AROUND THE DIOCESE AND BEYOND SUPPORT FOR BUSHFIRE VICTIMS... On the Australia Day weekend, Catholics across Australia will be invited to contribute to a national collection for the assistance of victims of the current terrible bushfires in the eastern States. Rather than duplicate collections, the Australia Day Collection will give to the Vinnies Bushfire Appeal. Church agencies across a range of levels are heavily involved assisting people locally at this terrible time. Interested parish- ioners could read the Statement by Archbishop Mark Coleridge, President of the Australian Catholic Bishops’’ Conference for further information go to website at www.catholic.org.au/bushfires Parishioners who would like to make a donation before the Australia Day weekend could do so to the Vinnies Bushfire Appeal directly at one of the Vinnies shops or (donate.vinnies.org.au) God bless, Bishop Gerard. Jesus’ baptism marks his first appearance in public ministry. He comes among sinners, people longing for God, who have already heard about his coming. One can imagine the hush of those gathered around the river Jordan as they realise the man who comes from among them is the one they have heard about. Jesus defies the expectations of John the Baptist, asking to be baptised. He is plunged into the water even though there is no sin to be cleansed. As he resurfaces, there is a moment which confirms that the same man who made a humble entry into the crowd of people, a humble entry into humanity, is in fact God. A beautiful moment reveals the mysterious inner working of the Trinity, with the spirit descending upon Jesus, and the voice of God the Father speaking of God the Son. Pray.com.au (Reflections)
