‘What The Truck To Do?’Trucks are becoming a problem in Arjeplog. And nobody knows what to do about it.

In recent years more and more trucks arrive in Arjeplog loaded with test cars as well as other cargo.

Nowadays, instead of leaving straight away many stay a few days while waiting for a return load. In order to do that, the truckers need somewhere to stay, preferably in the centre of town and most certainly without any costs, they say.

Some companies pay for their truck drivers to stay at Kraja or Lyktan and these pose no problems.

Others, looking for a cheap solu-tion, park in public parking lots in the market square and recently even in the school parking lot. Many locals are irritated when they see a trucker camping in the parking lot, as they take a lot of space and prevent others from parking there. Some drivers also leave their trucks running for a long time, polluting the air.

The politicians in Arjeplog are aware of the problem, but they have no solution that is good for the truckers.

The only suggestion they have is to ban trucks and buses from stopping in the market square, which in fact will only lead to more problems.

There are private companies that are willing to make a parking area for the trucks but of course, they want the truck drivers to pay. Up until now these companies have been told that the truckers are not prepared to pay anything.

The truckers want to be near the town in order to be able to shop and

eat. The only available space is where the old OK/Q8 used to be, near the sports centre and the schools. The problem with this place is that the authorities are still fighting about who is responsible for cleaning up after years of oil spill.

One idea is to use the empty plot opposite to the place where BOSCH used to have their offices. This is situated in the industrial area some four kilometres from town. Another is a strip along the Silver Road.

Some companies argue that it is up to the Kommun to fix something for the truckers while others say it is the responsibility of the car testing companies.

If you have any ideas how to solve this problem, please contact us and we will be happy to forward them to the proper authorities.

This & That...• A man from the north wrote to the government suggesting that they introduce a new law that all reindeer owners should put reflector bands around the necks of their reindeer.

He thinks that this would decrease the number of traffic accidents involv-ing reindeer. He wrote that in 2007 there were 966 traffic accidents in the province of Norrbotten involving reindeer.

Reindeer owners get financial compensation from the government when an animal is killed in traffic and this man therefore suggests that the owners who do not put reflectors on their animals should not get compen-sation.

Valentine’s Day & Chinese New Year

In central Arjeplog at Storgatan nr 12, there are 3 fully-equipped apartments for rent at Pensionat Fjellström. They are comfortable and cosy, one and two bedrooms. A home away from home! Breakfast is available. Info: Tel 0961-61688 or [email protected].

Home away from home

On Sunday February 14th, it is Valentine’s Day. While sending cards, flowers, chocolates and other gifts is traditional in the UK, Valentine’s Day has various regional customs in the many different countries of the world.

For the Chinese, the first day of the lunar New Year 2010 falls on the 14th day of February and is the start of the Golden Tiger Year. The Tiger is the third sign in the cycle of Chinese Zodiac, which consists of 12 animal signs.

On New Year’s day itself, it is beneficial to celebrate, to be happy, to have smiling faces, and to refrain from scowling, quarreling, or criticizing anyone.

In Sweden, Valentine’s Day is called Alla hjärtans dag (“All Hearts’ Day”)

and was launched in the 1960s by the flower industry’s commercial interests, and due to the influence of American culture.

It is not an official holiday, but its celebration is recognized and sales of cosmetics and flowers for this holiday are only exceeded by those for Mother’s Day.

Many of the shops here have special offers on this day for flowers, presents, chocolates and even red nail polish (at Nina’s).

You can send flowers all over the world from Blomhörnet, the florist shop in Arjeplog. Why not surprise a loved one back home with flowers?

Some of the restaurants will be serving a special fixed dinner for this evening, book a table.

Restaurants Compete for CustomersThe number of restaurants in Arjeplog has increased to a large extent and such competition is always good for the customers.

The quality of the food, the price, the service and the atmos-phere have to be very good in order to attract guests.

There are now four restaurants within 50 metres of one another in the centre of town: Pizzeria Verona, Mathörnan and the new Frasses and Harry’s that will open on Monday.

Then there is Hornavan Hotell within walking distance from the town, Kraja on a peninsula just outside of the town and Hotell Silverhatten on the hill of Öberget.

Besides these restaurants there are also a few outside the town (but still within the municipal area of Arjeplog) and even at the petrol stations you can get fast food.

That’s not bad for a town of 1800 people and we can thank the car testing industry for the high level of service. Some of the restaurants do close after the car testers leave in April but hopefully many of the restaurants and pubs will remain open as they are aiming at all-year-round service.

Eighty five kilometres away, in Arvidsjaur, you can eat and drink at Hotell Laponia and Afrodite, among other places.Read all about the restaurants in Arjeplog on pages 3 and 6 and details on page 8.

• Four years ago Klaus from Opel helped a man who got stuck with his car in the snow bank on the side of the road. This man was car photographer Roberth Sandseth from Norway.

A few weeks ago, Robert saw a car that was stuck on the side of the road and stopped to help him. The man in the car was Klaus from Opel.

Klaus looked twice and said, “Weren’t you the one I helped out of the snow bank some years ago?”

It’s a small world.

• Did you know that there is about 50 minutes more daylight each week?

Reflectors on reindeer? Would that result in less traffic accidents?

Age: 35.

Family: My wife and 2 girls, 1 and 3 years old.

Home: Melbourne, Australia.

Company: BOSCH.

Occupation:Applications Manager.

Favourite food: Barbecues. Also home-cooked food with fresh ingredients. In Arjeplog I like the salmon and meatballs.

Dream car: Mercedes Gullwing, the old classic model. Silver in colour.

Candid interview with a car tester

Spare time activities: Spending time with family and friends. Gardening, camping, 4-wheel driving in the bush, water-skiing and swimming. In Arjeplog, I go cross country skiing and some-times downhill skiing.

What is good in Arjeplog? The people are friendly. It is a central meeting place here and it’s good to catch up with friends and colleagues from Germany and other places. You see things that you don’t see at home, such as the Northern Lights.

What is bad in Arjeplog? Its a long way away from the family for en extended period of time. The travelling, especially the last 20 hours of transit is awful. The different time zone (to Australia) makes communi-cation hard.

Music you enjoy?A variety of music. Rock from 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.

What is important in life? For me and my family to be happy and healthy. Watching my girls growing up, learning and developing. Also, solving problems by imple-menting clever solutions makes me happy, both at work and at home.

Mark Anderson, Bosch, Australia

Mathörnan: Oriental décor and tasty food Last week we wrote about palt and bloodpalt which are served every Wednesday for lunch at Mathörnan. They also offer an alternative on Wednesdays for those who do not like this special dish from the north.

In the evenings, however, Mat-hörnan offers gourmet dishes as well as hamburgers and pizzas. The à la carte restaurant at the back has been re-decorated in an oriental theme and is now a cosy and warm place to have a meal.

Pub Källan in the basement is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays and attracts locals and car testers.

Kraja has undergone a change from a disco/party restaurant (do you remember Friday night discos at Kraja?) to a first-class gourmet restaurant complete with a cosy lounge with an open fire-place and

comfortable leather armchairs. The restaurant at Kraja offers a

new and rustic à la carte meny in the evenings as well as ‘After work’ buffets on Fridays with two sittings.

You can relax in the lounge at Kraja

Relax after a good meal at Kraja

Best views from SilverhattenThe lunch of the day is available at Kraja and at Silverhatten Hotell, which has the best scenery of all, on the mountain of Öberget.

At Hatten they also serve à la carte in the restaurant and the classic planked steak on Thursdays.

On Saturday February 27, Silver-hatten turns 40 and there will be loads of activities in the day and in the evening. More about that in two weeks’ time.

On Arjeplogs Kommun’s coat of arms there are three lines,

a reindeer antler and a silver crescent. It is dark green and the details are in silver.

The three lines symbolise the three rivers flowing through the municipality. Far north, we have

the Pite River, which is not exploited so much for hydro-electric power and there is good fishing in many places along this river. The Skellefte River runs through the town of Arjeplog. In the 60’s, the river was dammed and there are large reservoirs here of which Hornavan, Sweden’s deepest lake, is one. The water then flows down via the river and passes through several power plants providing electricity. The third river is the Lais River in the southern part of the municipality.

The Lais River is linked with the Vindel River, which is one of the last protected rivers, which

means that it cannot be developed for hydroelectric power. Under the Lais River there are large, water-filled cavities since the mining in Laisvall. The Laisvall mine was once Europe’s largest lead-mine but today there is virtually nothing left.

The reindeer antler symbolises reindeer and the reindeer herding of the Saami people here. The

original Arjeplog families became mixed with families from other places, such as Karesuando in the north, after the Swedish government in the early 1900’s forced the Saami people to move here with their reindeer.

The silver crescent and the colour silver symbolise the old silver mine at the Nasafjäll (mountain).

Silver was found there during the 30-year-war and the Swedish State thought that they had found a great fortune. Nasafjäll was mined during two separate periods in the 1600’s and again in 1700’s. Majorsgården in Adolfström is a monument to this era and the many human tragedies in the cold and harsh climate.

The green colour symbolises the forest. During the 1950’s there were about 1000 people

employed in forestry here but since the industry has

Britta Flinkfeldt Jansson, Mayor.

been made more efficient, only a handful of people now live off the forest. However, many local people still own forest in the municipal area of Arjeplog. Have a good week!

Meet Alexander Söderström, Hotell Lyktan– this week’s local Name: Alexander Söderström

Age: 21

Married: No. I have a girlfriend, Hanna.

Home: Arjeplog now, but I come from Norr-köping (near Stockholm). I studied at the BST program here, met a girl, bought a snow-mobile and stayed.

Occupation: I am a cleaner at Hotell Lyktan. I am also a part-time fireman. I took part in cleaning up after the fire in Racksund on Tuesday night. A tough job, especially when it was so cold.

Alexander Söderström, Hotell Lyktan

Favourite food: Souvas which is smoked fillet of reindeer.

A holiday cottage and shed in Racksund west of Arjeplog burned down to the ground late Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning this week. Åse Sund-ström managed to save herself but not much else.

Just before midnight on Tuesday night Åse Sundström had just fallen asleep in the cottage that belongs to her parents Alf and Bente Sundström from Cartest.

She woke up when she heard the crackling noise of the fire which she thought was the snow falling from the roof. When she turned on the

Cottage Completely Destroyed by Firelight, she saw the flames and the smoke seeping into the room.

She grabbed a dressing gown and some boots and ran out. She forgot her cell-phone, so she ran back in to fetch it and saw that the roof was about to cave in.

She alerted the fire brigade and phoned her sister Anna who was in a cottage nearby. Four minutes later, there was a raging fire where she had been sleeping.

Åse has three children who were staying at their father’s place that night. She says that it was lucky that they were not with her then, as she doesn’t know if she would have been

able to get them all out in time.

Everything in the cottage was destroyed in the fire. All the memories from Alf ’s parents who had lived there as well as Åse’s

Dream car: BMW M3. Red in colour.

Present car: An old Volvo 740.

Spare-time activities: Snow-mobiling in winter and fishing in summer.

What’s good in ArjeplogWinters here are really nice. Arjeplog is not so big and it is close to Nature.

What’s bad in Arjeplog? Nothing is bad.

What’s important in life? Family and friends.

and her childrens’ clothes and things. They were staying in the cottage while they rent out their house in Arjeplog to car testers.

The old barn that Alf ’s grandfather had built and which had later been re-built into a bathroom, sauna and store-room, also burned up. Alf was very pleased that Ase managed to get out alive but was totally distressed when he saw the devastation.

He said, “It is impossible to describe in words what I feel. If you have seen your possessions go up in flames, you might understand what I am experiencing. Everything is gone, all the memories from my mother, everything.”

Åse Sundström got out in time and was saved from the fire.

New Chef and Good Team at Hornavan

Frasses & Harry’s open at last! The talk of the town this week is, of course, the opening of the restaurants Frasses and Harry’s.

Ever since Frasses burnt down almost a year ago there have been speculations and rumours about what would arise from the ashes. It has taken a long time and changed hands and ownership but now, finally, on Monday, the new Frasses and Harry’s will be opened. Frasses will continue, as before, with local dishes for lunch and fast food, hamburgers etc, the rest of the time. Björg Karlman, the previous owner of Frasses, has promised to help keep the same level of lunches as before.

One new feature is that they will stay open late at night on Fridays and Saturdays, so that you can get a hamburger after the dances and discos in town. Harry’s is a franchise chain of restaurants/pubs with over 30 places in Sweden (also in Norway and Thai-land). Each Harry’s is unique but the concept is to offer good service, a wide selection of food and drinks at reason-able prices and a cosy atmosphere. Thair Abid Ali who owns both rest-aurants used to own Pizzeria Verona a few years ago. He left Arjeplog then but is now back in full force.

Sports on Big Screen and Pizza at Verona

Pizzeria Verona have invested in two large big screen TVs and offer all the paid TV sports channels. Here you can watch your favourite football- or ice-hockey teams as well as golf and other sports. The football includes Premier League, La Liga, Champions league, UEFA, Italian and more. At the same time you can enjoy a pizza or order something from their à la carte menu. And have a beer or a drink. Verona also offers lunch of the day and take aways.

Hornavan Hotell opened exactly one year ago. They now have a new chef in the kitchen, Mats Danielsson, aka ‘Lillen’, who used to work at Hotell Nausta in Slagnäs.

The lunches are good and there is now a large selection of salads that are displayed by the new counter that was re-built before the new winter season began.

The view over Lake Hornavan is wonderful and offers visitors a glimpse of the snow-covered wide open spaces. Ann-Christin and Petter Sundström,

who own and run Hornavan are very pleased that the hotel is running smoothly and that they have many guests.

“We have a wonderful team of employees”, says Petter, “they are all locals which we think is extremely important”.

Hornavan Hotell has become a ‘party hotel’ especially on Saturday evenings and many locals come to the pub and discos that they arrange. This Saturday there is a pub evening for people over 40 years of age.

A crystal chandelier and a buffalo head make up part of the decoration at the new steakhouse/restaurant/pub in town called Harry’s.

The view from the restaurant at Hornavan Hotel. You can see the snow-covered lake, Galtispouda Mountain and the wide open spaces.
