Central Coast Aloha Barefoot Winners off to HawaiiAloha Barefoot Bowls Promotion is an initiative of Bowls NSW with the primary objective to help clubs actively engage with new members in their local communities. Five winning teams from throughout NSW plus one random lucky draw from all participants will fly off to Hawaii for three great days of bowling at the Honolulu Bowling Club on 10th February 2015.

Twelve clubs entered the spirit of the Bowls NSW Aloha Barefoot Bowls promotion with a total of 306 participants (153 teams) striving to win two trips to Hawaii. That meant 153 new bowlers were introduced to the sport of lawn bowls on the Central Coast in a competitive manner as a result of this innovative event. The twelve participating clubs played qualifying rounds to produce twelve winners to play-off in regional finals played at Woy Woy BC and Davistown RSL BC on Saturday and Sunday 29th and 30th November.

At Woy Woy six teams contested the knockout final series with the final being played between The Entrance’s Les Simpson and friend Russell Maxwell up against the local Woy Woy bowling club identity John Fisher and his next door neighbor of 23 years Paul Messham. The Entrance team looked the part in matching Hawaiian shirts but they were outplayed by the home team who had strong spectator support.

Woy Woy Aloha Regional Finalists (L/R) Winners Woy Woy’s Paul Mesham and John Fisher (holding the magic

Bowl) wave the Aloha banner with runners-up Les Simpson and Russell Maxwell The Entrance

At Davistown RSL another six teams contested a regional final series with non bowler Rick Brunell teamed with Terry Milton Toukley RSL against Davistown’s Henry Dagasso and his partner Annette Thompson in a high standard final. It was a close tussle with the Toukley RSL team snaring victory by just one shot.

Davistown RSL Aloha Regional Finalists (L/R) Winners Rick Brunell, Terry Milton Toukley RSL with runner-up Henry Dagasso and Annette Thompson

With two regional bowling winners coming from the Central Coast, Ettalong’s David Weige and partner Lloyd Kerr couldn’t believe their luck when they were named as the random draw winners. That means the Central Coast will have six participants (3 teams) competing in the unofficial world championship of Barefoot Bowls played at the Honolulu Bowling Club.

There is every likelihood Bowls NSW will repeat the Aloha Bowls Promotion in 2015 so it is strongly suggested that bowlers start the recruiting process to find a non registered bowling partner as it is a fun way to introduce new bowlers into our sport and what is more, you may just win a trip to Hawaii on the green or out of the hat.

David Weige is dressed and ready to party in Hawaii. The dreadlocks are an optional extra and part of his Hawaiian fashion wardrobe.

Pre-Pennant Speculation: Speculation surrounding likely player movements leading up to the forthcoming pennant season is always rife around this time of the year. Our super snoop has sniffed out the following likely player movements in the top grades but adds a word of caution as clearance papers are yet to be sighted in many cases. The grapevine whispers are .…. An outstanding result by all three clubs!

JR Appointed to State Match Committee: Ettalong’s John Roberts was honoured to be asked to join State Match Committee to fill a casual vacancy and Central Coast administrators and bowlers are delighted he accepted after a little arm-twisting. JR is a practical down-to-earth bowls administrator and is sensitive to the needs of today’s bowlers and he will certainly have the best interests of our game at heart in this role. His duties as Bowls Coordinator at Ettalong Memorial remain unchanged.
