2 The Armenian Studies Program continues in its role as advisor
to the Armenian Students Organization, which provides students on
campus an avenue to become involved in organizing and presenting
activities relating to Armenia and the Armenians. Armenia Summer
Study Trip 2011 Prof. Barlow Der Mugrdechian led fourteen Fresno
State students on a study trip to Armenia, May 24-June 9, 2011.
They visited with students at Yerevan State University, visited
historic churches and sites, and participated in a variety of
courses. Society for Armenian Studies The Armenian Studies Program
continued its service as the secretariat for the Society for
Armenian Studies. The annual Journal for the Society for Armenian
Studies and the SAS Newsletter is published and distributed through
the Armenian Studies Program. The ASP manages the membership of the
Society and communications with members. Dr. La Porta is the editor
of the Journal of the Society for Armenian Studies and JSAS Vol. 20
was published in May of 2012. Armenian Studies Program 24th Annual
Banquet The Armenian Studies Program held its 24th Annual Banquet
on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at the Ft. Washington Golf and Country
Club. President Dr. John Welty and Dean Vida Samiian and other
faculty and administrators attended the Banquet, together with more
than 250 community members and students. Recognition and
certificates were given to more than 40 student scholarship
recipients and graduating students with a Minor in Armenian
Studies. Hye Sharzhoom, the student run newspaper and supplement of
The Collegian, completed its 33rd year of publication. Hye
Sharzhoom is mailed, free of charge, to more than 6,000 subscribers
worldwide, thus promoting the university and the Armenian Studies
Program, and attracting students to enroll at the university.
Barlow Der Mugrdechian of the Armenian Studies Program is the
long-time advisor of the newspaper. Engaging with the Region The
Armenian Studies Program is the center for Armenian related
education in the San Joaquin Valley. The Program has partnered with
the William Saroyan Society, the Armenian Library and Museum of
America, and with many local Armenian churches and organizations,
to present a variety of programs. Program direction: Prof. Barlow
Der Mugrdechian, Berberian Coordinator of the Armenian Studies
Program and Director for the Center for Armenian Studies. Faculty:
Dr. Sergio La Porta, Berberian Chair of Armenian Studies.
Instruction: Prof. Der Mugrdechian taught six courses in the Fall
of 2011 and Spring of 2012. He took 4 units of release time for
Program coordination and administration. Prof. La Porta taught six
courses in the Fall of 2011 and Spring of 2012 for a total of
twenty-four units. He taught one section of Humanities in the Fall
and one mega-section (300 students) of Humanities in the Spring. He
received three units of release time for scholarly activity.
