New Team Playing on Normal Ice Tracks

Conditions for the track makers are not always so easy. Here a snow-blower is clearing the ice on Lake Uddjaur and visibility is near zero.

Car testers and the weather are the two things on all the track makers minds at the moment. The companies testing in Arjeplog want the ice tracks to be ready yesterday, but in reality, the climate does not always help them.

Alf Sundström from Cartest says that the conditions for making the ice tracks are normal, they are not fantastic but they are not the worst either. All their tracks are open but they still cannot use the really heavy equipment and that is a bit frustrating.

Alf says he is very happy that his cli-ents have come earlier than usual, but on the other hand it is more stressful.

Icemakers, Colmis and SIS Sweden report basically the same thing about the lake tracks. They have all opened most of the tracks, except the ones for heavy vehicles.

For BOSCH at Vaitoudden things are different this season and more interesting. The company SIS Sweden, are taking care of their facilities and making and maintaining the tracks. Jakob Hellkvist who is responsible for the tracks and buildings at Vaitoudden

says, “Knock on wood but so far we are doing very well”. He says that of course they have the same problems as everyone else in the business, with occasional warm weather (blida) and snow that keeps coming at the wrong time.

Site manager Kenneth Wallbom told us that all their lake tracks are in good working condition and that everything is going well for SIS.

He explained that both he and Jakob Hellkvist have been involved in car testing for many years.

Kenneth started working with Jörgen Stenberg in 1998 and has been follow-ing him around the world, so he is not new to this business.

The new season begins with conditions that are normal and there is a new team playing on the ice.

Jakob Hellkvist is the manager of the tracks and build-ings at SiS Sweden.

Both Wallbom and Hellkvist come from Småland in the south of Sweden and have been friends since their school days. Both say that they really like what they have seen so far of Arjeplog and Kenneth has moved here on a permanent basis.

Kenneth Wall-bom, SIS, is the site manager of Vaitoudden for BOSCH. SIS Sweden replaces ATM who looked after BOSCH for the past ten years.

Sunrise: 9.58Sunset: 13.51Length of day: 3 hours 53 minutes

Each time we welcome a new year it feels great. Especially at my age, perhaps. When you’re old enough to know a little about life but still young

enough to be able to do all the things that you want to do. When you are old enough to not care about people around you having other opinions. When you see your children growing up and doing well. And to be happy.

The world is changing and our view of the world also changes. We travel more and we are moving around across the world in a completely different pattern

to 25 years ago. My children speak better English at the age of 12 and 13 than I did when I was 20. They hang out with friends they meet online and they find it easy to talk to them and to make new contacts. Sometimes, this is not good at all. Not everyone that is hidden behind an anonymous screen is nice. But many times they develop fine relation-ships, giving them opportunities to meet in many places of the world, to share experiences and to be together.

Sweden is and will remain an open country. Today we have both the space and the capability to be a safe haven for people in need and to accommodate those

who need help. From ancient times we have been welcoming people from other cultures to Arjeplog. You can see traces of this at the Silver Museum where the findings are displayed, findings that were often dug up in unexpected places in our kommun (municipality).

That could be the reason why we are so happy to welcome you who come to work here for a season or two or more. Or maybe it is because we are

genuinely curious about you. We want to know more about you and your family, about what made you take the path you took, what you see that you think is good here and with the locals. As well as what could be improved. I am afraid that we are a municipality with too little money, so we can never meet all your requirements. But we can continue to evolve, to be an even more welcoming place.

Each autumn and every new year gives us a chance for a new start. Each time the winter test season kicks off also gives us the opportunity to welcome our old

friends back and to greet new friends, which we are very happy to do. Welcome!
