Food

Menu

A wide variety of foods are enjoyed in this country, including not only the traditional dishes of Continental Europe, such as pasta and other meats, but also more localized foods, including chorizo (a spicy sausage), empanadas (a stuffed pastry), locro (a mixture of corn, beans, meat, bacon, onion, and gourd), and dulce de leche (a type of caramel milk jam) among other things.

Additionally, the wine industry has flourished, making Argentina the fith-most-important wine producer in the world, and one of the most significant areas outside of Europe for wine. MusicMenu

Argentina is the home of Tango, a distinct type of Latin music which blends European and African influences. During the 1930s through the 1950s Tango took hold of the country in much the same way as Jazz in the United States, with singers such as Carlos Gardel (pictured right), Anibal Troilo, and Francisco Canaro among others making important contributions.

Perhaps the most important area in the Spanish-speaking world for rock music, Argentine rock took off during the 1960s with such bands as Soda Stereo and Sumo gaining increased recognition. CitiesMenu

The largest city, Buenos Aires, contains over 3 million people and is one of the most important cities not only in Argentina but in Latin America. The Metropolitan area, it is estimated, contains more than 13 million people. A very urbanized country, the top ten metropolitan areas account for half of the entire countrys population. Buenos Aires is not only a center of economic activity and industry, but is also a cultural hub, full of rich architecture and a vibrant arts community, referred to by some as the Paris of South America.EconomyMenuPossessing the third-largest economy in Latin America, Argentina is considered to have a very high quality of life. It benefits from having a diversified economy, though historically it has struggled with uneven development. Still, it is now considered to be an emerging market, with Manufacturing standing as its most significant sector. The country also enjoys an abundance of natural resources, including oil.
