Dear Friends,
I want to thank all of you for taking action when our community and our neighboring communities, in the Stilly Valley, suffered the tragic events of the 530 slide. I’m very proud of all the wonderful support, donations and vol-unteerism that helped during this time.
This feeling of community connec-tion will be renewed as we anticipate the celebrations and festivities that begin as summer comes to Arlington. I urge you to come out and attend or take part in the many events over the next few months.
In June the Show n Shine car show will return to downtown Arlington with the organizational efforts of the Downtown
Arlington Business Association. The Hometown Fourth of July featuring the pancake breakfast to support the Firefighters Association of District 21, the Kiwanis Auction to support scholar-ships for our graduating seniors. Always a favorite is the Fourth of July parade organized by employees of the Cascade Valley Hospital and ending with the Chamber of Commerce-sponsored fire-works show at the Boys n Girls Club.
As the events take place in Haller Park on the 4th, you will witness a com-munity park that is being transformed by the proceeds of the Rotary Club of Arlington’s annual Duck Dash. Not only do you get a chance to win some summer cash but your purchase is supporting
Rotary’s efforts to invest in our com-munity. Look for those life-sized ducks between now and the 4th and consider supporting this year’s projects.
After the 4th the fun keeps on rolling with the Arlington Street Fair and the Arlington Fly-In & Airshow. The Fly-In kicks off on July 10 with the traditional kid’s day and the Street Fair opens on July 11. Both events run into the weekend.
Don’t forget the music in the park and summer outdoor movies in the park. You can find the schedule on the city website or email us at [email protected]. I hope to see you out enjoying the community festivities this summer.

Willie Harper, Barbara Tolbert and Dennis Fenstermaker, along with Dan Rankin, Travis Hots and Bruce Stedman, will be grand marshals of this year’s parade.
The Fourth of July Grand Parade has had more than one grand marshal in years past.
Indeed, last year saw Arlington High School varsity basketball coaches Nick Brown and Joe Marsh named dual grand marshals for their teams making it to state that season.
But never before has Arlington had six grand marshals, which is how
many this year’s Grand Parade will feature.
“They’re a group of civil servants who showed both grace under pressure and inspiring leadership in their response to the landslide disaster in Oso on March 22,” said Heather Logan of Cascade Valley Hospital.
Arlington Mayor Barbara Tolbert and Darrington Mayor Dan Rankin both received plaudits for their
roles from Snohomish County Executive John Lovick and Gov. Jay Inslee. During his April 22 visit to Oso, President Obama expanded that praise to include Oso Fire Chief Willie Harper.
Arlington Rural Fire Chief Travis Hots updated the press on a daily basis, and sometimes more often than that, in the wake of the Oso slide. Along with Arlington Fire Chief Bruce Stedman
and Darrington Fire Chief Dennis Fenstermaker, they round out the half-dozen responders and officials who are being honored as grand marshals this year.
“It’s an unprecedented number of grand mar-shals,” Logan said. “But it’s a reminder that it takes many hands when disaster strikes, and that we all experienced the disaster, in various forms, together.”

The plastic ducks are taken out of the log boom catch area to see who the winners are.
Preparations for the annual Great Stilly Duck Dash are under way.
Even though the Rotary Club of Arlington is in its 26th year of running the Duck Dash, each year is slightly dif-ferent.
This year, in addition to funding their usual charitable activities, they are focusing on raising an additional $10,000 of their total commitment of $50,000 to the Arlington Boys & Girls Club construction fund. They are also going to give “A Buck Per Duck” to the people impacted by the Oso slide.
Participants purchase tick-ets, and the ticket number cor-responds with the number on one of the little rubber ducks that Rotary Club members launch into the Stillaguamish River from the Lincoln Bridge. The first ducks to arrive at the finish line at Haller Park are the winners, and those ducks are then matched to the ticket purchasers.
First prize this year is the Winner’s Choice of $5,000 or a seven-day cruise for two on Holland America Cruise Lines. Second prize is the choice of $2,000 or six nights on Kaanapali Beach on Maui,
plus $1,000 for travel expens-es. Third, fourth, and fifth prizes are $1,000 each.
Last year, approximately 18,000 tickets were sold. At “A Buck Per Duck,” that would be a donation of at least $18,000 to the victims of the Oso slide if that total was matched or exceeded this year. Duck Dash dollars also help fund the Kids’ Kloset, Boy Scouts, Open Door Theater, Youth Dynamics, Stillaguamish Senior Center, Food Bank and academic scholarships to local students.
The event kicks off at 7:30 p.m. on July 4 at Haller Park.

NOW CELEBRATING OUR 34TH YEAR!

Marching bands, football teams and dance squads have all participated in Arlington’s Fourth of July Grand Parade in years past.
Event organizers expect this year’s Independence Day Grand Parade should offer much the same eclectic collection of entrants, who are scheduled to begin their jaunt down Olympic Avenue beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 4. Cascade Valley Hospital has taken the lead in putting together both parades, and is excited that this year’s Grand Parade will again feature some of the event’s most reliable attendees.
“The Mission Pipe Band originally formed in 1962 as a Royal Canadian Legion band. Its connection with Arlington goes back to 1987, when it participated in its first Fourth of July parade right on Olympic Avenue. It hasn’t missed an event since,” said Heather Logan of Cascade Valley Hospital.
As for the more than 100 other entrants that each year’s Grand Parade usually attracts, Logan believes that the more cre-ative entrants are more strongly and fondly remembered.
“The crowd loves a show,” Logan said. “They really appreciate all the entries, but for the Fourth of July in Arlington, more is definitely more,” she laughed.
Logan noted that the small-town feel for
which Arlington is praised by a number of residents and visitors alike is balanced by the diversity of participants and attend-ees that events such as its Fourth of July parades attract.
“You see a good mix of old friends and new faces at the Grand Parade,” Logan said. “It’s always great fun.”
Registration for the Grand Parade runs from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at the Public Utility District building, at 210 Division St. Entrants cannot participate if they aren’t registered by 4:30 p.m. As many as 50 volunteers are anticipated to be on site to coordinate registration, judge entrants and supervise the order in which participants will make their procession through down-town Arlington.
Printable copies of registration forms can be downloaded off the Cascade Valley Hospital website at www.cascadevalley.org. Logan also recommends that prospective entrants call Jennifer Egger at 360-618-7848, or stop by the reception desk of Cascade Valley Hospital to register.
An entry fee of $100 will be charged for participation by any political entry or person running for office in the upcoming election, while a $25 fee will be charged for all commercial entries. All other entrants may register for free.
Arlington parade really is grand on July 4th
The boys and girls of Arlington will have yet another opportunity to upstage their elders this Fourth of July.
The Cascade Valley Hospital and Clinics will present the annual Independence Day Kiddies Parade for Arlington on Friday, July 4, which gives kids 12 years and younger the chance to wave to cheer-ing crowds along Olympic Avenue for free.
Kiddies Parades in years past have attracted more than 100 young entrants each.
Jennifer Egger of Cascade Valley Hospital is coor-dinating the lion’s share of both the Kiddies and Grand
parades again this year, and attendees and participants alike can expect all the same sign-up times and categories of entries as in the events’ previous years.
The three themes that have featured most often from year to year are “Costumes,” “Patriotic” and “Wheels.” In years past, kids have decorat-ed their bikes, donned cre-ative costumes, and marched or rode down the parade route.
Registration for the Kiddies Parade will take place at 3:30 p.m. at the Public Utility District build-ing, at 210 Division St. The parade lines up and proceeds southbound on Olympic
Avenue stating at 4:30 p.m., with just enough time for prizes to be awarded that the Grand Parade can follow starting at 5 p.m. As many as 50 volunteers are anticipated to be on site to coordinate registration, judge entrants and supervise the order in which participants will make their procession through downtown Arlington.
Printable copies of regis-tration forms can be down-loaded off the Cascade Valley Hospital website at www.cascadevalley.org/parade. Prospective entrants can also call Egger at 360-618-7848, or stop by the reception desk of Cascade Valley Hospital to register.

Children in the Arlington area have their chance to shine on the 4th of July also. They have their own parade, where they dress up in costume to celebrate Independence Day. The parents often march alongside to keep things in order.

The Arlington-Smokey Point Chamber of Commerce is stocked and loaded for its annual Independence Day fire-works gala.
The chamber will con-tinue its grand celebration this year with its return-ing partners, Entertainment Fireworks Inc., which will be setting off thousands of dollars worth of pyrotech-nics into the skies above the Arlington Boys & Girls Club on Thursday, July 4.
Chamber Vice President Julie Morse said the bright
lights and loud explosions will kick off at around 9 p.m. at Quake Field, just after dark. She estimates that it will last approximate-ly 20-30 minutes in front of what should be a sizable crowd.
“We usually get several hundred people parked in the lots and on the sides of the surrounding streets, so they can set up their chairs and watch,” Morse said. “It’s just a perfect way to end a fabulous day of Fourth of July activities.”
Morse has received feed-
back from a number of attendees of the Arlington fireworks show indicating that it’s one of their favor-ite Fourth of July fireworks displays of anywhere that they’ve attended.
“I’d heard from a lot of folks who like that it’s clos-er to where they live and easier to find parking than in Seattle or even Everett,” Morse said. “It’s the crown jewel in our day-long cele-bration of America. Nobody does America better than Arlington,” she laughed.

This year’s Arlington Fourth of July celebra-tion kicks off with a fun athletic event. Symmetry Chiropractic Wellness Center is hosting the Pedal, Paddle, Puff Triathlon, with a start and finish at Haller Park.
“This year the event is going to be raising funds to help those displaced by the Oso mudslide. Every dollar in registration fees is going to Habitat for Humanity, which is committed to building nine houses in Darrington for those who lost their homes,” event organizer Devin Brossard said.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. on July 4, and the tri-athlon begins at 10 a.m.
“This is a small triath-lon, and the majority of those participating are in it to have fun,” Brossard said. “On top of that, it’s part of the Arlington Fourth of July tradition. There’s a lot going on with the excite-ment of the Duck Dash, the parade, and you can even come down to Haller Park, eat a pancake breakfast, and cheer on whoever is racing.”
The bikers leave from Haller Park and ride 5.8 miles along State Route 530 to Jordan Road and the Jordan River Trail Park boat launch. From there, competitors hop into
their kayaks or canoes to row six miles down the Stillaguamish River back to Haller Park. After that, the runners take off to race for one mile down Centennial Trail and back to the finish line. The total distance is 15.8 miles.
“It’s like a mini-triathlon,” Brossard said.
The race hosts five cate-gories: Family, Local, Open, Iron Woman and Iron Man.
“The Iron Man and Iron Woman racers compete in all three legs,” Brossard said. Those who register in the other categories compete as a team and tap hands with other racers if they choose to compete in only one leg of the race.
It is not necessary to pre-register, however register-ing before the day of the race will ensure that the participant gets a T-shirt. Rules, regulations and registration forms can be retrieved online at www.pedalpaddlepuff.com.

The Arlington Fly-In returns this year with a three-day run July 10-12. “Kid’s Day” is opening day of Thursday, July 10, activi-ties begin at 9 a.m. and are set to include flight simula-tors, candy airplane making, face painting, helicopters, “Bubble Mania” and a dis-play by FIRST Robotics.
Priced perfectly for fami-ly fun, kids under 16 are free the entire event. The kids’ activity area will remain open all three days from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with air shows that will run at the Fly-In from 2-5 p.m. The air shows on Friday, July 11, and Saturday, July 12, will like-wise be followed by vintage and warbird aircraft fly-bys, as well as military vehicle pass-and-review parades. A new addition this year includes a vintage motor-cycle stunt team performing Friday evening after the air show.
As in previous years, the Arlington Airport’s 25-foot outdoor movie screen will play family rated movies from July 10-12, starting at dusk around 10 p.m. on July 10 with “Valiant,” followed by “High Road to China” on July 11 and “Gravity” on July 12, at roughly the same times.
The warbird area of the Fly-In will serve as the site of military history, with dis-plays of aircraft from the Historic Flight Foundation, as well as the P-47 cour-tesy of Paul Allen’s Flying Heritage Museum on July 12.
The Puget Sound Military Collector Clubs will show case vehicles, weapons and displays of antique military, including live tank dem-onstrations on July 11-12
before the daily air shows. On July 11, “Vintage Day”
will showcase 1920s and ‘30s era aircraft, including displays by North Cascades Vintage Aero Museum in the red barn, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Following the air show, Cherry Cherry, a Neil Diamond cover band, will perform prior to the “Hot Air Balloon Night Glow,” which is set to kick off at 9:30 p.m.
“That’s absolutely fan-tastic for the whole fam-ily,” said Janie Brown, who’s served as manager of air-craft registration for the Fly-In. “It’s really neat to watch them light up.”
Displays featuring planes, tractors and aircraft tend to be popular, and the aircraft judging awards will be pre-sented at 5:15 p.m. July 12 and followed by a live per-formance by the Mukilteo Outrageous Jazz Orchestra at 7 p.m. This year will fea-ture an aviation artist show with booths from selected area artists.
Shuttles will run between the Arlington Airport and
downtown Arlington from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on July 11-12.
Whether attendees arrive by land or by air, the Arlington Airport has set aside a camping area for campers and trailers, complete with showers and restrooms, so that they can simply stay on site from July 10 through their departures on July 12.

The Arlington Kiwanis Club is set to conduct its annual Fourth of July auction at Haller Park to support local high school students through Dollars for Scholars.
The event includes two silent auctions — one at 8:30 a.m. and another at 9:30 a.m. — as well as a live auction set for 10:30 a.m.
The Arlington Kiwanis Club added an early silent auction to the Arlington Fourth of July celebra-tion four years ago.
“The funds that we raise from this auction go to our Dollars for Scholars fund,” Kiwanis auc-tion chair Bob Nelson said. “We award three scholarships to gradu-ates at Arlington High School, and one scholarship to a graduate of Lakewood High School.”
Auction items include furniture, gift baskets, tickets, products and gift certificates from local business-es, and more.
“This year, we are having two
different sources of donations,” Nelson said. “Ordinarily, local busi-nesses donate something for us to auction off, but this year, we’ve sent out letters to businesses that don’t have products, like dentists or law offices, who are still interested in donating. So far, we have been very successful. The auction will include a whole myriad of different things.”
Each year, an American flag flies over the U.S. Capitol in honor of a local citizen, upon the request
of Arlington native and U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen, and each year, it is put up for bid at the Kiwanis auc-tions. The flag also comes with an authentication certificate, and the winning bidder chooses who it flies to honor.
Arlington Kiwanis auctions have been a part of the July 4 celebra-tions in Arlington for more than 15 years. They started across the street from the Arlington-Smokey Point Chamber of Commerce, the first
time that its offices were located near Legion Park.
Now, the venue is Haller Park, which is also the site of the Arlington Firefighter’s Association Pancake Breakfast, and the start of the Pedal, Paddle, Puff Triathlon. In one location, those interested in being fully immersed in Arlington’s Independence Day activities can eat a pancake breakfast, bid on a unique item and get a great work-out, all before noon.
Auction supports Dollars for ScholarsThe auction put on by the Kiwanis Club of Arlington raises scholarship money for local students. The auction consists of both live and silent events.

All types of food and merchandise can be found at street fair.
Live music, food, hand-made goods and family activities can all be found at the 24th annual Arlington Street Fair set for July 11-13 in downtown Arlington.
Kathleen Shalan of the Country Rose on Olympic Avenue is chairing the event for the first time this year.
“It’s going to be pretty much the same as last year,” said Shalan, who’s seen 80 vendors sign up so far, and noted that more can still
sign up before Friday, June 20. “There’ll be a lot of kids’ activities, and a few more food vendors than in the past. Our vendors are com-ing from the local area and the Pacific Northwest over-all, including Seattle.”
The parking lot next to La Playa Bonita on Olympic Avenue will serve not only as a food court for the three-day event, but also as a sound-system-equipped stage for the return of the
“Arlington Idol” contest on Friday, July 11.
“We’ll be giving out cash prizes to local people,” Shalan said. “It’s open to performers both young and old.”
On Saturday, July 12, the stage will host profes-sional country/western musicians Classic Roads from 1-3 p.m., and rock-and-roll artist Andrew B. Working from 4-7 p.m. On Sunday, July 13, Arlington’s
own cowboy crooner, Jesse Taylor, will take to the stage from 1-3 p.m.
“We’ve got folks making handcrafted goods, from candleholders to lamps,” Shalan said. “We’ve got jewelry vendors and one of those balls that you can go inside, to walk on a wad-ing pool of water. We’re even hoping to have our businesses along Olympic Avenue put booths out by their storefronts.”
Street Fair returns to downtown Arlington
To provide art opportunities for all ages, the Arlington Arts Council is presenting a variety of events around town each year. This year, the AAC’s “Youth Engaged in Art” committee again will present a plaza full of fun events during the merchants’ Arlington Street Fair.
Committee chairperson Andrea Govett is lining up face-painters and other artists to offer projects on the plaza at Arlington City Hall.
“We hope to have at least five tables going at all times,” committee member Virginia Hatch said.
Along with face painting, projects include Jim Creek clay, abstract expressionism, rock-painting and other fun activities.
“We had a lot of kids doing art at the Eagle Festival and hope to have another big crowd at the street fair,” AAC President Sarah Arney said.
Youth Engaged in Art at the Street Fair will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, July 11, and Saturday, July 12, but not on Sunday, July 13.
The art projects are offered by members
of the arts council, which pays for materials from funding from the community at the annual “Fall into Art” auction on the third Saturday of October.
“Each year at the auction, we ask for spe-cial funds to support art opportunities for youth. This is just one of the many projects funded by that,” Arney said.
Hatch said they welcome kids of all ages. This marks the seventh year for the AAC
to provide art activities for kids at the Street Fair. Two years ago, the number of activities were expanded to fill the plaza outside City Hall with tables and a variety of activities.
Besides the hands on painting and clay activities, a big emphasis this year is on pro-viding expanded hours of face painting. The tables are staffed by arts council members and supporters, who, according to Hatch, “expect to be quite busy and have as much fun as the kids.”
“We believe art is for everyone, and the Street Fair is another opportunity to make art accessible in a family friendly environment,” Govett said.
