Ariel quotes
Full fathom five thy father lies; Of his bones are coral made; Those are Pearls that were his
eyes: Nothing of him that doth fade But doth suffer a sea changeInto something rich and strange.( Act 1 scene 2, 396- 401) , Ariel
• “ I have a different idea of a universal”.
• Cesaire explained to his former communist comrade-
• “It is of a universal rich with all that is particular, rich with all the particulars there are, the deepening of each particular, co-existence of them all”.
Cesaire’ s belief
• ‘ A Tempest’ is a politicized take on Shakespeare’s play created during the late Sixties.
• ‘ Post colonial response to ‘ The Tempest’ and as such deals much more with the story from the point of view of Caliban and Ariel.
• Caliban is a black slave • Spirit Ariel is represented
as a mulatto slave
• Caliban’s race and subsequent treatment
• Ariel in his role as the willing servant.
• Better treated but still a captive,
•Willing servant
• Ariel : Nevertheless, I’ve at least achieved one thing! He’s promised me my freedom. In the distant future of course, but it’s the first time he’s promised.
• Ariel : It’s no use trying to resist, young man. My master is a sorcerer: neither your passion nor your youth can prevail against him, your best course would be to follow and obey him.
• May be Ariel was not willing to be a slave but the hope of freedom and fear of being crushed by power made him to serve Prospero in A Tempest.
Hope of freedom
Conclusion
• Ariel was the spirit who willingly helped Prospero in The Tempest.
• But in A Tempest it seems his helplessness that forced him to serve Prospero as he had no other option.
