Bankability in the solar energy industry is another word for “risk mitigation.”

Solar Module “Bankability”* is a Function of Reliability and Durability.Investors in the solar industry are gaining a better understanding of how to calculate actual returns on investments. Discussions regarding price are moving from a capacity basis, traditionally discussed in terms of cost per watt, to an energy generation basis, which is discussed in terms of cost per kilowatt-hour of energy produced and represented by estimated levelized cost of electricity (LCOE).

In today’s PV market, everyone from system owners to start up thin-film PV firms will tell you about their calculated LCOE. Many assumptions go into this calculation, one of those key assumptions being the system degradation rate, which is highly dependent on the stability of your encapsulant.

Consider This… Module Components Impact Module Durability.

STR Encapsulant Touches Every Component of the Solar Module, Therefore it Must Be Chemically & Physically Compatible to Enhance Module Durability.

Encapsulants are critical to solar modules, as they protect cells from the elements, bond the multiple layers together, and provide electrical isolation. Encapsulants must have high optical transparency, stability at high operating temperatures, the ability to withstand high levels of ultraviolet radiation, good adhesion to different module materials, adequate mechanical compliance to accommodate stresses induced by differences in thermal expansion coefficients between glass and cells, and high dielectric strength (electrical isolation). Even a slight deterioration of any of the properties of the encapsulant over time will impair the electrical output of the module, which is of critical importance to providing a 20 to 25-year working life of a solar module.

During solar module assembly, the encapsulation process is typically accomplished by vacuum lamination, wherein a “pre-lam” stack (as depicted in the diagrams to the right) is fashioned into a singular part comprising multiple layers. Sheets of EVA are inserted over and under the PV cells. Heating the “sandwich” then causes the EVA to cure, thus bonding the module into one piece. This step occurs towards the end of the manufacturing process and is critical to the entire solar module, as there is only one opportunity to laminate correctly.

STR encapsulant minimizes stress load to cells; provides a thermal expansion buffer and absorbs stress to prevent cell cracking as well as module deformation. Bonds cells to glass.

Probably the oldest and most widely discussed solar module differentiator is module efficiency. Maintaining high module efficiency over time means that project IRR can be maximized, because electricity generation remains at expected rates. STR PHOTOCAP® EVA encapsulant does not discolor and helps to maintain original cell efficiency while being a small part of the overall cost of the solar module.

MODULE DELAMINATION is the loss of adhesion between the encapsulant and other module layers. Delamination in the field can occur in cases where the encapsulant was improperly cured or where chemical incompatibilities between the encapsulant and other module components exist. Most of the delamination observed in the field has occurred at the interface between the encapsulant and the front surface of the solar cells or back sheet in the module. Delamination is more frequent and more severe in hot and humid climates, sometimes occurring after less than five years of exposure. Delamination first causes a performance loss due to optical de-coupling of the encapsulant from the cells. Of greater concern, is the likelihood that the void resulting from the delamination will provide a preferential location for moisture accumulation, greatly increasing the possibility of corrosive failure in metallic contacts.

Our EVA Touches Everything in the Module.Another important aspect of the encapsulant is dimensional stability. Shrink or inadequate adhesion during the lamination process of the PV solar modules can occur, and may result in voids or holes in the encapsulant during module lamination, which are considered defects and cause for rejection of the entire panel.
