July in Arlington is a big funfest, packed with events and festivals that showcase our wonderful town, and provide enter-tainment for residents and visitors.

Kicking off with our Hometown July 4th cel-ebration that opens in Haller Park with the fire-man’s breakfast–a per-fect start to a full day of activities while providing support to the Arlington Rural Fire Association.

After breakfast find that perfect treasure at the Kiwanis auction while they raise funds to sup-port scholarship pro-grams for high school seniors.

Then grab your spot on Olympic Avenue for the premier Arlington 4th of July parade, orga-nized by employees of Cascade Valley Hospital with plenty of hometown charm.

After the parade you will want to be at Haller Park

for the annual Rotary Duck Dash. This year’s event is raising funds to put in a spray park at Haller. Be sure to thank the ducks you will see throughout the day and consider supporting their efforts to finish the spray park.

As the sun starts to set

head over to the Arlington Boy’s & Girl’s Club for the fireworks display to end a perfect 4th of July cel-ebration.

The following weekend the Arlington Street Fair & the Arlington Fly-In take place.

A free shuttle between the downtown Street Fair and the Airport Fly-In makes it easy to attend both festivals.

The Fly-In opens on July 9 and the street fair on July 10, both running through the weekend.

We are so blessed to live and play in a town with great parks, trails and a walkable down-town core. Why not make a point of exploring all of the Arlington treasures this summer.

Pedal, paddle puff made

easier for allThis year’s Arlington Fourth of July cel-

ebration kicks off with the Pedal, Paddle, Puff Triathlon, with a start and finish at Haller Park.

“This year, the event is going to raise money to help build a ‘Splash Pad’ right here at Haller Park,” event organizer Devin Brossard said.

Brossard explained that the “Splash Pad” will be an automated water playground for all ages, similar to the Spray Park in Marysville.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 4, and the triathlon begins at 10 a.m.

Brossard acknowledged that the triathlon has typically been a smaller event, but he hopes to see that change.

“This year, we’re changing the race, so that anyone can participate,” Brossard said. “Usually, the paddle portion of the race is limited to those with kayaks and canoes. This year, anyone with a flotation device and a life jacket can participate.”

do a 2-mile run/walk out-and-back on the Centennial Trail, after which the bikes will be released, to ride 5.8 miles along State Route 530 to Jordan Road, before they meet the paddlers at Jim Creek. From there, competitors will hop onto their kayaks, canoes, SUP boards, inner-tubes or other flota-tion devices, and head six miles down the Stillaguamish River back to Haller Park. The total distance is 15.8 miles.

“It’s like a mini-triathlon,” Brossard said.

The race hosts five categories: Family, Local, Open, Iron Woman and Iron Man.

“The Iron Man and Iron Woman racers compete in all three legs,” Brossard said. “Those who register in the other categories compete as a team, and tap hands with other racers at each leg of the course.”

It is not necessary to preregister. However, registering before the day of the race will ensure that the participant gets a T-shirt. Rules, regulations and registration forms can be retrieved online at www.pedalpaddlepuff.com. The cost is $30 for individuals and $60 for teams, with a discount of $10 available at the website.

After its successful debut last year, the “Old-Fashioned Fourth” will be making its return to downtown Arlington on Saturday, July 4, albeit with a host of new features and activities.

Last year’s event saw the Arlington-Smokey Point Chamber of Commerce bring-ing in half a dozen food vendors to serve the public during a day when all of the restau-rants and other businesses along Olympic Avenue are closed.

This year’s “Old-Fashioned Fourth” will offer not only Kettle Korn, snow cones, ice cream, hot dogs, pizza and other carnival food, but also face-painting, a live brass quintet performance, a wading pool for mak-ing giant soap bubbles, and an assortment of games.

Legion Park will host the returning “Kids Carnival” from noon to 4 p.m., which should give those in the Kiddies Parade enough time to get started at 4:30 p.m.

Stacie Roark, managing director of the chamber, explained that the free games for children will include traditional activities such as knocking down pins with balls, ping-pong, ring-tossing and a bean-bag toss.

While T-shirts and baked goods will not be available, chamber members will be selling other Fourth of July-themed items, including pinwheels at the gazebo, where they’ll also be selling tickets for the bouncy house and pony rides. A rock climbing wall will also be available.

ARLINGTON — The Arlington Kiwanis Club Scholarship Auction returns to the Arlington Fly-In at Haller Park July 4.

The silent auctions start at 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., and the live auction starts at 10:30 a.m.

The boys and girls of Arlington will have an opportunity to upstage their elders this Fourth of July.

The Cascade Valley Hospital and Clinics will pres-ent the annual Independence Day Kiddies Parade for Arlington on Saturday, July 4, which gives kids 12 years and younger the chance to wave

to cheering crowds along Olympic Avenue for free.

Kiddies Parades in years past have attracted more than 100 young entrants each.

Although Jennifer Egger of Cascade Valley Hospital is still involved in coor-dinating both the Kiddies and Grand parades, she cred-ited students from

the National Honor Society at Arlington High School with stepping up to run the Kiddies Parade this year.

N o n e t h e l e s s , attendees and par-ticipants alike can expect all the same sign-up times and categories of entries as in previous years.

The three themes that have been fea-tured most often

are “Costumes,” “Patriotic” and “Wheels.” In years past, kids have dec-orated their bikes, donned creative cos-tumes, and marched or rode down the parade route.

Registration for the Kiddies Parade will take place at 3:30 p.m. at the Public Utility District build-ing, at 210 Division St. The parade

lines up and pro-ceeds southbound on Olympic Avenue, starting at 4:30 p.m., with just enough time for prizes to be awarded that the Grand Parade can follow at 5 p.m. As many as 50 volun-teers are anticipated to be on site to coor-dinate registration, judge entrants and supervise the order in which participants

will make their pro-cession through Arlington.

Event organizers expect this year’s I n d e p e n d e n c e Day Grand Parade should offer much the same eclec-tic collection of entrants, who are scheduled to begin their jaunt down Olympic Avenue beginning at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 4.

Cascade Valley Hospital has taken the lead in put-ting together both parades, and is excited that this year’s Grand Parade will again feature some of the event’s most reliable attend-ees.

“The Mission Pipe Band originally formed in 1962 as a Royal Canadian Legion band. Its connection with

As for the more than 100 other entrants that each year’s G r a n d Parade usu-ally attracts, L o g a n b e l i e v e s that the more creative entrants are more strongly and fondly remembered.

“The crowd loves a show,” Logan said. “They really appreci-

ate all the entries, but for the Fourth of July in Arlington, more is definitely more,” she laughed.

Logan noted that

the small-town feel for which Arlington is praised by a num-ber of residents and visitors alike is bal-anced by the diversi-

ty of partici-pants and attendees that events such as its Fourth of July p a r a d e s attract.

“You see a good mix of old f r i e n d s and new faces at the Grand P a r a d e , ” Logan said. “It’s always great fun.”

Longtime retired firefighters to be honored during paradeHarold Smith and

Doug Schmidt, the grand marshals of this year’s Fourth of July Grand Parade, began their fire service careers in Arlington in the 1970s.

They can remem-ber when the Cascade Valley Hospital handled emergency medi-cal service calls for almost all of North Snohomish County, before the growth of the county and the demands of their call volumes over-took the hospital’s ability to serve the area.

Smith and Schmidt spent most of their time in the Arlington Fire Department as volunteers, and became emergency medical technicians long before it was routine for firefight-ers to be dual-certi-fied as paramedics

as well.Schmidt credited

Smith with roping him and a number of other friends, family and neighbors into the fire service and EMS, to the point that the ambulances were run practically out of Smith’s house. “It was neighbors helping neighbors,” Schmidt said.

“The ones who didn’t already live in Arlington, I encour-aged to become part of the commu-nity,” Smith said. “We

have a great system now, but it didn’t happen overnight.”

Indeed, Smith and Schmidt were among the first to attend EMT class-es in Everett, back when they had a 30 percent failure rate.

“Not everybody can do it,” Schmidt said. “But when you see the difference that you can make, it really makes it feel worthwhile.”

“The longer I stuck with it, the more it grew on me,” Smith chuckled.

This move has proved prescient, as the fire department’s service priorities have changed to the point that both men joked that it could be called “the EMS department” instead.

Smith estimated that EMS accounts for 85 percent of the department’s calls, “with a little on

the fire side,” while Schmidt noted that the types of cutting-edge training that were available in the area, especial-ly in the late 1970s and early ‘80s, kept Arlington on the forefront of the EMT field. “We had fewer calls back in the day, but the ones we did get were major,” Smith said. “Our calls might not be as dramatic now, but we receive a much greater number of

them. The few fires we do get anymore are over-dramatized by the media, but we still get plenty of life-or-death calls, like heart attacks.”

Although the fire service and EMS became such a part of both men’s lives that many residents used to call Smith’s wife instead of 911, they agreed that the time was right for them to retire, in no small part because of their families. “I was always on call,” Smith said. “Our spouses put up with it, but after a while, it becomes your life. It gets harder and harder to retire,

because you come to depend on each other like family.”

“At the same time, you have to know when to say when,” Schmidt said. “It’s nice to know I won’t have to leave in the middle of dinner on Thanksgiving or Christmas anymore.”

Smith and Schmidt agreed they were honored to be named grand mar-shals.

“It feels kind of weird,” Schmidt chuckled.

“This is our town,” Smith said. “The people we served were our family and friends. We have a connection to them.”

The Rotary Club of Arlington is stocked and loaded with fireworks for the annual Independence Day Quake Field gala.

Entertainment Fireworks Inc. will be setting off $7,600 worth of pyrotechnics into the skies above the Arlington Boys & Girls Club on Saturday, July 4.

The bright lights and loud explosions are set to kick off at around 9 p.m. just after dark. The show normally lasts 20 min-utes, in front of a sizable crowd, so spectators are advised to

arrive early. “We usually get sev-eral hundred people parked in the lots and on the sides of the surrounding streets, so they can set up their chairs and watch,” club member Paul Ellis said.

The Arlington-Smokey Point Chamber of Commerce used to sponsor the event,

“The chamber wanted to focus on other priorities, and the fire-works show is a great way for Rotary to thank the community for supporting our Duck Dash,” Ellis said.

The annual Great Stilly Duck Dash is celebrating its 27th year with a splash.

Every year, the Rotary Club of Arlington raises funds through the Duck Dash to sup-port local causes, and this year $50,000 will go toward a “Splash Pad” automated water playground at Haller Park, which is estimated to cost up to $450,000.

The Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians has pledged match-ing funds for up to $50,000 of Duck Dash ticket sales to fund the Splash Pad, which is set to be completed in two multi-year phases, with the first phase aiming to break ground in July of 2016.

Rotary has set a goal of $102,000 for ticket sales, so that it

can continue to sup-port other communi-ty organizations and activities.

Last year, the Duck Dash raised “A Buck A Duck” to support Oso slide victims, totaling $16,432, while in 2013, Rotary raised

more than $150,000 to build the adven-ture playground at Haller Park.

Rotary regularly supports the Boys & Girls Club, Cocoon House, Kids’ Kloset, local food banks, the Boy Scouts and the Stillaguamish

Senior Center. It also provides $7,500 in scholarships to graduating seniors from the Arlington, Darrington and Lakewood high schools.

The Duck Dash began in 1987 to fund a community

youth center that would later hold the Arlington Boys & Girls Club.

Participants pur-chase tickets, and the ticket number corresponds with the number on a rubber duck that is launched into the

Stillaguamish River. The first ducks to arrive at the finish line at Haller Park are the winners, and those ducks are then matched to the ticket purchasers.

There will be 20 winners this year, half receiving $1,000 each and the other half receiving $100 each.

Tickets will be on sale in select local businesses and from Rotarians around town, leading up to and all day on the Fourth. Tickets are $5 each, or five tickets for $20, and will be sold until the Grand Parade starts on the Fourth of July in Arlington.

Arlington Fly-In offers historic displays, exciting air showsThis year’s

Arlington Fly-In returns with some exciting new aircraft from the Historic Flight Foundation as well as other activi-ties to be enjoyed July 9-11.

It all starts with Kid’s Day, Thursday, July 9, where flight simulators, face painting, helicopters and water bubbles can be enjoyed as well a “unique trav-eling exhibit on the Tuskegee Airmen,” Arlington Mayor Barbara Tolbert said. Kids under 16 can participate in the event for free.

Historic aircraft being displayed will include P-51 Mustangs used by the Tuskegee Airmen from World War II, which will fly daily, Tolbert said.

There will also be the showing of tanks by the Puget Sound Military Collectors’

Club.Up to four World

War II tanks will be giving demonstra-tions on Friday and Saturday at 1 p.m. They will also show-case vehicles, weap-ons and displays of antique military.

Kid’s day will remain open all three days from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the air-shows starting from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

“The air shows on Friday, July 11, and Saturday, July 12, will likewise be followed by vintage and warbird aircraft fly-bys, as well as military vehicle pass-and-review parades,” Tolbert said.

Friday, July 10, will start Vintage Day, which will show-case 1920 and 1930 aircraft, including “three-one-of-a-kind antique aircraft all on display together for

Music, food, vendors, kids events part of Arlington Street FairThe 25th annual

Arlington Street Fair returns to his-toric downtown on Olympic Avenue July 10-12 even “bigger and bet-ter,” event organizer Kathleen Shalan said.

Family fun can be had by listening to Music in Park, which will take place all three days with a variety of musicians and bands. Picnic tables and bleach-ers will be open at Legion Park for the event.

“More than one hundred local ven-dors will be set up on the street,” Shalan said. “This year there will be a lot of vintage furni-ture booths, which is all the rage — jewelry, homemade textiles, and pallet art, and many local artisans with a wide variety.”

Kids activities can

be found through-out the booths, Shalan added.

M e a n w h i l e , Friday, July 10, will start the Arlington Idol contest at Legion Park at 2 p.m.

“All ages can par-ticipate and there will be cash priz-es in different age groups,” Shalan said. Sign ups will be prior to the event.

The Arlington Arts Council will also do free face painting in front of City Hall.

Elephant ears, cotton candy and kettle corn are among the foods that will be sold dur-ing the street fair.
