June – August 2014 Summer at Arcola Theatre This summer promises new voices and original talent paired with true classics. Starting the summer season off is the world premiere of Between Us, the latest play from writer Sarah Daniels, commissioned by Arcola Theatre. Directed by John Burgess, it is a darkly comic and touching piece with an incredible team behind it and talented cast including Charlotte Cornwell. Studio 1 plays host to Morphic Graffiti’s inventive revival of the classic American musical Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel, full of well-known songs that you’ll be humming long after you’ve left, followed soon after by Rashid Razaq’s The Nightmares of Carlos Fuentes. Based on an award- winning short story by Hassan Blasim, the world premiere will be directed by Nicolas Kent. At the end of June, we begin our Arcola Creative Engagement Summer Season, with performances from each of our community groups. The Season begins with a double bill of plays from Ala-Turka, directed by Aylin Bozok, followed by company devised pieces from our Arcola Youth Theatre, Young AYT and 60+ groups, as well as Boy, an original production written for families and younger audiences. PlayWROUGHT also returns with six exciting new plays, this time showcasing writers of Middle Eastern, Asian and North African heritage. Our Arcola Academy will wrap the Creative Engagement Summer Season up with Napoleon Blown Apart,a gypsy-punk opera written and directed by award-winning director Alex Brown, kicking off this year’s Grimeborn Opera Festival. For the eighth year in a row, Grimeborn Opera Festival will once again take place in both Studios over the course of August. As always, we look forward to bringing audiences a mix of new works and well-established operas, including our own production of Jules Massenet’s Werther. Full festival details and an overview of each piece are available on our website. With world premieres, iconic music and something for the whole family, this is sure to be a hot summer at Arcola Theatre. Come and join us! See you soon. Mehmet Ergen Artistic Director arcola theatre

Voted the best musical of the 20th Centuryby Time Magazine, Carousel is the classicAmerican musical, with a timeless score thatincludes the songs If I Loved You, June IsBustin’ Out All Over and the iconic You’llNever Walk Alone. This imaginativeinterpretation from Morphic Graffiti illuminatesthe immediacy of this heart lifting story; thebelief in forgiveness and the power of thehuman spirit.

When mill worker Julie Jordan falls for themasculine charms of Billy Bigelow, a chain ofevents unravels that suggests their destiny ispredetermined by the hand of fate. Set on theNew England coastline, against the backdropof the Great Depression, this reimagining ofRodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel chartsa story of recklessness, regret and redemption.

I’m only fourteen... I don’t really understandwhat War is, but I know what I believe in, whoI love and what I need to do to protect them.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of WorldWar I, Boy is a new production for younger audiences inspired by theincredible true story of Jack Cornwall, a normal boy from East Londonwho did extraordinary things and paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Working with acclaimed choreographer Tony Adigun (founder ofAvant Garde Dance and Creative Director of Sky's Got To Dance),this production fuses music, contemporary dance and street theatretechniques. Boy tries to understand why a young child would choose tofight for their country, the special qualities that make ordinary peopledo extraordinary things and asks audiences to question what they arewilling to fight for.

29 July – 2 August 2014 Studio 2

Adapted and Directed by Alex Brown

On Christmas Eve 1800, a bomb exploded in a horse and cart on RueSt Nicaise in Paris, killing several innocent civilians – one of the firstrecorded uses of an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) in an act ofterrorism. The target, Napoleon, was on his way to the opera to watchthe opening of Hadyn’s ‘Creation’, and had passed the so-called ‘InfernalMachine’ seconds before it detonated, narrowly escaping the blast…

This new play with songs will be adapted and directed by JMK Awardwinner Alex Brown (The Island, Young Vic). With a cast of 10, includingthree actor musicians, this fascinating plot will be adapted for the stage.Opera will collide with gypsy punk to create an explosive live performancewith a cast of 18-25 year olds who audition to be part of the ArcolaAcademy, exclusively through IdeasTap.
