Refur held the egg gingerly in his mouth as he trotted over the rocky ground. Eggs were plentiful now, but that might not be the case come winter. He dug enthusiastically, uncovering his cache of eggs, and deposited his latest find.

A movement up ahead caught his eye. Though her chocolate-colored coat blended into the summer landscape, he spotted his sister, Loppa, among the rocks. Pretending not to notice her, he covered his stash, and when Loppa pounced, he was ready. He caught her mid-jump, and then they were wrestling, playing as they often did.

As Refur and his siblings grew older, they left the family den to start their own dens. The days grew colder. With winter coming, long, thick, white fur replaced Refur’s short, chocolate-y coat. When the first snow fell, Refur could blend perfectly into his environment. It made hunting easier for him. Unfortunately, by that time, there was little prey to hunt, and he had to rely more and more on his hidden egg supply.

In late spring, during a visit to his cache, he spotted a small figure scratching at the ground near his eggs. He slunk along in the snow, then pounced, catching the thief in the act. They snapped at each other—then Refur saw it was his sister. Loppa explained that the hunting was scarce near her den, and her caches were depleted. The siblings decided to work together to find food until summer returned, when it would be plentiful once again.
