Although the practice of using essential oils dates back to the Egyptians, the term aromatherapywas coinedby Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, a French chemist in 1928. If you haven't used Essential Oils before, introducing them into your lifestyle is quite easy and can be both fun as wellas therapeutically beneficial. Below are a few ways in which you can get started. These suggestions are provided asguidelines only. It is important to remember that essential oils are flammable. When trying an essential oil for the firsttime, use a small quantity such as a single drop to ensure that you do not have a sensitivity to the oil.

SIMPLE INHALATION - Place 3 -4 drops of essential oil on a tissue. Place the tissue next to your nose and inhale. TryLavender to help reduce anxiety and improve sleep; Eucalyptus for congestion; or Peppermint when you are feelingfatigued or tired.

STEAM INHALATION - Pour 2 cups of boiling water into a bowl. Add 2 -8 drops of essential oil into the water.(Fewer drops are needed when using an oil such as Cinnamon or Eucalyptus, that might cause mucous membraneirritation.) Place your nose about a foot away from the bowl and inhale. Steam inhalation is great for helping withcolds and flu. Do not use steam inhalation if you have a heart or respiratory condition. Try Lemon, Orange and othercitrus oils for improving mood and increasing mental alertness.

ROOM FRESHENING - Pour 2 cups of boiling water into a bowl and add 10 - 12 drops of essential oil into the water.Use fewer drops when using oils such as Cinnamon or Eucalyptus. You alternatively can use an "Aroma Ring" orelectric diffuser.

GENERAL HOUSEHOLD USE - Add a few drops of oil to your trash can, washing machine, vacuum cleaner (one wayto do this is to add a few drops to a tablespoon of baking soda placed in a dish and then to vacuum up the mix), sink

drain, on a tissue for placement amongst garments in your dresser. You can also place a few drops of insect repellingessential oil onto tissues or cotton balls and place them next to doorways and windows to help repel insects. (Usecaution around children and pets and be careful not to apply the essential oil directly onto surfaces that might bestained or damaged by the oil.)

IN THE BATH - Add 8 - 15 drops of essential oil to your bath water after the water has finished running. TryEucalyptus or Ginger for muscle tension; Bergamot or Lavender to help reduce feelings of stress; for something moreexotic try Ylang-ylang, Patchouli or Cardamom.
