ARINC Specification 444 Overview of Export Control Issues for Flight Training Devices

This document intends to provide the reader with an overview of the importance of export control along with general information to consider. This is not a complete primer on the subject but is intended to give the reader a basic understanding of export issues in the flight simulation and training industry. To serve the widest audience, a worldwide view is taken; however, as the U.S. regulations and requirements are considered the widest reaching, these are given the majority of attention in the text. This document does not serve the purpose of discussing Intellectual Property (IP), classified information, or specific logistics of any of these processes. However, it should be known that the concepts and tenets in this document may be applied to IP issues in very similar examples. Furthermore, this document is not all inclusive of every issue that may be evident in a technology transfer event. The intricacies of export control are complex and are not attempted to be fully defined here. To accurately address an organizations export control issues they should consult with experienced, knowledgeable professionals in this area.

ARINC Report 628P4C Cabin Equipment Interfaces (CEI), Part 4C, Cabin Management and Entertainment System - Cabin Distribution System - 2nd Generation - Daisy Chain

ARINC Specification 628 Part 4 defines standards for the aircraft IFE Cabin Distribution System (CDS) wiring, connectors, power, identification codes, space envelopes and mounting principles. The equipment itself is not a subject of this specification because it may be unique to the system manufacturer or market place driven. Design guidelines are included for informational purposes as these guidelines impact the interfaces and installation of cabin equipment aboard the aircraft. The CDS, in daisy chain architecture, is the content of both Parts 4A and 4C of ARINC Specification 628. Part 4C presents the second generation also known as 2GCN of the daisy chain topology, as an evolution based on the experience gained with the first version of the CDS. The main difference is that the system in Part 4C is divided into two separated networks, one for data, connected to the

Page 33: ARINC Standards Document List

Page 33 of 91

CEC, and the other one for power, connected to the Aircraft Power Supply. The second generation of the CDS was mainly introduced because of the need for more bandwidth (via quad-cables) and a newer version of the MCU, which allows for greater control over power distribution. Fiber-optic cables are not defined, because the new quad-cables were deemed more than sufficient for the expected bandwidths.

ARINC Report 653P4 Avionics Application Software Standard Interface, Part 4, Subset Services

This Specification defines the data exchanged statically (via configuration) or dynamically (via services) as well as the behavior of services provided by the O/S and used by the application. It is not the intent of this specification to dictate implementation requirements on either the hardware or software of the system, nor is it intended to drive certain system level requirements within the system which follows this standard. The majority of this document describes the runtime environment for embedded avionics software. This list of services identifies the minimum functionality provided to the application software and is, therefore, the industry standard interface. It is intended for this interface to be as generic as possible, since an interface with too much complexity or too many system specific features is normally not accepted over a variety of systems. The software specifications of the APEX interface are High Order Language (HOL) independent, allowing systems using different compilers and languages to follow this interface.

ARINC Standards 835 Guidance for Security of Loadable Software Parts Using Digital Signatures

Airlines place a high value on aircraft information security. This document provides background and detailed technical information on existing methods to secure loadable software parts. A user should be able to implement their own tools and processes associated with these security methods if desired.

ARINC Standards 840-2 Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) Application Control Interface (ACI) Standard

ARINC Specification 840 defines the Application Control Interface (ACI) protocol used by EFB software applications. The ACI establishes a means of communication that is standardized between the EFB Application Control Component (ACC) and the EFB software applications. The ACI protocol may be implemented several software layers residing in both the ACC and in each EFB application. To achieve the objectives of programming language independence and operating system independence, ARINC 840 defines a standard set of messages that are known to the EFB Applications and to the ACC. This allows EFB applications to be developed independent of the EFB platform.

ARINC Standards 842 Guidance for Usage of Digital Certificates

Newer generations of aircraft in production and use today are equipped with security applications that rely on digital certificates. It is expected that future aircraft will use certificates for increasing numbers of applications. The purpose of this document is to provide guidance for key life-cycle management, which refers to the phases through which digital certificates and associated cryptographic keys progress, from creation through usage to retirement. The guidance is based on open international standards that are adapted to the aviation environment, recognizing that a typical commercial airplane has a long lifespan, its operational environment is highly complex and regulated, and multiple stakeholders operate ground-based systems that communicate with airplanes. Using a standardized and consistent
