs
onto a USB stick, pop them into the digital piano
and enjoy the show.
The Orla 450 is now available here at Bernies in
polished black or polished white, priced at $5899.
Never Before!
Bob and Steve Sedergreen On May 12 we were treated to an event that was
more than sensational. For a number of years
Steve Sedergreen has presented his jazz piano
tuition method at our Piano Educators days and
teacher seminars. In January I asked how his
famous Dad was going and wondered if they had
ever played on stage together. “Never before”
said Steve… so I invited them to be part of Live at
Bernies. These guys are legends of the
Melbourne jazz piano scene so it was a rare
event.
Bob was thrilled and explained to audiences how
there are limited opportunities to play together as
pianists. He loved the Schimmel K280 grand and
Steve loved the Hailun CF218 grand... so much
so that we asked if they would like to swap
instruments at interval and the answer was “no”!
Hopefully the Sedergreens will allow us to make
available the recording of the night, which was an
incredible mix of jazz standards and original
tunes. Bernie C
South Eastern Arts Festival
Straight after Easter, the South Eastern Arts
Festival took off with a bang! This huge event saw
over 500 students compete in various instruments
as well as a huge piano section with over 150
performances.
Bernies was proud to be the Major Sponsor and
supply one Schimmel Konzert grand piano and
one Bernstein classic grand piano to support the
events. The pianos sounded sensational and the
feedback from the students was exciting.
I was pleased to be the MC for part of the activities
and also to present an “Inside the Piano” mini
discovery session for the students who were
thrilled to see inside the grand piano action.
Bernies is proud to support the pianists of the
future and have such a big involvement in the
Eisteddfods around Victoria. Congratulations to
the incredible young musicians! Lester C
BERNSTEIN® Masterclass and Piano Competition 2016
A rewarding learning experience For over 30 years, the national Bernstein Piano
Competition has provided a unique learning and reward
experience for young piano students.
Each Masterclass session offers the students an
intimate opportunity to perform and receive an insightful
lesson from a renowned teacher, including members of
the Team of Pianists.
With prizes totaling over $1200, the Bernstein Piano
Competition provides an encouraging competition for
students to compete with national peers. Entry is by
invitation following masterclass participation.
LiVE III Arrival After months of waiting our first LiVE III has arrived. I was very excited and hassled Mick and Linsday in the warehouse until it was eventually fork lifted inside and unpacked.
Come along on the 24th of May and hear
Rhys Arvidson play some signature pieces which will demonstrate the tonal colours of each of the organs we have installed in the LiVE III. There will be open console time for you to try the LiVE as well. Headphones can be provided!
Cavaille-Coll, Schintger, Silbermann, Willis, Batz and Maarschalkerweerd are all at your fingertips… come and experience this incredible new phenomenon in music making! Craig D
Johannus Happenings Recent congratulations go to our long term friends
at Nunawading Seventh Day Adventist Church for
their recent choice of the magnificent Ecclesia T370
three-manual organ for their new building in Central
Avenue. After a mammoth effort, the new building is
nearly complete so keep your eyes open for organ
events and recitals on this wonderful organ.
A special welcome to our new friends, Fr. Elias and
Mr. Patrick Kennedy from Corpus Christi Catholic
Church in Tynong, who have ordered the lovely
Ecclesia T170 for their congregation. I recently
completed a site visit and found the building has
one of the best acoustics I have ever encountered.
We are all looking forward to hearing the completed
installation.
In April we had a visit from Ms Penny Pan, Asia
Pacific Sales Manager from Johannus. It was great
to welcome Penny on her first visit to Australia and
it was a very full schedule, visiting clients in
Melbourne, Adelaide, Cooranbong and Sydney.
Penny was suitably impressed with how hard we
work to look after our Johannus customers in
Australia and continue to grow the brand nationally.
There’s a picture of Penny on the front cover with all
the Bernies team (including the third generation with
Michelle’s two little sons!)
It was great to welcome Makito Matsushima to the
store in April for a special visit to perform for the
Victorian Suzuki Music Conference to demonstrate
organ technique. A handful of students,
accompanied by Suzuki organ teacher, Maureen
Mahon, came to the store and experienced the
Johannus Classic 350 organ. It was well received
by all who attended. The Suzuki organ books are in
stock here at Bernies so please drop in and have a
look.
Please keep an eye on your dateline or phone me
to join the VIP list for a wonderful event in
September where we hope to have 10 Johannus
organs being played at the same time, in
association with our long-time friend David Clarke
from Cooranbong who is the head of Suzuki Organ
Australia, supported by his nation-wide team. We
suspect this will be a world record event and very
well attended.

Christopher Norton Tour
Christopher Norton’s April Tour provided
another opportunity for Victorian teachers
to access this internationally recognised
composer at Bernies Music Land on April
13.
The day was again a huge success with
over 30 teachers in attendance and they
were treated to a morning of musical
discovery. Christopher introduced his
latest composition “Eastern Preludes” - a
wonderful collection of expressive pieces
capturing the essence of different Asian
cultures. Thanks to Michelle and Lester
