Yerevan is the capital and largest city of Armenia and one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. Situated along the Hrazdan River, Yerevan is the administrative, cultural, and industrial center of the country. It has been the capital since 1918, the thirteenth in the history of Armenia. Yerevan was named the 2012 World Book Capital by UNESCO. The railway operating environment in Armenia sharply deteriorated following the collapse of the Soviet Union. According to the World Bank, Armenian Railways was in dramatic need of major investment. Main Railway Station is a Neo-classical building, small scale version of Soviet skyscrapers such as Moscow State University or Warsaw Culture Palace, with a red-star-topped high spire serving as a symmetry axis.

The Railway Station building dominates the David of Sasoun Square which has the statue of David of Sasoun (hero of the Armenian epic tale) as a centerpiece.

The statue itself is worth seeing (some would claim more than the building): It is the masterpiece of Kotchar - the mastermind of Cubism driven Dimentionalism movement in Armenia - a very dynamic Equestrian statue. The metro stop 'Sasuntsi David' opens into the square. Unfortunately, the square, the building and the statue are in a measly condition now, as the blockade-driven underusage of the railway left the place unattended.

David of Sassoun is the main hero of Armenia's national epic Daredevils of Sassoun, who drove Arab invaders out of Armenia.

The creative work of the artist and sculpture Yervand Kochar /1899-1979/ is one of the most interesting phenomena in the XX century

In 1923-36, living in Paris, Yervand Kochar became a rightful member of artists' "Paris School", giving life to an art, which put his name among those great artists, who dictated the proceeding events in the European Avantgarde and World Fine Arts in the 20-30's of XX century.

In 1936 he repatriated to

Soviet Armenia, followed by prison

(between 1941 and 1943 Kochar was imprisoned

on politically motivated charges),

isolation...

Notwithstanding, the "Yerevan Period" of his work also had a great success, including such exemplary as the canvases as "The Eagle of Zvartnots", "Melancholy", "The Muse of Cybernetics", "Vardan Mamikonyan"

A museum dedicated to his art opened near Yerevan's Cascade in 1984. In 1999 UNESCO marked Kochar's centennial as one of the "outstanding dates" in world art
