Student Learning Objectives

Definition: A student learning objective (SLO) is a classroom level standards-based measure relevant to the content area taught during the current school year that is:

• Specific and measureable• Based on available prior student learning data• Written to measure growth and/or achievement

AZ Teacher Evaluation model contains Classroom SLOs and Targeted SLOs for a subset of students.

4

Page 5: Arizona Group B Teachers SLO Informational Webinar Dr. Carrie L. Giovannone Deputy Associate Superintendent of Research & Evaluation.

Classroom SLOs

A measure of student mastery within a specific content area. For the AZ Teacher Evaluation model we require this objective to include all students in a class/classes for one content area.

Examples:1. 90% of the students will pass Algebra I2. 18 out of 20 students will score a 3 or higher on the AP

World History exam

5

Page 6: Arizona Group B Teachers SLO Informational Webinar Dr. Carrie L. Giovannone Deputy Associate Superintendent of Research & Evaluation.

Targeted SLOs

A measure of student growth for a particular set of students in the lowest level of preparedness in order to master the content area.

Examples:1. 4 out of 6 students will increase 10 words per minute over

their baseline median score on the Oral Reading Fluency assessment.

2. 2 out of 3 students will improve one achievement level on the Drama performance final exam.

Pre-ApprovedAssessment Types for SLOs

State-Wide Assessments (i.e., AIMS, SAT10, AIMS A,

AZELLA)Content Assessments with

Reliability and Validity (e.g., NWEA, Galileo, Locally-

Created)Content Assessments

used LEA-Wide (e.g., end-of-course

Chemistry exam)Classroom

Two Options for PILOT 1 - Group BIn PILOT 1, every teacher (Group A and Group B) will be partially evaluated on School-wide/Grade Level Data and have the option of using SLOs:

Option 1:• Group B teachers (Grades: K, 1, 7-12 non-tested subject

teachers, Specials Teachers, and Resource Teachers) will be evaluated on one SLO and School-wide/Grade Level Data

• Each Group B teacher will choose one class to set the SLO used in the evaluation

Option2:• Group B teachers will use only School-wide/Grade Level Data

(e.g., AIMS data and/or other school-wide data) 8

Page 9: Arizona Group B Teachers SLO Informational Webinar Dr. Carrie L. Giovannone Deputy Associate Superintendent of Research & Evaluation.

Timeline for the SLO ProcessPre-Course

• Select Quality AssessmentsStart of Course

• Consider students’ previous performance using multiple resources (e.g., test scores from related courses, attendance rate, etc.) to group them into three academic levels of “preparedness”*M

id-Course

• Monitor student performance and adjust instructionEnd of Course

• Assess students’ performance and collect results

9*Students will be classified in one of three categories: low, medium, or high preparedness for the current course.

Evaluation

Page 10: Arizona Group B Teachers SLO Informational Webinar Dr. Carrie L. Giovannone Deputy Associate Superintendent of Research & Evaluation.

Steps of the SLO Process

• Consider assessments to use (e.g., performance based, LEA assessments, portfolios, etc.)

Quality Assessments

• Students’ performance of previous years from prerequisite courses, related courses in which they would gain background knowledge, or current year student performance in the first few weeks of course should be assessed.

Previous Performance

• Formative assessments (or diagnostic assessments) to track progress of students• Adjust instruction to meet students’ needs

Monitor Progress

• Score objectives and submit to evaluator for approval.
