Bobcat BitsHOT BAT FOR HILLTexas State fans are familiar with the power of Tanner Hill from seeing his home runs fly out of Bobcat Ballpark in 2014, his first year as a Bobcat. This year, especially as of late, the junior from San Marcos has found a way to hit for average as well. He leads the team with a .295 batting average and, in the last 10 games, Hill has been on fire. He is hitting .350, knocking a team-high five home runs in the stretch. He’s knocked a team-high 14 hits while adding a team-high 10 runs scored. He has 10 RBI in the last 10 games. He has added three walks and a hit by pitch for a .400 on-base percentage.
HOT IN THE LAST 10 GAMESTanner Hill isn’t the only Bobcat hot in the last 10 games. Cory Geisler and Hill each have 14 hits in the stretch while Granger Studdard has 13 hits, and David Paiz has 10. Three others have seven hits or more in the stretch. Studdard has knocked a team-high 13 RBI for a better than an RBI per game average while three others have five RBI or more in addition to Hill’s 10. Hill is slugging a team-high .800 in the stretch, and his 10 runs are bolstered by nine from Geisler and Studdard and eight more from Cedric Vallieres.
FRESHMAN MAKING AN IMPACTFreshman catcher Jared Huber has come on strong for the Bobcats in the last 19 games. The freshman from Spring, Texas, took over the catcher’s position in the April 2 game against Baylor and has held it ever since. In that span, he is hitting .303 and is third on the team in hits with 20 and in RBI with 14. Huber has knocked three doubles, scored seven times and, with his nine walks in the stretch, has an on-base percentage of .387. For the season, Huber is hitting .288 with 23 hits, 16 RBI and 11 runs. He has thrown out a team-high 17 base-runners.
TEDDY H SHOWING UP FOR SERIESIn the last three series Texas State has played, freshman Theodore Hoffman has shown up big at the plate for the Bobcats. After a tough start to his first collegiate season, he’s finding his stride. In the last nine conference games, Hoffman has gone 5-for-12 with three walks and a hit by pitch for a team-high .417 batting average and a .563 on-base percentage. Once on base, he has been dangerous, going 2-for-2 in steals. He has scored twice with three doubles and an RBI.
NEWCOMERS PLAY A ROLEThis season, Texas State welcomes 18 newcomers, many of which have had the opportunity to see playing time. In fact, 13 brand new Bobcats have started a game this season for Texas State. The group is led by senior transfer Cedric Vallieres, who has eight home runs and leads the squad in runs scored with 42. He has 43 starts with 40 hits, 42 runs, nine doubles, eight home runs and 29 RBI on the season. He leads the Sun Belt Conference in runs scored and is tied for seventh in the SBC in home runs.
Other newcomers with a start this season include redshirt freshman Zach Sullivan, freshmen Jaylen Hubbard, Jared Huber, Derek Scheible, Luke Sherley, Theodore Hoffman, Dylan Paul and Mickey Scott have started along with pitchers Montana Parsons, Pasquale Mazzoccoli, Joe Powell and Bryson Mitchell.

YOUTH IS A FACTOR FOR THE BOBCATSWhile some newcomers have transferred to Texas State, Bobcat freshmen have seen plenty of time this season, getting over 30 percent of the starts for position players. Jared Huber currently leads the way among Texas State freshmen in impact, but Luke Sherley has played in the most games among freshmen, starting 36 of 43 games played at shortstop. Other freshmen with double-digit starts this year include Derek Scheible and Theodore Hoffman.
QUIRKY HOMERS FOR TEXAS STATEOf Texas State’s 35 home runs this season, all but 12 of them have been solo homers, including 17 of the last 23 roundtrippers.
A STORY OF PERSEVERANCESenior righty Blake Whitter is making an impact for the Bobcats as a relief pitcher, something not many expected. The senior started at Texas State as a freshman back in 2011. After two years, he had yet to make an appearance for Texas State so he transferred to Blinn, where he lowered his arm slot to sidearm. After a season for Blinn, Whitter made the trip back to Texas State only to be one of the final cuts before the 2014 season.
The sidearm thrower has a 4.66 ERA and a team-high five saves in 36.2 innings of work. The senior has 28 strikeouts to just nine walks. He ranks fourth in the Sun Belt Conference in games finished and is tied for sixth in saves and tied for eighth in games in relief.
HOME RUNS FLYING OUT MORE IN 2015Texas State has already passed up the team’s 2014 total in home runs of 28. Tanner Hill hit the most recent one to put the Bobcats at 35 on the year with his seventh home run of the season and fifth in the last 10 games. Granger Studdard leads Texas State with 10 homers. Cedric Vallieres is second with eight, but Hill is coming on strong with his seven. Last year, no Bobcat had more than Studdard’s team-leading six. In all, eight Bobcats have sent out at least one roundtripper this season.
STUDDARD KEEPS WALKING OFFGranger Studdard stood out for his walk-off hits his freshman season, tallying three of them, one of which was a home run. This season, he owns both of Texas State’s walk-off hits. He hit a walk-off home run to beat Baylor, 9-8, completing a comeback from an 8-6 deficit. In the following midweek, the sophomore from Buda, Texas, knocked another one to beat Incarnate Word in the 11th inning.

TEXAS STATE BOBCAT BASEBALL2015 GAME NOTES
GIOVANONI PUTTING TOGETHER SOLID OUTINGSOne freshman arm that has done well lately for Texas State is Tyler Giovanoni. In the last 10 games, he leads the team in opposing batting average, hits and saves. He is second in appearances, earned run average, runs and earned runs. In his last 11 appearances, he only allowed six earned runs in 20.0 innings of relief for a 2.70 ERA. The freshman from Schertz struck out 17 batters to just eight walks in the stretch. Opponents are hitting just .250 against him in those appearances.
GRIST MAKES HIS RETURNAnother arm making an impact for Texas State is that of Scott Grist. His most impressive game this season came on the road at Baylor. The senior went all nine innings to register a complete-game shutout in a 2-0 victory for the Bobcats. He has one of the three complete games on Texas State’s pitching staff this year. The outing earned him the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week award as well as leading to recognition as the Sun Belt Player of the Week by CollegeSportsMadness.com, the only Player of the Week awards earned by Texas State this season.
The senior returned to the mound Saturday, Feb. 14, for his first time in the weekend rotation since his junior season after taking a seat for surgery last year. He returned on opening weekend after going 5-2 in 2013. In his first appearance in over a year, Grist went 7.2 innings with five strikeouts, one walk and gave up five hits and three earned runs. UC Davis only hit .192 against him as he finished the day with a 3.52 ERA.
Grist leads the team in opposing batting average, hits and walks allowed and is second on the squad in innings pitched, strikeouts and strikeouts looking. He is tied for fifth in the Sun Belt Conference in innings pitched.
STRONG SUMMERS FOR STUDDARD, OTHERSGranger Studdard burst onto the scene last season, leading the Bobcats in home runs with six and winning three games with walk-off hits for Texas State. After an All Star season for the Santa Barbara Foresters in the California Colliegiate League, Studdard is poised to be even better in 2015. Other Bobcats who put together strong seasons in the summer leagues throughout the country include Andrew Boes for the Neptune Beach Pearl in the California Collegiate League, Justin Dellinger for the Anchorage Glacier Pilots in the Alaska Baseball League, David Paiz for the Victoria Generals in the Texas Collegiate League and Tanner Hill, also for the Generals.
HEAVY HITTER IN MORE WAYS THAN ONESenior utility player Colby Targun is, without a doubt, a hitter. In addition to his baseball prowess, Targun is also a standout safety on Texas State’s football team. He finished the 2014 season playing in all 12 games. He had 70 total tackles, third on the team, and had three stops for losses. Targun added a sack and an interception he returned for 48 yards.
On the baseball diamond this season, he has made every hit count, tallying 23 RBI on 28 hits and scoring 15 runs. Last season, he had two home runs, finishing with 16 RBI, 40 hits, 11 extra-base hits and a .352 slugging percentage. He had a .317 on-base percentage and started 44 games of 51 games played, scoring 22 runs.
GOLDSCHMIDT’S JERSEY RETIREDFormer Texas State Bobcat and current MLB All Star Paul Goldschmidt saw his jersey retired at Texas State’s annual baseball Lead-Off Dinner and Texas State held a formal ceremony at Texas State’s upset of No. 3 Houston on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at Bobcat Ballpark. Goldschmidt is the first baseball player ever at Texas State to have his jersey retired and the fifth athlete across all sports at the university, joining men’s basketball players Vernon MacDonald, Jeff Foster and Lewis Gilcrease as well as women’s basketball player Linda Muelker. Goldschmidt currently plays for the Arizona Diamondbacks of Major League Baseball. In his young career, he already has two MLB All Star nods and won the Hank Aaron Award, a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger.
UPSET NO. 3 HOUSTONTexas State pulled off an impressive upset of No. 3 Houston on Wednesday, Feb. 25, beating the Cougars, 7-6. Cory Geisler dominated Houston through four innings, then senior Blake Whitter took over in the fifth. Whitter finished the game fanning three batters in the process as he stymied the Houston bats. At the plate and around the bases, the Bobcats were aggressive using a combination of hit-and-runs, sacrifice bunts, squeeze bunts and more. Texas State scored two runs in the third inning for an early lead on Houston, then pushed it to a 6-0 lead with four runs in the fourth. The Cougars stormed back in the fifth with five runs, but the Bobcats held them off with a run in the sixth and strong defense and pitching from Whitter to close out the game.
EARLY RESPECT FOR HUMPAL AND GEISLERIn addition to being tabbed second in the SBC, the Bobcats saw two players recognized on the 2015 Sun Belt Conference All-Preseason Team. Lucas Humpal was named the SBC Preseason Pitcher of the Year while Cory Geisler joined him on the preseason team at the utility position. Humpal was one of the top pitchers in the conference last season while Geisler was Texas State’s only All-Sun Belt First Team selection.

BY THE NUMBERS BOBCATS TABBED SECOND IN THE SUN BELT CONFERENCETexas State is already a team to be reckoned with according to a preseason poll of Sun Belt Conference coaches. Texas State was chosen to finish second in the Sun Belt behind defending champion UL Lafayette, even receiving a first place vote.
BREAKING TRADITIONSophomore Granger Studdard has made heavy contributions to the Bobcat squad since joining the team, but it wasn’t always so clear that he was going to play baseball. Studdard comes from a family of football players from the University of Texas. His father, two uncles, one of their uncles and his cousin Kasey Studdard all played football for the Longhorns. Kasey may be the most accomplished with a five-year career in the NFL for the Houston Texans. Granger, however, chose to break tradition to play baseball at Texas State.
FOUR BOBCATS DRAFTEDTexas State lost four players, including three underclassmen in last year’s MLB Draft. The top pick for the Bobcats was junior Austen Williams, going to the Oakland Athletics in the sixth round with the 184th overall selection to become highest Bobcat selected since Kyle Kubitza went in the third round in 2011.
On the draft’s final day, junior shortstop Garrett Mattlage, senior catcher Tyler Pearson and junior pitcher Taylor Black were selected by the Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs and Colorado Rockies respectively. Mattlage went in the 12th round while Pearson went in the 25th and Black was selected in teh 26th round.
The foursome became the 33rd, 34th, 35th and 36th Bobcats selected in the MLB Draft since Head Coach Ty Harrington took over the Texas State program in 2000. They are the 48th, 49th, 50th and 51st Bobcats ever to be selected.
GEISLER RETURNS AFTER ALL-CONFERENCE SEASONCory Geisler is one of four 2014 All-Sun Belt Conference selections from Texas State. He is the only one returning to the Bobcats in 2015 as the other three: Austen Williams, Garrett Mattlage and Taylor Black all chose to pursue professional careers after being drafted.
Geisler was one of just two utility players chosen for All-SBC after finishing the conference season hitting .326 with 30 hits, 10 RBI and a perfect 8-for-8 record on stolen bases to lead the team. He also put in time on the mound, finishing the year with a team-best 1.97 ERA and a 3-1 record. Opponents hit just .206 against him as he notched 22 strikeouts to 10 walks.
STRONG SCHEDULETexas State has played a tough schedule throughout the season with opponents that included a matchup against 2014 NCAA Tournament team Sam Houston State in the first midweek of the year. After that, the Bobcats traveled to Wichita State, then hosted Houston, ranked third nationally at the time. After Houston, the Bobcats hosted Central Michigan before starting conference play against UL Monroe then heading to Rice. Outside of Sun Belt opponents, the Bobcats have played UTSA, hosted Texas (ranked 10th at the time), swept Big 12 opponent Baylor, played at Texas and at No. 3 Texas A&M.

HEAD COACH16TH SEASONTEXAS, 1989527-404-1
TY HARRINGTON 5
Since taking over the baseball program in 2000, Head Coach Ty Harrington has built Texas State into an annual contender both regionally and on the national stage. The 2011 and 2009 Southland Conference Coach of the Year, Harrington has won at least 29 games while posting a winning record in conference play during each of his 15 seasons at the helm of the Bobcats. The winningest coach in Texas State baseball history, Harrington led the Bobcats to back-to-back-to-back Southland Conference championships (2009, 2010, 2011), three NCAA Regional Tournament appearances (2000, 2009, 2011) and a program record for most wins in a season in 2009 that the team again tied in 2011.
Entering his 16th season at Texas State, Harrington sports a 507-378 all-time record, including a 276-160 record during conference play. He has helped produce 74 all-conference selections, and 39 of Harrington’s players have been chosen in the Major League Baseball Draft, including four in 2014 headlined by pitcher Austen Williams in the sixth round.
In 2014, Harrington earned a milestone 500th victory against Baylor on April 24, 2014. The Bobcats had a good start to the season, winning nine of their first 11 games including a seven-game winning streak. In a double-elimination conference tournament, Texas State also challenged eventual champion UL Lafayette in a thrilling 4-3 game.
The Bobcats had a tough start to 2013, but Harrington pulled the team together to finish strong en route to a second place finish in the conference. In a rare occurence, the Bobcats won their final game of postseason play but due to an unusual round robin tournament in the Western Athletic Conference, Texas State’s season came to a close.
Harrington’s Bobcats did, however, beat regular season champion CSU Bakersfield along with tournament champion UTSA. The Bobcat pitching staff was so strong in 2013 that Texas State saw two contributors drafted in the Major League Baseball Draft. Starter Kyle Finnegan went in the sixth round to the Oakland Athletics while lefty reliever Donnie Hart went to the Baltimore Orioles in the 27th round after breaking a Texas State record for most appearances in a season with 41 and a team high 2.13 ERA. Hart did not give up a run until his 11th appearance and not an earned run until his 26th.
In 2012, The Bobcats began the season strong with a 14-6 record through the team’s first 20 games, the second best 20-game start to a season since Harrington took over in 2000. The start helped catapult Texas State up to No. 20 in the Baseball America rankings, the highest since the program began in 1985, and No. 30 in the Collegiate Baseball poll.
Partially responsible for the strong start was the Bobcat pitching staff, which set program records and made a run at a longtime NCAA record. Texas State hurlers did not allow a run over 57 2/3 consecutive innings, a streak spanning seven games from Feb. 25 to March 6. The Bobcats set the team record for scoreless innings and consecutive shutouts (5) and came up just 6 1/3 innings shy of the NCAA record of 64 consecutive scoreless innings set in 1972 by Arizona State. The streak a win against No. 18 TCU, a series sweep of Notre Dame and a victory over No. 4 Rice.
The Bobcats’ win over No. 4 Rice was one of six wins the team had against ranked opponents during the season. Texas State also defeated preseason No. 37-ranked Wichita State along with No. 18/No. 19 TCU twice and No. 16 Oregon twice.
Harrington led the Bobcats to a 41-23 record in 2011 as the team captured both Southland regular season and tournament crowns for the first time in program history. Harrington’s squad tied the
program record for wins in a season and qualified for the NCAA Regionals for the third time under his direction. Along the way, Harrington reached the 400-win mark with a 16-2 victory midway through the season against Northwestern State.
A Texas State-record five players were drafted from the Bobcats’ 2011 squad, including Kyle Kubitza who went to the Atlanta Braves in the third round, the third highest selection in Texas State history.
Harrington led the Bobcats to a 38-22 record and 23-10 mark in the SLC in 2010 as the team captured its second consecutive conference regular season title. Carson Smith was named the SLC Pitcher of the Year and Newcomer of the Year while being one of six Bobcats to earned all-Southland Conference accolades.
In 2009, Harrington led the Bobcats to a 41-17 overall season, marking the most wins in a single-season for the baseball program at that time. Texas State finished 21-7 against Southland Conference opponents, en route to their first-ever SLC regular season championship. Harrington garnered the 2009 SLC Coach of the Year honors after the successful run as Texas State received an at-large bid to the NCAA Regional Championship Tournament. The first-ever at-large bid for the baseball program, the Bobcats earned the No. 2 seed in the region to compete in Austin with Texas, Army and Boston College.
Harrington not only produced a successful team, but the success of his individual players was unprecedented in 2009 as well. Kane Holbrooks, Paul Goldschmidt and Tyler Sibley became the first-ever all-Americans for the Texas State baseball program. Holbrooks and Goldschmidt earned three all-America honors, while Sibley was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team. Seven Bobcats were named All-Southland Conference, as Goldschmidt was named Southland Conference Player of the Year, Hitter of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year. Holbrooks was named the SLC Pitcher of the Year and Keith Prestridge earned SLC Newcomer of the Year honors.
In 2007, Harrington coached his squad to a 37-23 record, a then-best mark of his career. Texas State opened the season with an 8-3 win over Oklahoma

and returned to Bobcat Field for a 3-2 upset of No. 1 Rice in front of a record crowd.
In 2006, Texas State defeated three teams that made appearances in the 2005 College World Series (Texas, Nebraska and Baylor), and Texas State’s final victory of the season over Lamar marked Harrington’s 200th win of his career. The win made Harrington one of just two coaches with 200-or-more wins as the Bobcats’ skipper. Harrington reached the milestone in his sixth season, one year sooner than former Texas State head coach Steve Prentice who earned his 200th victory in the fifth game of his seventh season as Bobcats’ coach.
In 2004, Texas State defeated No. 16 Texas A&M during the regular season and played 14 games against ranked opponents, finishing with a 32-26 overall mark and a 16-10 record in the Southland Conference.
The 2003 campaign was a successful one, as the Bobcats finished second overall in the league standings, just one game behind regular season champion Lamar. Texas State posted a 30-28 overall record and a 19-7 Southland Conference mark as the team earned wins over defending national champion Texas and preseason top-25 selection, Baylor.
In 2002, Harrington led the Bobcats to a 36-24 record, the second most wins at the time posted in a season by a Texas State baseball team in 17 years. His club collected 10 wins against nationally-ranked teams, including a 2-0 shutout in Austin against the eventual national champion Texas Longhorns.
Prior to taking command of Texas State’s baseball program, Harrington served as the head coach at Blinn Junior College in Brenham, Texas in 1999. In his one season with the Buccaneers, Harrington guided them to a 36-22 record and advanced to the Region XIV NJCAA Championship. From 1995-98, Harrington served as the head coach at Northeast Texas Community College in Mount Pleasant, Texas.
In his first season, the Eagles finished with a 37-12 record, and in 1996, Harrington led the team to a 48-18 overall record while capturing the NJCAA National Championship. Along with the championship title, Harrington received NJCAA Coach of the Year honors.
In his four years at the helm of the Northeast Texas CC program, Harrington recorded a .705 winning percentage, winning 165 of 234 games. While at NTCC, Harrington also assisted in the development of an academic accountability system that resulted in a team grade point average higher than 3.00 for three consecutive years.
Harrington began his coaching career at the University of Texas, where he served as a student coach and graduate assistant coach from 1988-1991. He
then moved to Jonesboro, Arkansas as an assistant coach at Arkansas State. Harrington helped the Indians establish several school records, including most wins in a single season. In 1994, Arkansas State won the Sun Belt Conference Championship and made an appearance in the NCAA Regional Tournament.
During his playing days, Harrington was a two-year letterman at the University of Texas where he played in the Longhorn infield under collegiate coaching legend Cliff Gustafson. Harrington was a member of Texas teams that advanced to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska in 1984, 1985 and 1987. He also served as team captain on the 1987 Longhorn squad.
Harrington is married to the former Leila Baggett. The couple resides in San Marcos with their three daughters: Melaine, Emma and Alle.
