    Aromatherapy update

    1. Overview what is Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a kind of therapy that uses concentrated aromatic oils (essential

oils) from plants to promote physical and mental health. It is used to improve

moods, induce relaxation, and help prevent and treat some illnesses. The essential

oils used in aromatherapy are processed from hers, fruits, !owers, wood, twi"s,

leaves, and resin. They are taken y a person throu"h room di#usion, inhalation,

    massa"es, aths, and more.

There are several essential oils in aromatherapy. $ach essential oil is recommended

for a numer for purposes that will e discussed later on.

    Additional historical references

Aromatherapy is used y various civili%ations throu"hout history. &moke from

urnin" plants were said to e one of the earliest forms of aromatherapy. Thissmoke was traditionally used for reli"ious purposes, especially in drivin" away evil

spirits from a sick person's ody. eople eventually noticed that essential oils

improve people's health so they used them as medicine for various illnesses. They

also invented di#erent ways of procurin" these oils. owadays, aromatherapy has

ecome a thrivin" part of complementary medicine.

    *ethods for $xtractin" $ssential Oils

There are several ways to ac+uire essential oils from plants. ere are some of the

    common methods-

    $xpression (or cold pressin")

In expression, pressure is applied to the outer rind of the fruit. The pulp and the

white pith are discarded, and the rind is s+uee%ed to express the li+uid within it.

This li+uid is collected and left to stand to enale the oil to !oat to the surface.

hen the separation process of /uice and oil is complete, the oil is retrieved.

    $n!eura"e

$n!eura"e is recommended for 0asmine ecause this method protects the delicate

!owers from ein" urned. In en!eura"e, the !ower petals are sprinkled over

puried fat, which asor the essence. The petals are removed when the petals

fade, and new ones are sprinkled over to replace them. This can last for weeks until

the fat ecomes saturated. Afterwards, the petals are removed and the fat is dilutedin alcohol and shaken for 23 hours to separate the essential oil. The product is

    known as pomade.

    &olvent extraction

&olvent extraction produces the most concentrated essences. The !owers are

placed upon perforated metal trays in sealed containers. A solvent tank is at one

end while a vacuum still is at the other. A li+uid solvent !ows over the !owers and

  • 7/24/2019 Aromatherapy Update

    2/22

dissolves the essential oil while it drains into the still. The solvent leaves a semi4

solid sustance that contains the !owers' aromatic material and plant waxes. The

wax is separated throu"h viratin" it in alcohol. The end result is called the

    5asolute'.

    6O2 extraction

ypercritical caron dioxide extraction (6O2 extraction) makes use of caron

dioxide "as that is pressuri%ed until it turns into a li+uid. This li+uid is used as a

solvent that di#uses throu"h the plant material. After a time, the aromatic

components of the plant seep into the solvent, which is retrieved later on.

6ompared to other methods, 6O2 extraction can otain additional sustances from

the plant. It also ears the closes resemlance to the ori"inal plant aroma.

$xamples of 6O2 extract oils are 7erman chamomile, calendula, "in"er and

    frankincense.

so it ecomes air ti"ht, and leavin" it in a cool and dark area for a couple of days.

Aout a week or so, remove the plant material. The oil that remains is your essential

    oil.

    Subsection on carrier oils

    enition

6arrier oils are pure and unrened ve"etale oils that dilute essential oils so theycan e applied to the skin. De"etale oils should e cold pressed and ltered

without usin" solvent, and they need to e free from impurities and additives so

they can e safe for the skin. *ineral oils are not used as carrier oils ecause they

do not penetrate the skin layer and they also prevent the essential oils from

    activatin".
