Call for employersto ask candidatesabout their volunteerwork in interviewsEMPLOYERS are routinelymissing out on top talent by notasking them about relevant vol-unteering experience on eithertheir application forms, or dur-ing job interviews, a CIPD re-port has revealed.
The findings – published inthe ‘Unlock new talent: Howcan you integrate social actionin recruitment’ report – foundthat only 16 per cent of employ-ers invite applicants to talkabout volunteering in their ap-plication process.
As well as this, only 31 percent ask them about it in a face-to-face interview.
This means that swathes of people with the skills employ-ers seek are being missed, theCIPD has warned.
Peter Cheese, CIPD chief executive, said: “Candidatesoften fail to highlight their so-cial action experience unlessgiven the opportunity to do so,as many still regard traditionalwork experience as being moreimportant to employers.”
He added: “By failing to un-
cover this experience duringthe recruitment stage, employ-ers could be missing out onenthusiastic individuals whohave precisely the types of em-ployability skills organisationstell us they need and struggle tofind.”
Although less than one-fifthof employers currently askabout volunteering experience, employers do value it.
Sixty-seven per cent of em-ployers reporting that entry-level candidates with previoussocial action experience dem-onstrate better employabilityskills.
According to the employerswho were surveyed, the topthree skills developed throughvolunteering are teamwork (82per cent), communication (80percent) andunderstandingthelocal community (45 per cent).
In response to the results,Cheese urged more employerstoask aboutthe experience can-didates might have in this area.
He said: “We believe there is astrong case for social action to
be integrated more widely intoorganisations’ people develop-ment and resourcing strate-gies.”
The report highlighted anumber of organisations inthe report for their best prac-tice approach in making surethat volunteering skills werediscussed, including PwC, Bar-clays, British Gas and NationalGrid.
Richard Irwin, PwC’s head of student recruitment, said: “Ourexperience shows that whilstA-Level assessment can indi-cate potential, for far too manystudents there are other factorsthat influence capabi lity.
He added: “Providing oppor-tunities for candidates to dem-onstrate skills gained outsideof academia, including socialaction, is one way of ensuringwe are a progressive employer.”
The Prince of Wales is cur-rently backing the #iwill cam-paign.
This aims to double the num-ber of people in social action by2020.
