    Aboutthe FoundAtion

The AREMA Educational Foundation is a tax-exempt, charitable organization

established by the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-WayAssociation (AREMA), to promote educational activities related to railway

    engineering.

The Foundation provides scholarships to engineering students who are

specializing in the railway industry, as well as supporting other educational and

training endeavors that help to ensure the future of the profession.

Founded in 2000, the Foundation evolved out of the need to promote Railway

Engineering, and look to the future and prepare our next generation or railway

    engineers.

The AREMA Educational Foundation Scholarship Program continues to grow each year

with generous donations which allow the Foundation to award scholarships to deservingapplicants. The Scholarship Review Committee, a sub-committee of AREMA

Committee 24 - Education and Training, determines which scholarship(s) should be

awarded to which applicant and works to select only the most qualied railway-focused

    engineering students.

In 2010 the Foundation awarded $48,000 in scholarships to the following students:

In addition to the Scholarship Program the Foundation also supports other educational

and training endeavors including Student Chapters and the Railroad Engineering

    Education Symposium (REES).

AREMA Student Chapters have been established at the following three Universities:

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the Railroad Engineering and Activities

Club (REAC) at Michigan Technological University and Oregon State University.

The Railroad Engineering Education Symposium was rst developed in 2008 by

AREMA Committee 24, Education and Training. The second REES Event was held

in June 2010. The overall objective of REES is to provide engineering educators withmaterial to be incorporated into their courses and curriculum as an important rst step

in expanding the opportunities for railway engineering and transportation education in

    North America.

27, 2010 at the Falcons Fire Golf Club.

Participants in the Tournament were able to recognize a portion of their registration fee

as a tax-deductible contribution to the AREMA Educational Foundation.

The Golf Tournament provided several sponsorship opportunities. Each sponsorship

contribution beneted the AREMA Scholarship Fund.

    Make your donation count!

    Why Should i donAte?

The Railway engineering community is at a crossroads. As we transition to a younger

workforce, we need to prepare the next generation of builders and railway engineers.

The Foundation is funded solely by your contributions.

Donations are made by people in all aspects of the railway industry - previous

scholarship winners reinvesting in a future they see worth preserving, corporate

contributions by generous organizations looking ahead, and of course, our members.

The contributions of AREMA members have increased steadily since the

establishment of the Foundation. These donations create a substantial base for the

    AREMA Educational Scholarship Program.

Scholarships provided by the AREMA Educational Foundation are some of themost effective ways to encourage students to consider the rail industry as a career.

It has been exciting to see the increasing level of scholarships, as it really

demonstrates the importance and commitment placed by the industry in

securing the best talent as future railroad managers and experts. For students,

the potential to apply for AREMA scholarships extends beyond nancial aspects.

It motivates them to deepen their understanding of the industry and to take

that extra step that lifts their skills to another level. Therefore, I consider these

scholarships extremely important for our program and our students andI encourage anyone, who wants to develop new railroad professionals and

improve railroad engineering education, to consider a donation to the

    AREMA Educational Foundation.

    Pasi Lautala, Ph.D., P.E.

    Michigan Technological University

Graduating with a degree in civil engineering is only the beginning of what

I believe will be a long, rewarding career in the railroad industry. As a recent

graduate, it is all too apparent that this eld is overlooked by my peers.

The civil engineering profession requires continuous development of knowledgeand skills to better the life for all Americans, the support that Committee 24 and

    AREMA offers upholds this belief.
