When your early morning showers start out warm and end up cold, it is probably time to start thinking about a new water heater. Generally, a water heater lasts between 10 to 15 years and you know it is starting to fail when you notice sediment in your water, water pooling around the water heater or you start running out of hot water sooner than normal. The second largest energy expense in your home is water heating, accounting for about 18% of your utility bill. Therefore, researching for the best energy-efficient water heater is worth your time. Look for the Energy Star ® and EnergyGuide labels with categories reflecting high-efficiency gas non-condensing, gas condensing, electric heat pump, gas tankless and solar. The most popular water heater styles include: conventional natural gas/propane and electric tank water heaters, hybrid hot water heaters, heat pump water heaters and tankless water heaters. The natural gas on- demand or tankless water heaters are 30% more energy efficient than standard natural gas storage tank water heaters, according to energy.gov. The heat pump water heater usually uses 50% less electricity to heat water than the conventional electric water heaters and solar water heaters are environmentally friendly, so consider it as well. Tips for water heating • When buying a new dishwasher or clothes washer, consider purchasing a water-saving Energy Star ® model in order to reduce hot water use. • Install aerating, low-flow faucets and showerheads. • Fix leaky faucets. • To avoid burns and receive comfortable hot water, set the thermostat on the water heater to 120ºF. When should you replace your water heater? Age of the water heater – An average lifespan of a water heater is 10-15 years.
