THE WALL & MARRONEY'S MINIONSIn the Marroney Theatre, on the upstage right brick wall, there are names written in black with dates ranging from 1936 to 1988. The names from 1936 to 1956 are on cement and the names from 1958 to 1988 are printed on the bricks. "The Wall" represents some of the best undergradu-ate theatre students. In those days, each student had to take all of the courses in the depart-ment - no matter what their study emphasis was in theatre. Actors, directors and playwrights had to take design, stagecraft and all technical theatre classes, while technicians and designers had to take acting, directing and playwriting classes.

On the last day of spring classes, everyone gathered on the stage and Peter Marroney announced who was going to be able to write their names on the wall. With paint brush in mouth, the student would climb a 25-foot ladder to paint his or her name onto the wall and make history. From 1936 to 1956, the names on the concrete were done at Herring Hall, which was the theatre and equestrian livestock arena. When the "new" theatre was constructed in 1956, the concrete block was cut out and transferred to continue the tradition.

To be selected for the wall meant that a stu-dent completed four out of five criteria: had a significant role in a main stage or Lyceum production, designed a major production via lighting, costumes, or scenery; wrote a play, directed a departmental production, and/or performed stage management.

You might recognize some of the names from theatre, film or television. There's even a former UA Homecoming Queen!

MARRONEY'S MINIONS - REPRESENTING DRAMA MAJORS 1960 - 1985

The year 1939 was a significant one for the UA Drama Department . It was then that Peter R. Marroney was hired as the Technical Director in the department. Two years later, he became the head of the department, a position he held for 42 years.

Peter Marroney was "Mr. Theatre." In fact, it was said that if you wished to read a play in your own home, you had to get Peter's permission. He was instrumental in getting the UA to move the Theatre program out of Herring Hall, the equestrian livestock arena, to the new theatre in 1956. Each theatre season, Peter directed four of the six productions; including one Shake-speare, plus a large-scale musical in Centennial Hall. Being part of a Marroney show was an honor, a thrill, a pain...but always interesting and exciting.

Five years ago, four drama alumni formed the "Marroney's Minions" in order to find other alumni from the years 1960 - 1985. The group has grown quickly to 160 today. Marroney's Min-ions are - or were (retired) - theatre, film or television professionals all over our nation.

The second reunion of the Marroney's Minions is taking place during April 22-24, 2016. They are proud of being instrumental in shaping the UA Theatre program into what it is today. All Marroney's Minions have a bond that was formed by being under the tutelage and always watchful eye of Peter R. Marroney.

DRAMATURG’S NOTES

1996 was the first time in 15 years the number of AIDS deaths began to decline. This was also the year Rent first opened in New York City. The show’s creator, the late Jonathan Larson, was deeply impacted by watching his friends suffer from HIV/AIDS and their lives were one source of inspiration for Rent.

HIV/AIDS devastates the immune system; eventually the body cannot fight off infections, which means the body becomes completely vulnerable to the most basic illnesses. The disease proved highly fatal and early medications made to treat HIV/AIDS, such as AZT, often did more harm than good. Because of this, those diagnosed early on were often ostracized out of fear of infection. Societal attitudes were indifferent - if not hostile - to those who were diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. Eventually, improved medications were created, which have prolonged many lives, but there is still no cure.

The personal influence in Larson’s world is seen through his depiction of the four infected bohemians: Roger, Mimi, Angel, and Collins. Each character meets their condition with varying degrees of acceptance. We are cast as observers through Mark’s camera, watching what could be the end of their lives. Of the four, we see the most turmoil in Roger. Preferring isolation at times, Roger grasps for a sense of permanency in uncertainty through finding his legacy. While others pursue monetary success, or quick satiation of desire, the characters in Rent battle coming to terms with the unknown. Their lives are lived in light of the constant threat of death by choosing to have courage and find love.

Despite the cruel temporality of their bodies, Larson’s characters have hope. To the aching heart that cannot bear to take another risk, they sing, “There’s only us. There’s only this. Forget regret, or life is yours to miss. No other road. No other way. No day but today.”

His past UA credits include: Cabaret (Bobby), Othello (Duke of Venice), The Full Monty (Teddy), and The Fantasticks (Bellomy). Austin is the Vice President for the co-ed theatre fraternity, Theta Alpha Phi, here on campus. He would not be here today without the best family anyone could ask for, and thanks Danny and the rest of the faculty for their constant support and dedication to his learning and growth as an actor and a human being. Viva La Vie Boheme!

MADE IN TUCSON: FILMS FROM THE OLD PUEBLOAll Films in this Series Begin at 7pm Inside the UA Center for

Creative Photography & are FREE to the Public

tftv.arizona.edu

Join faculty and students from the School of Theatre, Film & Television as we explore the history of lmmaking in Tucson! Ever since the days of silent movies, Tucson has been a key location for Hollywood lmmakers. The western was the most popular genre, naturally, with Old Tucson serving as the shooting site for dozens of classic lms, starring legends including John Wayne, Paul Newman and Kirk Douglas. But non-westerns were also lmed in Tucson, with lmmakers taking adadvantage of the beautiful desert environment and the unique architecture of the city itself.

Over the course of the year, we will move from classic westerns of the '50s to more contemporary hits. The Widescreen Wednesdays program features not only the screening of a complete feature lm, but a lively and informative introduction to each lm by a UA professor. Plus, a student from the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film & Television will present one of his or her short lms!

RAISING ARIZONAApr 27, 2016Not shot in Tucson, but who can resist the Not shot in Tucson, but who can resist the Coen Brothers’ screwball comedy classic, set in Arizona? Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter star as a criminal couple who always wanted a child of their own. When they learn about the newborn "Arizona quints," they gure that ve babies is too many for anyone, and begin to concoct a zany kidnapping schemscheme. The American Film Institute declared Raising Arizona to be #31 on the list of the greatest American comedies of all time!
