4

A mother bird sat on

her egg.

Page 5: Are You My Mother

5

The egg jumped.

Page 6: Are You My Mother

6

“Oh oh!” said the

mother bird. “My baby

will be here! He will

want to eat.”

Page 7: Are You My Mother

7

“I must get something

for my baby bird to

eat!” she said. “I will be

back!”

Page 8: Are You My Mother

8

So away she went.

Page 9: Are You My Mother

9

The egg jumped. It

jumped, and jumped, and

jumped!

Page 10: Are You My Mother

10

Out came the baby

bird!

Page 11: Are You My Mother

11

“Where is my mother?”

he said.

Page 12: Are You My Mother

12

He looked for her.

Page 13: Are You My Mother

13

He looked up. He did

not see her.

Page 14: Are You My Mother

14

He looked down. He did

not see her.

Page 15: Are You My Mother

15

“I will go and look for

her,” he said.

Page 16: Are You My Mother

16

So away he went.

Page 17: Are You My Mother

17

Down, out of the tree

he went.

Page 18: Are You My Mother

18

Down, down, down! It

was a long way down.

The baby bird could

not fly.

Page 19: Are You My Mother

19

He could not fly, but

he could walk. “Now I

will go and find my

mother,” he said.

Page 20: Are You My Mother

20

He did not know what

his mother looked like. He

went right by her. He did

not see her.

He came to a kitten.

“Are you my mother?”

he said to the kitten.

Page 21: Are You My Mother

21

The kitten just looked

and looked. It did not

say a thing.

Page 22: Are You My Mother

22

The kitten was not his

mother, so he went on.

Then he came to a

hen.“Are you my mother?”

he said to the hen.

Page 23: Are You My Mother

23

Page 24: Are You My Mother

24

“No,” said the hen.

The kitten was not

his mother.

The hen was not

his mother.

Page 25: Are You My Mother

25

So the baby bird went on.

“I have to find my

mother!” he said. “But

where? Where is she?

Where could she be?”

Then he came to a

dog.“Are you my mother?”

he said to the dog.

Page 26: Are You My Mother

26

“I am not your mother.

I am a dog,” said the dog.

The kitten was not

his mother.

Page 27: Are You My Mother

27

The hen was not

his mother.

The dog was not

his mother.

Page 28: Are You My Mother

28

So the baby bird went

on. Now he came to a

cow.

Page 29: Are You My Mother

29

“Are you my mother?”

he said to the cow.

Page 30: Are You My Mother

30

“How could I be your

mother?” said the cow. “I

am a cow.”

Page 31: Are You My Mother

31

The kitten and the hen

were not his mother.

Page 32: Are You My Mother

32

The dog and the cow

were not his mother.

Did he have a mother?

Page 33: Are You My Mother

33

“I did have a mother,”

said the baby bird. “I

know I did. I have to

find her. I will. I WILL!”

Page 34: Are You My Mother

34

Now the baby bird

did not walk. He ran!

Then he saw a car.

Could that old thing be

his mother? No, it could not.

Page 35: Are You My Mother

35

The baby bird did not

stop. He ran on and on.

Now he looked way,

way down.

Page 36: Are You My Mother

36

He saw a

boat. “There she is!” said

the baby bird. He called to the boat,

but the boat did not

stop.

The boat went on.

Page 37: Are You My Mother

37

He looked way, way up.

He saw a big plane.“Here I am, Mother,”

he called out.

But the plane did not stop.

The plane went on.

Page 38: Are You My Mother

38

Just then, the baby bird

saw a big thing. This

must be his mother!“There she is!” he said.

“There is my mother!”

He ran right up to it.“Mother, Mother! Here

I am, Mother!” he said

to the big thing.

Page 39: Are You My Mother

39

But the big thing just

said, “Snort.”

Page 40: Are You My Mother

40

“Oh, you are not my

mother,” said the baby

bird. “You are a Snort.

I have to get out of

here!”

Page 41: Are You My Mother

41

But the baby bird could

not get away. The Snort

went up.

Page 42: Are You My Mother

42

It went way, way up.And up, up, up went

the baby bird.

But now, where was

the Snort going?

“Oh, oh, oh! What is

this Snort going to do to

me? Get me out of here!”

Page 43: Are You My Mother

43

Just then, the Snort

came to a stop.

“Where am I?” said the

baby bird. “I want to go

home! I want my

mother!”

Page 44: Are You My Mother

44

Then something

happened.

The Snort put that

baby bird right back in

the tree. The

baby bird was home!

Page 45: Are You My Mother

45

Just then the mother

bird came back to the

tree. “Do you know who

I am?” she said to her

baby.

Page 46: Are You My Mother

46

“Yes, I know who you

are,” said the baby bird.

“You are not a kitten.“You are not a hen.“You are not a dog.“You are not a cow.

Page 47: Are You My Mother

47

“You are not a boat,or a plane, or a Snort!”

“You are a bird, and

you are my mother.”
