    Vidal SassoonLe Corbusier

    Architect Inspired

Le Corbusier influenced the way that people lived but Vidal Sassoon changed the waypeople looked and how they felt about themselves in the mirror. He was an icon in the fashionindustry, specifically in the area of hairdressing. Both are still seen in our culture todaythatshow great it was.

To create architecture is to put in order. Put what in order? Function and objects.

The home is the treasure chest of living

Architecture is the learned game, correct and magnificent, of

    forms assembled in the light.

A house is a machine for living in.

Space and light and order. Those things that men need just as much as

they need bread or a place to sleep.

Vehement silhouettes of Manhattan-the vertical city with unimaginable diamonds.

Corbusier saw the house as a machine for living were everything was in orderspace, light, function and objects.

Only life regret not being able to go to school to study architecture.

Hair is another name for sex

My whole work, beginning in the late 1950s, came from the Bauhaus. It was all about studying the bonestructure of the face, to bring out the character. I hated the prettiness that was in fashion at that time.

Architects have always been my heroes.

I was cutting geometric architectural shapesand it felt good, because it worked.

Sassoon was primarily influenced by the bauhous and architectural forms thatrevolutionized the future of hair and fashionspecifically in the 1960s.

    1. The Supports

Each of Corbusiers 5 points are illustrated and compared to Sassoons work:

We want to point out the architectural support of the neck and legs in fashion and hairstyling that sassoon used in each haircut as well as the underlying hair beneath the cut. Thisconnects to the pelote that corbusier developed to support the form on top that, although takeninto account, did not affect the structure on top.

    2. The Roof Gardens

Through the rooftop gardens, corbusiers idea is to use the space you take through thearchitecture for domestic purposes making it easy maintenance, self-sustaining and recoveryof the built up area.

Vassoons haircuts were organic to the shape of the face and did not require a lot to

maintain-- in other words, shorter hair is easy to take care of.

He saw the shape of a womans face as the landscape for his haircuts.

    3. The Free Design of the Ground-Plan

  • 8/2/2019 Architecture+Hair

    12/31

Free design is a large aspect of the essay from Corbusier and is also the majority of whatSassoon attempted to show through his hairstyles. This focused on the raw materials, primarily concrete and free use of the ground space.

He focused on the face and bone structure--the natural materials--as a method ofinforming each, individual haircut and embraced the original features of the person.

As you see here, Color blocking was a fashion trend in the 60s as well.

This is an example of individual colors and textures working by themselves but alsoworking together as a whole outfit, just as the ground plan and facade and interior andexterior design work together.

    4. The Horizontal Window

  • 8/2/2019 Architecture+Hair

    15/31

Corbusiers primary goal for ribbon windows was to illuminate the space to the maximumamount. These horizontal windows let light and air to enter the space.

Sassoon used this same idea to all the viewer to see the models features to the bestadvantage. He opened up the neck and face for exposure and allowed a grid to show throughhis haircuts through their structure.

    5. The Free Design of the Facade

  • 8/2/2019 Architecture+Hair

    19/31

Back to free design, Corbusiers building plans for the facade extended beyond thesupports and allowed it to be independent from the design of the interior space to be utilizedand design in any way.

    20/31

Sassoon was dissatisfied with the prettiness of haircuts of the time and wanted torevolutionize the hair as a part of the person.

  • 8/2/2019 Architecture+Hair

    21/31

To do this, He focused attention on natural shapes and made them more interesting framedby a great cut. His blunt, modern style made him a celebrity and in turn, he helped createstars.

Free design of the facade can also be seen through fashion as a cover/facade for the body. The gridded structure shows up in the pattern of the dresses as well as the geometric shapes tomany of the clothes produced.

Architecture is also the inspiration for corbusiers furniture design that can be seen inSassoons styles.

The people that were influenced by Corbusier, like Meis Van Der Roe, were also whatinspired some of Sassoons work.

We are going to utilize only the first floor of the H&R blockspace through the first andsecond galleries. The first gallery will be used to display the free design of the facade andground plan.

The second gallery will be altered to show the supports, rooftop gardens, and horizontal

    windows.

For materials, we would like to make special use of texture as the visitor is led throughthe space through the iphone application that connects corbusier and sassoon.

In addition to emphasis on texture, we want to include many of the images and quotes thatyou previously viewed to illustrate the comparison as a part of the exhibit. For example; color

blocking, grid, curvature, angles and lines.

Drawing connections between hair and architectureMOD IN MODERN

Corbusier gave 5 points towards a new architecture and Sassoon developed the 5 pointhaircut. One influenced the other and both made a big difference in their professional worldsthat continue to influence architecture and styling today.
