HISTORICAL NOTE The organization that embraced veterans who had
served the United States on land or sea during the Civil War,
1861-1865, was the Grand Army of the Republic. Its purpose was the
cultivation of fraternity, comradeship, and patriotism among Union
Veterans. The G.A.R. also exercised a political role and during the
late 19th century was able to wield considerable influence in state
and national politics. The G.A.R. sprang up in Illinois in 1866 and
spread rapidly
throughout the country. The plan of organization provided for
individual posts at the local or precinct level. County
organizations were called districts. At the state level, the
organizations were known as Departments, e.g. Department of
Nebraska. All post meetings, district meetings, and national
encampments were designed to promote the growth of the order, to
protect and assist disabled soldiers and their families, and to
engender appreciation of service to the United States through
moral, social, and political activity. The first post in Nebraska
was chartered at the organization of the National G.A.R. in April
of 1866 at Omaha, Nebraska. Nebraska was constituted a provisional
department on July 10, 1867, but when no reports were received at
the national
headquarters, the state was dropped from the rolls. In 1874, a
provisional Department commander was appointed. At the first annual
encampment of the Department of Nebraska held at Omaha, June 12,
1877,the Department became a permanent part of the G.A.R.
organization. There were twelve local posts were in the state at
that time. A total of 356 posts were organized in the state,
1866-1908. With the passing of the union veterans came the demise
of the G.A.R. By 1940 only a few posts remained, and in 1944 the
last regular encampment of the Department of Nebraska was held in
Lincoln with only one member present. The last civil war veteran in
Nebraska, Michael Bondoll of Beatrice, died on December 24,
1948.

RG026 Grand Army of the Republic. Department of Nebraska 3
Individual post records can be found in Series Eight through Series
Eleven and include reports of the Adjutant and Quartermaster of
each post, 1879-1944; Registers of individual members of posts and
their war records, 1879-1930; Post rosters and descriptive books;
and minute books of some individual posts. The reports of Series
Eight are organized by post number and by year. Post charters (if
present) have been removed from this series and included in Series
Twelve. Also included in Series Nine, is one reel of microfilm
containing the Records of Baker Post #9, Columbus, Nebraska. The
Official Roster of Civil War Soldiers in Nebraska as ordered by the
G.A.R. Department Council of Administration in May 1911 has
been
microfilmed and exists as Series Ten. Volumes One and Two of
this series are indexes to volumes one through four of the roster.
Patrons should ignore old inventory at the beginning of these
reels. Soldiers & Sailors of Illinois, 1888-1897, are listed in
the single volume of Series Thirteen. This volume lists Illinois
soldiers and sailors who were Nebraska residents in the years
1888-1897. Series Fourteen includes miscellaneous records relating
to the Department of Nebraska G.A.R. and individual members of that
group. Also included in one 42' reel of 35mm microfilm of The Great
Republic, 1867-1868, published in Washington, D.C., and microfilmed
by the Library of Congress in 1978. Oversize items included in this
series
are two G.A.R. scrapbooks, a facsimile of the charter of
original post #1; a charter of the National Association of Union
Ex-prisoners of War; and miscellaneous printed matter relating to
the civil war but not strictly the Nebraska Department. Burial
Records for Civil War Soldiers killed in action and buried in
Nebraska and Civil War Veteran residents buried in Nebraska are
included in the final series of the collection. The G.A.R. burial
records can be found on microfilm in the James C. Olson Reference
Library (East Reference Room). Lists of soldiers killed during the
war and buried in Nebraska can be found in Box 74. The burial
records on microfilm provide an alphabetical card file of all known
G.A.R. members in Nebraska, which may not be complete. The card
registers the veteran's war record, death dates, former residence,
and cemetery lot
numbers. An addition to this series added in 1995 includes an
update of burial cards and adding of names of veterans of Nebraska
companies who served during the period, 1861-1865. This project was
compiled by Gerald Sherard of Colorado for the Historical Society.
The added cards mostly identify men who served in Nebraska
companies or were located in Nebraska at one time. For the most
part, only the name and company or post location is given. The
records of the Grand Army of the Republic were given to the
Historical Society in the summer of 1922 (Neb. History Magazine,
July-Sept. 1922, #3, p.33) and transferred to the State Archives in
1966 from storage in the Capitol Building vaults. Additional
records have been added from private collections of the Historical
Society, most recently the papers of John Andrew Miller, MS0158;
Frank H. Johnson,
MS2612; and Martin J. Feenan, MS2606. The G.A.R. burial cards
were microfilmed by the Historical Society and the film may be
found in the

microfilm reference room shelved with other military membership and
veterans records. The same is true for the Official Roster of
Nebraska Veterans, 1911. A cross-index to G.A.R. posts in Nebraska
is provided as an appendix to this inventory and available in the
east reference room binders only.
