Arlington High School Eagle Family Newsletter October 2019 at AHS ... October 4, 2019 Your Monthly Message from Principal Fish... It's Homecoming Weekend! Hello AHS Families, Homecoming is always a great week at AHS! We get to participate in parades, themed dress days, attend the big Friday football game and then there's a little Glitter and Gold at Saturday's Homecoming Dance (sponsored by DECA). There's a lot of positive campus culture happenings to help kids be involved and that's a wonderful thing. To ensure we keep growing and learning as a school community, we've decided to launch a Principal's Advisory Council for Diversity at AHS. For short, we'll refer to the new council simply as the "Diversity Council." We are so excited to begin working more closely with our students of color, students with disabilities, our LGBTQ+ students, and many other students with a passion for promoting diversity and supporting Every Eagle on our campus! The goal is to have a diverse group of students advising our administration and student leadership teams on how to best celebrate major cultural events like Hispanic Heritage Month, MLK Day, Black History Month, etc. in addition to simply helping us grow as a campus community in our compassion and acceptance for one another. Student voice is a great way to learn and grow together, and this council will provide a wonderful platform for increased student voice at AHS to help us achieve a fully inclusive culture that recognizes and celebrates our differences. Mostly, we believe it's important that every student enrolled at AHS feels as much a part of the fabric of our campus culture as anyone else. When we say Be Involved, Work Hard and Be Kind - we sincerely mean Be Kind to Every Kind. We really want people to know that we genuinely embrace our differences as we support and celebrate Every Eagle! If your student is interested in joining our Diversity Council, please have them see me, their counselor or their assistant principal directly for an application. In fact, your student may be approached by one of our team members to join the council and we hope to have a significant number of applicants by the Oct 15 deadline. Email me if you

    Important Information

NEW Cell Phone Expectations at AHS

Please take a moment to review the attached letter (C lickHere for Expectations) to learn more about our philosophyand approach to dealing with Cell Phone Use by Studentson our campus. These policy changes have been underreview and re-construction for the past two years. Werecently surveyed classroom teachers about the impact ofdistractions during instruction and more than 70 percentindicated cell phone use during class is a problem toofrequently. Effective Oct 1, students will be expected tosilence their phones and store them in their backpacks orin a classroom caddie system as directed by the classroomteacher. We are discouraging students from keepingphones on their person during instructional time to avoidthe distraction of text messages, social media and otherdistractions. Students can still use their cell phones for educational engagement under thedirection of their classroom teacher. Systems will vary based upon course content, grade leveland the established expectations of the classroom teacher. Consequences for not following thepolicy are clearly stated and will be shared with students prior to the Oct 1 effective date. Wewill meet with kids during an extended 5th period later this month to ensure we all understand. As noted in the letter linked above, we have a "Plan, not a Ban" at AHS. Some schools haveelected full bans on cell phones, but we do not believe this serves our students best in theirpreparation for life beyond AHS. Nearly 97% of our teachers believe we share a responsibilityas an educational institution to teach our kids proper cell phone use as they work toward careerreadiness. It's all about proper time, place and application. Thus, we will do all we can to helpthem mature, learn and grow into responsible, prepared adults. Lastly, we want to supportevery classroom environment by increasing student engagement, improving interpersonalcommunication and building more opportunity for distraction-free learning periods for our kids. Please support our efforts and review the policy expectations with your student. Thank you!

  • With the recent changes in requirements for student graduation pathways, wehave the opportunity to provide your student with an alternative assessment forgraduation. In 2019, Washington State Legislature passed House Bill (HB) 1599 toexpand the way that our high school kids can show their readiness for next stepsafter high school. This expansion came in the form of multiple pathways forstudents to build a High School and Beyond Plan that would fit each individualstudent.

On October 9, Arlington High School will be offering students the opportunity totake the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) Career Assessmenttest. A passing score on this test will fulfill the graduation requirement that waspreviously filled by achieving passing scores on the Smarter Balanced (SBAC)English Language Arts and Math exams. Student scores will only be reported to themilitary at student and parent discretion, they are NOT automatically reported. Ifyou are interested in more information, please reach out to your student'scounselor.

Career and College FairWe will be hosting our annual career and college fair December 5th 2019. Students will havefrom 7:30-10:30 AM to mingle through numerous college and career information tables in thecommons with representatives ready to answer any questions.
