Setting The Stage The wins continue to pile up for the Black Knights as they have won seven consecutive games following Tuesday evening’s narrow escape at Manhattan. Army is off to its best start since 2000- 01 with an 8-1 record and will look to remain undefeated on the road when it travels to Rider on Friday. The Broncs are coming off a neutral-site loss to Quinnipiac on Sunday and currently show a 3-4 mark. Army’s non-conference schedule is quickly winding down with only six of its 15 non- Patriot League games remaining. Rider is the second of three consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foes for the Black Knights, as Army will return home on Monday to host Loyola. Army-Rider Series The Black Knights and Broncs have squared off five times in beginning in the 1995-96 season, and most recently in 2007-08. Rider has a 3-2 advantage after capturing the last contest in overtime, 66-61, in Lawrenceville, N.J. Rider enters the game 0-2 at home this season, but is 1-1 against the Black Knights previously on its home court. Army is 5-0 on the road, its best mark since 1983- 84. Historically the games between the Broncs and Black Knights have been close, and with Rider averaging 57.7 points per game to Army’s 60.4 average, this one could prove no different. Last Time OutArmy improved to 5-0 on the road this season by escaping Manhattan with a 54-49 win Tuesday evening at Draddy Gymnasium. Senior guard Anna Simmers was the Black Knights’ leading scorer for the fourth time this season and second consecutive game as she totaled 21 to bump Army to its seventh consecutive victory. Despite a 16-point lead in the second half, the Jaspers made it a game late, shrinking Army’s lead to three with eight seconds remaining before the Black Knights sealed the win with a pair of Kelsey Minato free throws. Despite committing a season-high 21 turnovers, leading to 25 Manhattan points, Army clung to the lead it captured at 8:59 in the first half and never let go. For the full box score and recap, see page 23.

U-TurnArmy was happy to have its leading scorer from 2011-12, Anna Simmers, returning to the lineup this season. That feeling turned to concern after the first four games when Simmers reached double figures just once and was shooting a lowly 20.3 percent from the field, including 0-15 from outside. Fast forward through the last five games and Simmers has emerged as the player she proved to be last season. Between 11/21 and 12/4, Simmers has recorded three 20+ point games to become Army’s leading scorer with a 15.6 ppg clip. Her shooting percentage more than doubled (.440) during the five-game span, including 40 percent from three, and she is the reigning Patriot League Player of the Week.

Break Out The BroomsIn the fourth edition of the Patriot League Weekly Awards, Army swept both honors as senior Anna Simmers was tabbed Player of the Week and Kelsey Minato was named Rookie of the Week. Simmers averaged 21 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game while Minato went for 11.0 ppg and 5.0 rpg. The sweep of the conference’s weekly accolades is the fifth in Army history dating back to the league’s inaugural season in 1990-91. The most recent Black Knight duo to reign in the weekly certificates was Rookie Erin Anthony and Player Cara Enright on Dec. 17, 2007. The other three Army tandems to sweep the Patriot League awards are: Enright (R) and Alex McGuire (P) on 1/23/06; Katie Macfarlane (R) and Therese Kelley (P) on 2/26/01; and Karen Guenter (R) and Kim Kawamoto (P) on 12/16/90.

Of National ImportanceThe NCAA released its second installment of statistical rankings on 12/3 and Army ranked among the top 100 in five team categories. Of 343 Division I teams, the Black Knights listed 21st in winning percentage (.875), 25th in rebounding margin (+9.6), 39th in turnovers per game (14.8), 48th in blocked shots per game (4.8) and 85th in scoring defense (56.3). Individually, four Black Knights ranked among the top 250 Division I players in five categories. Sophomore Aimee Oertner ranked seventh in the country in blocked shots per game (3.38), 14th in double-doubles (4) and 67th in rebounding (9.8). Sophomore Olivia Schretzman listed 85th in rebounding (9.3), freshman Kelsey Minato was 130th in free-throw percentage (.813) and senior Anna Simmers was 182nd in scoring (14.9). To see how Army stacks up on both the conference and national level, see page 8.

Six For 20Through nine games this season, Army has boasted a 20-point scorer six times. Senior Anna Simmers leads the Black Knights with four 20-point showings, most recently with a game-high 21 at Manhattan on 12/4. An Army player tallied 20 or more points on 11 occasions last season with Simmers responsible for seven of those games. Sophomore Olivia Schretzman joined the 20-point club against Columbia on 11/28 following a 20-point, 11-rebound showing, while freshman Kelsey Minato put on a 20-point show at Air Force on 11/23, thanks in part to 13 points from the foul line. The Black Knights are undefeated (6-0) this season when at least one Army player reaches the 20-point mark.

Inside JobArmy eclipsed the 50-rebound mark for the first time since March 8, 2008, on 11/9 at Wagner with its 54-board performance. The 54 caroms are the most by a Black Knight box-out contingent since Dec. 19, 2005, when Army snagged the same amount against Gardner-Webb. Crashing the boards led to 23 second-chance points, 17 more than their adversaries of Wagner. Army repeated with a 50-rebound showing at FDU on 11/15, and currently averages 44.1 boards per game, 9.3 more than its opponents, the most in the Patriot League. Army boasts three of the top-10 rebounders in the conference, led by Olivia Schretzman (4th; 9.4) and followed by Aimee Oertner (5th; 9.2) and Anna Simmers (10th; 6.6). The Black Knights have outrebounded their opponents seven times this season and are 6-1 when doing so.

Charitable ContributionsArmy has relied on success at the charity stripe fairly often this season with the most prominent example being the Air Force win on 11/23. Freshman Kelsey Minato set the Army women’s basketball single-game record for free-throws made with 13 as the Black Knights edged the Falcons by just four points (72-68). Army made 32 freebies as a team, the most since sinking 33-of-50 in a nine-point win at American on 1/12/02. Minato’s mark snapped Katie Macfarlane’s single-game FTM record of 12 set against Bucknell on 2/23/03. The Black Knights, who are 6-0 when attempting more FTs than their opponents, are averaging 15.6 FTM per game this season, 5.6 more than their opponents.

Road WarriorsWith a 65-62 win at Wagner on 11/9, the Black Knights ended a losing streak in season openers on the road which dated back to the 1987-88 season. Army followed with wins at FDU (11/15), Weber State (11/21), Air Force (11/23) and most recently at Manhattan (12/4) to open its road slate 5-0 for the first time since 1983-84. The 1983-84 squad began its road schedule with a 4-0 record before falling to Nebraska-Omaha in Miami, Fla., a loss would later be overturned after Nebraska-Omaha was found to have an ineligible player. That Army team would win one more road game following that to technically improve to 6-0 before its first road loss. The Black Knights will have the opportunity to go 6-0 on the road this season when they travel to Rider on Friday night.

About The BroncsRider enters Friday night’s contest with a 3-4 record, most recently splitting a pair of games at the Brown Classic in Providence, R.I. The Broncs defeated the host Bears, 57-47, on 12/1 before falling to Quinnipiac, 72-57, on 12/2. One of RU’s three wins came opposite Patriot League member Lafayette - a 68-64 decision in Easton, Pa.

Rider is led by a pair of double-digit scores in Sironda Chambers and MyNeshia McKenzie. Chambers is averaging a team-best 16.1 ppg, while McKenzie ranks second with a 13.3 clip but boasts the top rebounding mark at 9.4 rpg. The pair also leads the team with 11 assists apiece.

The Broncs are shooting 33.1 percent on the season, led by Chambers’ 42.7-percent mark, while they have struggled from outside, making less than one out of every four attempts. Mikal Johnson has a team-high 10 three-pointers, while Chambers’ 47.4 percent success rate from beyond the arc is the best on the squad.

Defensively, Caitlin Bopp leads Rider with 14 blocks, while McKenzie has been credited with 10 steals.

*Academy record

Side Of StuffingFreshman Aimee Oertner has made shooting difficult for the opposition as she has totaled 28 blocks through her first nine collegiate games, including a six-stuff performance at Weber State (11/21). The 28 rejections are more than any Army player totaled throughout all 30 games of 2011-12 season. The Black Knights’ leading shot blocker a season ago was Jen Hazlett, who disrupted 19 attempts. Oertner’s six swats against the Wildcats are the most by an Army player since Erin Anthony (USMA ‘11) rejected seven field goal attempts by Lehigh on 1/16/11.

Army Blocked Shots Records:Game: 9 - Pam Pearson (vs. St. Francis [Ill.], 1983-84) Season: 94 - Pam Pearson (27g; 1983-84)Career: 222 - Erin Anthony (116g; 2007-11)

Thrice As NiceIn Army’s 57-52 win at Fairleigh Dickinson on 11/15, three Army players notched double-doubles. Senior G Anna Simmers snagged her first of the year and third career with 21 points and 10 rebounds, followed by freshman F/C Aimee Oertner’s second of the year (16 points, 10 rebounds) and sophomore F Olivia Schretzman’s first career double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds). Oertner leads all Black Knights with four double-doubles through nine games, while Schretzman has tallied three of her own.

Rockin’ RookieArmy boasted the top freshman in the conference for two consecutive weeks as Aimee Oertner was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on the first two ballots of the season (11/12 and 11/19). Oertner, who was also named the conference’s top rookie of the week by CollegeSportsMadness.com, became the first Black Knight since Nalini Hawkins (West Point ’11) to earn back-to-back Patriot League Rookie of the Week plaudits. Hawkins garnered the honors Nov. 26 and Dec. 3, 2007. Classmate Kelsey Minato earned Army’s third Rookie of the Week certificate on 12/3 following impressive performances against Columbia (11/28) and Yale (12/1).

Make A Great First ImpressionArmy won its 2012-13 season opener on 11/9 at Wagner thanks in large part to impressive debuts by a pair of freshmen. Kelsey Minato, who started at point guard, and F/C Aimee Oertner combined for 30 points (46.1 percent of Army’s total) and 18 rebounds. Oertner also caused a commotion on the defensive end by blocking four shots. The newcomer from Slatington, Pa., led the nation in blocks during her senior season at Northern Lehigh HS.

Long Distance CarrierFreshman Kelsey Minato drained five three-pointers in Army’s loss to St. Francis (N.Y.) on 11/12. The five triples are the most by a Black Knight in a single game since Jessie Coiffard dialed up five against Lehigh on Feb. 12, 2011. Minato leads Army with 11 made threes this season, shooting at a Black Knight-best 32.4-percent clip.

Book EndsArmy outrebounded Wagner by 24 (54-30) on 11/9 in head coach Dave Magarity’s 100th win at Army. The 24-rebound margin was the most since 11/15/06, when the Black Knights boxed out St. Thomas Aquinas to a 46-19 margin (+27). What’s so special about that game? It was Magarity’s first win at West Point.

Working The Paint Like An ArtistIn Army’s 77-point effort at Weber State on 11/21, 49.3 percent of the Black Knights scoring occurred inside the paint. Army totaled 38 points in the paint, the most since the Black Knights totaled the same amount at Yale on 1/1/12. Freshman F/C Aimee Oertner led the charge as 10 of her 14 points came inside the lane. Through nine games, 62.1 percent of Oertner’s scoring has come from shots in the lane, while over 40 percent of all of Army’s points have originated in the paint. For the full point breakdown, see the chart on page 3.

Precision At The PointFor the second season in a row, Army’s opening-night starting lineup featured a newcomer at the point guard position. Freshman Kelsey Minato ran the point with precision, turning the ball over just once in 36 minutes of ball handling, while tallying 12 points and six rebounds in her collegiate debut. She followed that performance with a 15-point, one-turnover showing against St. Francis (N.Y.) on 11/12, while her peak performance thus far was at Air Force (11/23). Minato hit the Falcons for a career-high 20 points and once again, just one TO. Through nine games, the freshman play caller has just 16 TOs despite playing a team-high 37.7 minutes per contest. Her 0.94 A/TO ratio is the best on the team, while her 9.9 ppg average lists third.

Man of the CenturyDave Magarity captured his 100th victory as the head coach of Army women’s basketball on 11/9 with a 65-62 win at Wagner. The seventh-year mentor became the third coach in

Army’s 36-year history to reach the triple-digit win threshold, following Harold Johnson (1980-87; 123 wins) and Lynn Chiavaro (1987-98; 132). Magarity, who coached men’s teams at Marist and St. Francis (Pa.) for a combined 23 years, eclipsed the 400-career wins mark last season and currently shows a 420-415 record. Since taking the reins at West Point prior to the 2006-07 season, Magarity has amassed a 107-81 mark, averaging nearly 17 wins per year.

Check For FreshnessFor the past eight games, Army’s starting lineup has featured two freshmen as G Kelsey Minato and F/C Aimee Oertner got the nods. Minato also started in the season opener at Wagner, marking the second consecutive year head coach Dave Magarity tabbed a freshman to run the point. In 2011-12, a pair of freshmen (Olivia Schretzman, Janelle Travis) started the first seven games as Army compiled a 5-2 record. Since Magarity took the reins in 2006-07, a pair of plebes has been in the starting rotation 22 times, totaling a 17-5 record (.773). Of those 22 games, only one came during Patriot League play – a 56-42 loss to American on 2/17/10.

Extreme Makeover: Court EditionArmy’s home for 23 seasons, Christl Arena, received a facelift during the summer of 2012. The updated court features light wood and dark wood contrasting inside the three-point line and the paint, as well as the ARMY logo, with solid black baselines and sidelines.

Home CookingThe Black Knights are hoping their new-look digs at Christl Arena will bring them as much success as the previous design did. Army is 192-123 (.610) all-time at Christl Arena, including a 10-6 clip in 2011-12. The Black Knights have averaged nearly 10 home wins (9.8) per season under seventh-year head coach Dave Magarity, and are 3-1 so far in 2012-13.

Pocket AcesArmy caught the opposition off guard in 2011-12 thanks to a pair of hidden gems. After averaging just 2.0 ppg through her first two years at West Point, Anna Simmers enjoyed the true definition of a ‘breakout year’. The Alaska native averaged a Patriot League-best 14.8 ppg, including 18.9 against conference foes for the highest average by a Patriot League player since 2003-04. Simmers’ scoring output was supported by then-sophomore Jen Hazlett who added 12.9 ppg (a 10-point bump from 2010-11) while grabbing a team-best 7.5 rpg. Simmers and Hazlett formed the highest scoring duo in the Patriot League since 2002-03, earning All-Patriot League first and second team honors, respectively. After a slow start this season, Simmers has found her scoring groove and is averaging a team-best 15.6 ppg.

Movin’ On UpEntering just her second season on the sidelines, Colleen Mullen was promoted to associate head coach in early July 2012. Mullen, whose primary responsibilities include coaching the guards and serving as recruiting coordinator, came to West Point after a three-year assistant coaching stint at Long Island.

A Welcomed AdditionIn addition to Colleen Mullen’s promotion in the offseason, Army added assistant coach Emily Garner to the staff. Garner came from Long Island where she was an assistant coach and director of basketball operations, after a successful four-year playing career at Patriot League foe Lafayette.

Three Of A KindArmy took home three all-league certificates at the end of 2011-12, as Anna Simmers was named to the All-Patriot League first team, Jen Hazlett earned second-team laurels, and Olivia Schretzman snagged a spot on the all-rookie squad. The three all-league nods were the most by Army since 2007-08. In addition, two Black Knights also picked up academic accolades as Jordan Elliott and Karleen Paulin were named to the conference’s Academic Honor Roll.

‘Tis The [Pre]SeasonAfter finishing the 2011-12 season in a tie for third place (8-6) in the conference standings, Army was tabbed No. 4 in the 2012-13 Patriot League Preseason Poll. The Black Knights collected 66 points and one first-place vote to list behind reigning tournament champion Navy, 2012 regular-season champion American and Holy Cross. In addition, senior guard Anna Simmers was voted to the five-player Preseason All-League Team.

Flashback To Their Last Meeting:Rider 66, Army 61 (OT) - Dec. 12, 2007

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - Rider scored six of its eight overtime points from the free throw line as the Army women’s basketball team fell in a heartbreaking 66-61 showdown in the Garden State on Wednesday night at Alumni Gym. Freshman forward Erin Anthony registered her second double-double of the year with a team-high 15 points and 10 rebounds in the Black Knights’ first overtime test of the season.

Neither team made a field goal in the first two minutes of the extra session, but Rider’s (4-6) pair of free throws put the Broncs ahead 59-57 with under three minutes to play. Ashley Anderson’s layup with the shot clock winding down then put the Broncs in front 61-57. Junior forward Megan Evans scored the Black Knights’ (5-5) first point of the extra session on a free throw with 2:14 remaining to make it a three-point game, 61-58, but Rider outscored Army 5-3 down the stretch to secure the win.

Army gave up a 10-point lead midway through the game in the final minutes of regulation, allowing the Broncs back into the mix down the stretch.

A traditional three-point play for junior guard Alex McGuire her first points of the game -- coming out of a media timeout tied the game for the eighth time, 55-55, with 2:14 on the clock. A pair of Rider free throws on the other end put the Broncs back on top by two on the ensuing possession. McGuire came up big again, connecting on a 10-foot jumper from the right baseline to tie it at 57-all with 1:04 left.

The Black Knights came up with a key defensive stop on the other end, allowing head coach Dave Magarity to call a full timeout with 28.9 seconds on the clock. Army threw the ball away on the next possession with officials insisting that Rider did not tip the ball out of bounds.

Coming out of a full Rider timeout, the Broncs collected back-to-back offensive rebounds, but were unable to convert on three consecutive attempts. After a Rider foul gave Army possession out of bounds with 1.7 ticks remaining, freshman Nalini Hawkins’ long jumper fell short and forced overtime.

After taking a 30-25 halftime lead, the Black Knights scored nine of the first 14 points of the second stanza to spread the margin to 39-29 following an Anthony fastbreak layin with 16:10 to go. That marked the largest lead by either team on the night. Senior guard Cara Enright found her stroke midway through the run, scoring five quick points in the span of less than a minute. Enright scored Army’s first three of the game from the right side at the 16:35 mark.

The Broncs would not go away, however, embarking on an 11-0 run over the next 4:33. That spurt gave Rider its first lead of the game, 40-39, with 11:37 on the clock. The teams traded three-point buckets around the nine-minute mark, with Enright burying her second triple of the half to put Army in front 46-45 (8:52).

A three-pointer from Amanda Sepulveda leveled the score at 50-all with 6:26 remaining in the game. Enright drove the lane on the next Army possession, laying the ball in through traffic to regain the Black Knights’ lead. Rider took its largest lead to that point, 55-52, just over three minutes later, as Danielle Constantino drained a three with 3:18 to go.

In first-half action, Army took a 16-11 lead just under nine minutes into the game, with half of the Black Knights’ points coming in the paint. Rider went on to score the next four points to tie the score at 16-all at the 9:05 mark. Despite Rider tying the game twice under the 10-minute mark, the Black Knights never relinquished the lead.

A textbook inbounds play for senior Cara Enright gave Army its largest lead of the half, 30-24, with 23.5 seconds left, while a single Rider free throw made for a 30-25 halftime

The Black Knights outscored Rider 28-10 in the paint before the break, while also holding a 12-0 advantage in points off turnovers. That trend continued throughout the game, as Army outdid Rider 46-24 in the lane.

Army shot 44 percent (28-of-64) on the night, while Rider just managed a 40 percent (21-of-53) mark. Anthony’s 15 points led all players, while Enright scored 10 points after intermission to finish with 14 points.

Four Rider players eclipsed the double-digit mark in scoring.

Led by Anthony’s 10 boards and Evans’ eight, the Black Knights held a 39-33 advantage on the boards.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Seventh-year head coach Dave Magarity recorded a milestone win on Friday night with a 65-62 victory at Wagner. Magarity became the third Army women’s basketball coach in program history to reach 100 wins, simultaneously ending a 27-year, 15-game losing streak of road-game season openers for the Black Knights.

Magarity’s Black Knights (1-0) got a huge boost from freshman Aimee Oertner, making her collegiate debut against the Seahawks (0-1). Oertner racked up a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with tying the game high of 18 points. Junior Jen Hazlett shared the scoring lead with Oertner with 18 points, 15 of which came in an explosive second half.

Oertner led the Army rebounding charge which combined for 54 total boards, the most by a Black Knight squad since Dec. 19, 2005, in a win against Gardner-Webb. The 54 rebounds also sparked Army’s scoring contingent, as the Black Knights racked up 23 second-chance points.

Army trailed at the half, 32-28, due in large part to shooting just 28.6 percent (10-of-35) from the floor, including 2-of-8 from three.

Despite the slow start by the team as a whole, freshman Kelsey Minato came out firing after getting the start at the point in her first collegiate competition. Minato was 4-for-8 from the field, collecting nine points and four rebounds during her first half of college basketball.

The visiting Black Knights grabbed the lead just once in the first half, 8-7 at 15:25.

The second half was a different story for Army, despite Wagner striking first and matching its largest lead of the game (six). The Black Knights chipped away at the Seahawks’ lead as sophomore Olivia Schretzman scored two of her 11 points on Army’s second possession of the half.

Wagner maintained a two-to-four point lead through much of the first half of the final stanza, until Army captured its first lead of the half at the 9:58 mark off a Hazlett fast-break feed from senior Anna Simmers.

The lead changed four more times until the Black Knights grasped it at 3:03 when Oertner drilled a pair of free-throws, despite going to the line with a 0-for-4 mark against her in the second half. The plebe finished the game with a 4-for-9 showing from the charity stripe.

Wagner tied the game at 59-59 with 2:38 remaining when Chanez Robinson finished a layup. Robinson was one of three Seahawks to reach double figures with her 12-point output. Marie Archambault totaled a team-best 17 points, including five baskets from long range, while Stephanie Blais added 13.

The final two minutes was Hazlett’s time to shine as she hit the go-ahead jumper while also added a pair of game-clinching free throws with 13 seconds remaining.

Army had a three-point lead when Wagner got the ball back with 13 seconds left, and it was Hazlett’s defensive tie-up that caused the Seahawks to burn a trio of timeouts and eventually throw the ball away, turning the ball back over to the Black Knights who ran out the final seconds.

Magarity, who collected his 400th career win a season ago, joins Harold Johnson (123; 1980-87) and Lynn Chiavaro (132; 1987-98) as 100-win head coaches in Army women’s basketball history.

The win at Wagner was the Black Knights’ first on the road in a season opener since 1985, and also their first triumph over the Seahawks away from West Point. Army improved to 5-3 against Wagner in a series which dates back to the 1978-79 season.

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army women’s basketball home opener was spoiled by visiting St. Francis on Monday night as the Terriers’ scored a 59-47 victory at West Point. Freshman point guard Kelsey Minato tallied a game-high 15 points, but poor team shooting and turnovers hamstrung the Black Knights during their first game on their newly renovated home court.

Army (1-1) shot just 25.8 percent from the field (16-62), including 21.1 percent in the sputtering second half. Army’s shooting clip was its lowest since March 5, 2011, when the Black Knights managed just a 23.2-percent showing at Bucknell. St. Francis (1-0) responded by shooting 42.6 percent (20-47) for the game, including an 11-of-24 clip in the second half.

Despite the lack of shooting accuracy, Army once against crashed the boards with determination, out-rebounding its opponent for the second-straight game. The Black Knights tallied 46 caroms as sophomore Olivia Schretzman and freshman Aimee Oertner grabbed 10 apiece.

Oertner, Army’s leading scorer and rebounder in its season-opening win at Wagner last Friday, committed a pair of fouls within the first 5:30 of the game, causing her playing time to dwindle to six minutes in the first stanza and 13 in the second.

Minato, however, came out firing, hitting 4-of-6 attempts from beyond the arc through the first 20 minutes to enter intermission with a game-high 12 points. She finished the game 5-of-9 from three, to go along with three rebounds and three steals. The five made baskets from deep were the most by an Army player since Feb. 12, 2011. With 15 points against SFC, Minato has averaged 13.5 through her first two collegiate contests.

With 11 first-half turnovers and Oertner on the bench in foul trouble, Army trailed at the half for the second game in a row, this time by a 27-26 margin. For the game, the Black Knights committed 17 turnovers which St. Francis turned into 27 points.

The second half looked like Army was in for yet another back-and-forth battle as the lead changed four times within the first 3:19. Unfortunately for Army, once St. Francis grabbed the lead at 16:41, they would never relinquish it. The Black Knights got within two at 5:14 after junior Jen Hazlett sunk a pair of free throws, but the Terriers slowly swelled their lead back up until it maxed out at 12 at the final buzzer.

Army’s leading scorers from a year ago, Hazlett and All-Patriot League first teamer Anna Simmers, went a combined 5-of-29 from the field, while Army’s bench accounted for just five points.

St. Francis, which earned its first win in 11 tries against the Black Knights, was led by Eilidh Simpson, who totaled 14 points, six rebounds and three assists. Jaymee Veney was just shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine boards.

HACKENSACK, N.J. – Senior guard Anna Simmers ended her scoring rut on Friday evening with a 21-point performance to lead all scorers in Army’s 57-52 victory at Fairleigh Dickinson. Simmers was one of three Black Knights to record double digit points and rebounds, as women’s basketball improved to 2-1 on the year and dropped FDU to 0-3.

Nine of Simmers’ 21 points came from the free-throw line, including six in the final minute to seal the win for the Black Knights. Army’s top scorer from 2011-12, who had just 11 combined points through the first two games of the year, snagged 10 rebounds for her first double-double since Feb. 18, 2012, and the third of her career.

Freshman Aimee Oertner collected a double-double for the second time in three collegiate games, registering 16 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Olivia Schretzman was credited with her first career double-double with a 10-point, 10-rebound showing. Schretzman has reached double-digit rebounds in all three games this season. Oertner also added four blocks.

Army shot 30.5 percent (18-59) from the floor on the game but just 1-18 from three. The Black Knights made up for it, however, at the charity stripe, making 20-of-25 attempts from the line, including a decisive 16-of-18 clip in the second half.

The Black Knights got off to a slow start, totaling just 20 points in the first half – their lowest output of the season. Fortunately for Army, FDU sputtered out of the gate as well, shooting below 30 percent (8-27) and tallying just 18 points. The Black Knights took their first halftime lead of the season into the locker room, after freshman Bridget Ryan scooped in a layup for her first collegiate field goal in the final seconds of the stanza.

The second set of 20 minutes was a different story as Simmers cracked the second-half scoring column just 20 seconds into the period to push Army’s lead to four. FDU chipped away at the margin before taking it over at 17:21, and eventually pushing its lead to as much as eight with just under nine minutes to play.

The three-pronged attack of Simmers, Oertner and Schretzman kicked it into gear at that point, scoring 21 of Army’s final 23 points. The Black Knights grabbed its first lead in nearly 13 minutes at 5:54 thanks to a 9-0 run, with Oertner responsible for five of those points.

The Knights were hit with their seventh team foul of the second half at that point, as the Black Knights spent much of the final five minutes at the free-throw line. Army’s 80-percent showing from the stripe was a season best.

FDU cut Army’s lead to one with 2:56 remaining, but a pair of missed free throws and a crucial steal by junior Jen Hazlett gave the ball back to the Black Knights, meaning more trips to the foul line. Army stretched its lead to as much as eight in the final seconds, before FDU’s second-leading scorer Erika Livermore chucked up a three-pointer at the buzzer which went in. Danielle Pankey led the Knights with 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting, while Livermore grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds.

“I thought we did a really great job of changing defenses for the first time all year,” said Army head coach Dave Magarity. “We haven’t played a lot of zone, and it’s the first time we’ve ever really showed a 2-3 matchup, and we did a good job of it in the first half. I felt comfortable going to it in the second half.

Army banged the boards again, outrebounding its opponent (50-35) for the third consecutive game and reaching the 50-rebound mark for the second time in 2012-13.

Game Notes: Army improved to 7-3 all-time against FDU, including 3-2 in Hackensack, N.J. … Army is 2-0 in its first two road games of the season for the first time since 1987 … Army has won back-to-back road games for the first time since 1/7/11 and 1/13/11 … Army was 10-6 a season ago when leading at the half.

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army women’s basketball held on to defeat the visiting University of Pennsylvania Quakers, 58-53, in a game which featured runs of 10-1, 9-0 and 16-2 and 11 lead changes. The Black Knights (3-1) captured their first home win of the season after shooting a season-high 38.2 percent from floor, led by a combined 30-point effort from a pair of Army post players in sophomore Olivia Schretzman and freshman Aimee Oertner.

Schretzman tallied a season-high 18 points, two shy of her career best, while Oertner snagged her third double-double with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Oertner’s 12 caroms match her career best. Army’s stingy defense kept Penn’s scoring in check through most of the first half. The Quakers (0-3), which came into the game averaging 58 points per game, hit the game’s first field goal (17:40), but were held without another one until the 10:12 mark as the Black Knights went on a 10-1 run.

Army summoned up another run, this time an 11-2 streak to push its lead to 23-12 with 3:15 remaining. The Quakers responded with their strongest effort of the half, as Penn shrunk the Black Knights’ lead to one (23-22) at the halftime buzzer.

Penn’s run, which shrunk Army’s first-half lead, carried into the second half after Kathleen Roche drained a three pointer 36 seconds into the second half as the Quakers took their first lead since 16:17 of the first half. Roche’s trey was followed with one by Keiera Ray, as Penn’s run built to 16-2 over a period of six minutes, 20 seconds.

Schretzman knotted the score, 28-28, at 16:27, before the lead changed hands seven times over the next six minutes. However, once Army grabbed the lead at 10:58 thanks to a layup by senior guard Anna Simmers, the Black Knights never relinquished it.

Army maxed its second-half lead at nine with 2:32 remaining off a made free throw by Simmers, but Penn did not go away quietly. The Quakers hit a pair of three in the final two minutes to come within three of the Black Knights, before freshman Kelsey Minato iced the game with a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the contest.

Penn’s Kara Bonenberger, who put up 21 against Army a season ago, was held to one point and three fouls in the first half, before ending with just four points on 1-4 shooting. Ray finished with a game-high 21 points, while Alyssa Baron totaled 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Quakers.

The Black Knights will look to improve upon their blemish-free road record (2-0) in 2012-13 when they take a Thanksgiving Week trip to the Mountain West region. Army will face Weber State on Wednesday, before reigniting its academy rivalry at Air Force on Friday.

Game Notes: Penn and Army tied for rebounds 41-41 … it marked the first time all season Army hadn’t outrebounded its opponent … the win was Army’s first over an Ivy League opponent since 1/9/11 … Army improved to 45-43 all-time against Ivy League opponents and 3-3 against Penn … Army is 3-1 for the third time under head coach Dave Magarity ... the win was the 190th at Christl Arena for Army women’s basketball.

OGDEN, Utah – Army women’s basketball defeated first-time opponent Weber State 77-58 on Wednesday evening at Dee Events Center led by a 26-point scoring effort by senior guard Anna Simmers. Simmers’ season-high showing highlighted an impressive offensive performance by the Black Knights as they remained undefeated on the road this season and improved to 4-1 overall.

Army shot a season-high 47.7 percent (31-65) from the floor, including 7-for-11 from three. Junior Jen Hazlett, who was playing her first collegiate game in her home state of Utah, led the Black Knights’ shooting corps, carrying a perfect 5-for-5 mark until the 12:38 mark in the second half. Hazlett’s 75 percent shooting percentage (6-8) is the best by a Black Knight this season. She finished with 15 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Turnovers plagued the Wildcats (0-4) early, coughing the ball up 10 times in the first seven and-a-half minutes as Army had built up a 17-5 lead by that point. Despite cleaning up their play, WSU trailed by 10 at the half after Simmers totaled 16 of her 26 in the first stanza. Army’s halftime lead was its third consecutive, as the Black Knight would eventually improve to 3-0 when ahead at intermission.

The Wildcats got as close as eight (58-50) with 7:27 left in the game, but Simmers tacked on another eight points before games end to put the game firmly in the Black Knights’ hands.

Another notable performance for Army was by freshman Aimee Oertner who earned her fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Oertner also tacked on six blocks and four assists, both career bests. Sophomore Olivia Schretzman was one rebound shy of a double-double, as her stat line read 12 points, nine rebounds.

Army’s 77 points are the most scored against a Division I opponent since the Black Knights put up 81 against Columbia on Nov. 25, 2007. Army’s shooting percentage was its best since going for 50 percent (21-42) against Bucknell last season (Feb. 4, 2012).

The Black Knights will have a quick turnaround before playing their biggest game so far this season. Army will fly to Colorado Springs, Colo., tomorrow morning in preparation of Friday’s showdown with service academy rival Air Force. The Falcons are 0-3 this season but have yet to play a home game. The Army-Air Force all-time series is tied 7-7, with Army winning the most recent installment back in 2009.

Game Notes: Army improved to 3-0 on the road this season – the first time they have started the season 3-0 in road games since 1983-84 … Army is 4-1 under head coach Dave Magarity for the third time … Army is 111-91 against first-time opponents … Army last defeated a Big Sky Conference foe on 11/28/03 (Portland State, 69-55) … Ciara Jackson had a season-high 4 points … Dave Magarity emptied his bench in the final minutes of the game as all 15 players who traveled entered the game … freshman Brianna Johnson recorded her first collegiate field goal … Army outrebounded (45-35) its opponent for the fourth time this season.

USAFA, Colo. – Freshman Kelsey Minato set an Army women’s basketball record with 13 made free throws as Army defeated academy rival Air Force, 72-68, on Friday evening at Clune Arena. Minato had a team-high 20 points to lead four Black Knights in double figures as Army improved to 5-1 on the season, including a flawless 4-0 mark on the road.

The win did not come easy for the Black Knights as Air Force (0-4) shot nearly 50 percent (26-53) from the floor, but seven points from Minato, including five from the charity stripe, in the final 1:57 sealed the victory for Army.

Sophomore Olivia Schretzman had her second double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman Aimee Oertner chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds. Senior Anna Simmers rounded out Army’s double-digit scorers with her 13-point effort.

Air Force’s defense smothered Army for most of the game and especially in the first half, as the Black Knights were forced to settle for numerous last-second shots as the shot clock nearly expired. The rushed shots resulted in Army shooting just 10-29 (34.5 percent) from the floor in the first 20 minutes, including a combined 3-18 clip by Simmers and junior Jen Hazlett.

Despite a pair of scoreless streaks which stretched nearly eight minutes in the first half, the Black Knights still took a lead into halftime, 32-30, led by nine first-half points from Simmers. Army entered the game 3-0 when leading at the half.

Army’s lead evaporated just three minutes into the second stanza as the game’s leading scorer Alicia Leipprandt scored four of her 23 points in the opening minutes of the half. The Black Knights battled back, recapturing the lead at 13:50 after Minato went 3-for-3 from the line after getting hit on a three-point attempt.

The Falcons made one more strike with just over five minutes remaining, taking a 57-56 advantage, which they held for nearly 90 seconds.

Oertner rallied Army with an and-one layup, giving the Black Knights a two-point edge with 3:41 remaining which they would never relinquish. Army made eight free throws in the final three minutes to clinch the win.

The victory for Army broke the all-time series tie with Air Force as the Black Knights took an 8-7 advantage in the 15-game series.

After five days and two games out west, Army returns home to the friendly confines of West Point’s Christl Arena for its next game. The Black Knights host Columbia on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Lions will travel to West Point with a 1-4 record, falling to fellow Army foe Wagner (61-47) but defeating Fairleigh Dickinson (54-47) three days after the Black Knights accomplished the same feat. Army is 1-1 at Christl Arena this season, most recently topping Penn, 58-53, on Nov. 18.

Game Notes: Army is 5-1 through the first six games of the year for the third time under head coach Dave Magarity … Army improved to 36-37 against its fellow service academies, Navy and Air Force … the win was Magarity’s 104th at Army and 416th of his career … the Black Knights improved to 3-4 in games at Air Force … the five nonconference wins are one shy of their total from the 2011-12 season … Air Force drops to 0-4 for the first time since 2003-04 … prior to Minato’s 13-free throw performance tonight, Katie Macfarlane held the Army record after making 12 vs. Bucknell in 2002-03 … Army’s 32-made free throws were two shy of the Academy record which was set in 1982 … Army eclipsed the 70-point threshold for the second consecutive game … two technical fouls were called in the game – one on Air Force coach Andrea Williams and one on Army forward Olivia Schretzman.

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Sophomore Olivia Schretzman matched her career highs with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead Army to a 61-51 victory over visiting Columbia on Wednesday night at Christl Arena. Schretzman notched her third double-double of the season as Army moved to 6-1 on the season and the Lions dropped to 1-5.

Schretzman put the game on her shoulders after her fellow post player Aimee Oertner, Army’s leading scorer and rebounder entering the game, picked up her third and fourth fouls just 18 seconds apart within the first two minutes of the second half as Army clung to a three-point lead. Oertner would finish with four points, six rebounds, well below her averages of 13.2 and 10.7, respectively.

Columbia grabbed the momentum and soon after took its first lead of the game at the 17:17 mark with Oertner on the bench. The Lions held on to the lead for 2:35 before Schretzman tied the game, 33-33, with 14:42 remaining. The sophomore then took charge, racking up nine points and six rebounds from that point on to make it a two-possession game in favor of the Black Knights.

Army would stretch its lead to nine with 5:20 remaining before Columbia made one last push, but the Lions got no closer than four (53-49 with 2:59 left) as Schretzman iced the game for Army with four of the Black Knights’ final eight points.

The sophomore forward out of Dayton, Ohio, scored 20 points against the Lions last season as well, while the 11 rebounds matched her career best which she recorded in the 2012-13 season opener at Wagner (Nov. 9).

Army once again put up a fight down low, outrebounding its opponent for the fifth time this season and improving to 4-1 when doing so. Junior Jen Hazlett, who had a quiet scoring night, and senior Anna Simmers corralled eight rebounds apiece, while freshman Brianna Johnson grabbed three boards for a career high.

Simmers was a steady scoring force for Army once again as she racked up 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting to move ahead of Oertner as the Black Knights’ top scorer this season with a 13.6 average. Simmers has reached double figures in scoring in four of the last five games, including a season-high 26 at Weber State last week.

Columbia was led by Tyler Simpson who had 11 points and seven rebounds, followed closely by Courtney Bradford’s 10-point, seven-rebound showing. Bradford fouled out with 3:12 remaining and Army leading by six.

Army improved to 6-1 through its first seven games of the season for the first time under the direction of seventh-year head coach Dave Magarity.

Army will face its third Ivy League opponent of the season when Yale travels to West Point on Saturday. Tipoff at Christl Arena is slated for 3 p.m. The Bulldogs are 1-5 after losing to Quinnipiac on Wednesday night. Yale snuck by Army with a one-point win a season ago on New Year’s Day in New Haven, Conn.

Game Notes: Army shot 34 percent from the floor (18-53) but just 2-9 from outside … 51 points by Columbia are the lowest by an Army opponent this season … the sixth nonconference win (with eight games still remaining) matched Army’s total from 2011-12 … the win over Columbia was Army’s second over an Ivy League opponent this season after topping Penn on 11/18 … sophomore Krishawn Tillett had a career-high 4 points … Army improved to 10-3 all-time against Columbia … the Lions become the 14th opponent Army has recorded 10 or more wins against all-time … Army last had six wins in the month of November in 2006.

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior guard Anna Simmers scored a game-high 24 points to lead Army women’s basketball to a hard-fought 53-47 win over visiting Yale on Saturday afternoon at West Point’s Christl Arena. Simmers sparked both the Army offense and defense as the Black Knights held the Bulldogs, who entered the game averaging 70 points per game, to a season-low scoring output.

Along with her 24 points, Simmers added seven rebounds and a game-high five steals, the most by a Black Knight since Feb. 25, 2012, to bump Army to a 7-1 record and drop Yale to 1-6. Army’s 7-1 mark is its best start since the 2000-01 season when the Black Knights began with a 10-1 clip.

Yale came out firing as the Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead just four minutes into the game. The tide changed after that, however, as Yale managed just 10 more points the final 16 minutes of the half, while going without a field goal the final 9:32 of the first stanza.

Freshman Kelsey Minato, who finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, drove to the basket with seconds remaining in the first half and scooped in a layup to give Army its first lead of the game, 22-20. The Black Knights entered the game 5-0 when leading at the half and would improve to 6-0 at game’s end.

No lead was safe for Army, however, as the Bulldogs seemed to make a big three-point basket just went they needed it. Yale finished the game shooting 9-24 from outside, the most threes Army has allowed all season. Conversely, the Black Knights struggled from deep, shooting just 1-8. Army has made just five threes over its last three games.

The second half proved to be more of a back-and-forth battle as the lead changed six times, including four times before the first media time out. Yale seemed to capture the momentum after sophomore Olivia Schretzman was whistled for her third foul of the game with just under 14 minutes to play before getting hit with a technical, her second of the year, at 13:26. Megan Vasquez made both free throws for the Bulldogs to put them back on top, 32-31, but Simmers and Minato responded with the next seven points to put the Black Knights back on top with 13:14 remaining.

Army held on to the lead from that point on but not without Yale threatening. The Black Knights stretched their lead to as much as eight before the Bulldogs cut it to a one-point game, 43-42, with 7:16 left before Army got the margin back up to three possessions, 49-42, with just under four minutes left.

Yale’s Nyasha Sarju made one of her game-high five threes followed by a pair of free throws by Sarah Halejian to trim Army’s advantage to two with 1:40 left, but Schretzman made a game-clinching layup with 36 seconds left to seal it for Army. Sarju finished with a team-high 15 points, while Halejian listed second among the Bulldogs with 12.

The Black Knights shot 41.2 percent for the game, their second-best outing of the season, while holding the Bulldogs to just 31.4 percent shooting. Army outrebounded its opponent for the sixth time this season, 41-29, led by freshman Aimee Oertner’s eight-carom performance.

With seven nonconference wins this season, Army has surpassed its six-game total from 2011-12 and is the most since going 11-6 in non-league games in 2008-09.

Game Notes: Army is 7-1 under seventh-year head coach Dave Magarity for the first time in his tenure … the Black Knights improved to 17-10 against Yale … the 17 wins tie for the most wins in program history against a nonconference opponent … Army is 17-1 against New York Tech but has not played them since 1989-90 … the Black Knights have won six consecutive games for the first time since a six-game winning streak in 2011 (Jan. 3 – Jan. 19) … Army’s starting lineup remained unchanged for the seventh consecutive games as Kelsey Minato, Jen Hazlett, Anna Simmers, Olivia Schretzman and Aimee Oertner were the first five … the Black Knights are 16-5 (.762) when Dave Magarity has two freshmen in the starting lineup.

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Army women’s basketball improved to 5-0 on the road this season by escaping Manhattan with a 54-49 win Tuesday evening at Draddy Gymnasium. Senior guard Anna Simmers was the Black Knights’ leading scorer for the fourth time this season and second consecutive game as she totaled 21 to bump Army to its seventh consecutive victory.

With an 8-1 mark, Army is off to its best start since 2000-01, when the Black Knights began the year with a 10-1 record. Conversely, the Jaspers drop to 1-6 for the first time since 1996-97.

Army found itself in an early hole for the second consecutive game, trailing by as much as five just 1:11 into the game and for much of the first four minutes. The Black Knight defense turned it on, however, as Manhattan went through an eight-minute stretch without a basket as Army went on a 10-0 run.

The Black Knights took their first lead of the game with 8:59 remaining in the half following Simmers’ second made three-pointer of the game, a lead they would never relinquish. Army led by as much as 13 in the first and built on that right out of the gate in the second half as junior Jen Hazlett drilled a three just 30 seconds in. Hazlett would finish with 10 points and a game-high four assists.

Army held a double-digit lead steadily through the first 11 minutes of the second half before a nearly five-minute scoring drought struck the Black Knights between 8:43 and 3:55, during which Manhattan scored six unanswered points, cutting the lead to five, 47-42, with just under five to play. The Black Knights also committed 11 second-half turnovers and a season-high 21 for the game which left the door open for a Manhattan come back.

The Jaspers run was built all on inside shots as they went 0-5 from three in the second half and just 1-of-15 (6.7%) for the game. Meanwhile, the Black Knights were 4-of-9 from outside, their second-highest percentage of the season at 44 percent.

Army relied on free throws once again to clinch the win as its final seven points came from the charity stripe, including three by freshman Aimee Oertner. Manhattan failed to make a field goal in the final two-and-a-half minutes which sealed its fate along with the Black Knights’ 7-for-8 clip at the line in the final minutes.

Manhattan’s Shayna Ericksen had the game’s lone double-double with 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while Monica Roeder added 11 points, eight of which came in the second half.

Sophomore Olivia Schretzman led Army’s rebounding effort with 11 boards as the Black Knights won the rebounding battle for the eighth time this season, 40-33, improving to 7-1 when doing so.

Game Notes: Army is 5-0 on the road for the first time since 1983-84 … the Black Knights improved to 6-8 against Manhattan, including 3-4 in games played in Riverdale … Army’s seven-game winning streak is its best since putting together an 11-game mark in Magarity’s first season (2006-07) … Army’s starting lineup remained unchanged for the eighth consecutive games as Kelsey Minato, Jen Hazlett, Anna Simmers, Olivia Schretzman and Aimee Oertner were the first five … the Black Knights are 17-5 (.773) when Dave Magarity has two freshmen in the starting lineup ... Rider is the first of three consecutive MAAC opponents for Army … the Black Knights are 36-37 all-time against current MAAC members.
