Types of Words in Arabic

There are 3 types of words in the Arabic language:

1. Ism ( م س ا )

2. Fi’l ( ل ع ف )

3. Harf ( ف ر ح )

1. Ism ( م (ا س

Definition of an Ism

An ism is the name of a person, place, animal, thing, description or idea.

How to recognize an Ism

1. The Ism can end with a kasrah:

/اسم اسم

2. The Ism can end with a tanween:

/امسا /اسم اسم

3. The Ism can have the word yaa (يا أيها/يا) before it:

الكاف رونأيهاياقل Say O disbelievers

4. The Ism can have alif and laam (ال) at the beginning of it:

الب اهلل م نأعوذ يم الشيطان رج I seek refuge in Allah from the rejected Shaitan

2. Fi’l ( ف ع ل)

Definition of a Fi’l

A doing word. This could be past tense, present tense or future tense.

How to recognize a Fi’l

1. The fi’l which is past tense can end with an open ت:

راطالذ ينأن عم عليه متص The path of those upon whom You have bestowed your favour

2. The fi’l which is present tense can have ل م before it:

يولدليل دول He is not born and He does not give birth

3. The fi’l which is present tense can start with a:

a. Hamza (أ) b. Thaa (ت) c. Noon (ن) d. Yaa (ي)

4. The fi’l which is future tense can start with س or have the word

.before it س و ف

Definition of a Harf

Small words that don’t make sense on their own.

Examples:

1. The letter ب (with, in, for)

2. The word م ن (from)

3. The letter ل (to)
