End Septe mb er 20 12 witnessed a hu ge loss to the architecture fraternity of India, in the demise of renowned Delhi-based architect and professorMansinh M Rana. The extent of his dedication to architecture and education
gets exemplified in his being a participant in the process right till the last days. Hispassion for the profession was very evident right from the earlier days. An architectwith a mission, he evolved over a period of time into an extraordinarily roundedpersonality with a vision. It was this vision of his in the late eighties that made him afounder member in establishing an architecture school in the precincts of Delhi where he a ttemp ted to bring in a m eaningful and innovative change in the veryperception of architecture education in India. With an international exposure andhaving me t the great masters of that time, he evolved his own vocabulary inarchitectural practice and went all out in p resenting a robust unde rstanding of theprofession to the bureaucrats and th e government o f an em erging India of theeighties trying to establish an identity of her own devoid of the British influence.
Apart from the immense contribution to architecture, M M Rana was also aspontaneous human being with immense sensitivities. His skills as a teacher andguide d evelope d a natural and genuine rappo rt with his pupils who also be came amajor source of his un-diminishing youthful energy. He always believed thatarchitects ought to strive with pardonable assumption, to aim for excellencethough th ere are no safe formulae and traditions for such prepa ration. Reacting tothe gene ral disenchantm ent a round, he o nce observed, I have und er suchcircumstances, resolved to go it alone, on my own terms and on m y own steam. Indeciding to stand erect and be reckoned with, I am really not alone. Self-respect andself-esteem are too dear a price to barter for a whole lot of ifs and buts and other
strings that come attached to unethical professional compromises. My khoj (search)for our roots and fragrance continues...Architect Rana would, of course,
for many years to come, be fondlyremem bered as an iconic guidingforce to achieve rationalisedprofessional and personal pursuits. We salute the inherent b uoyant spiritof his delightful soul and dedicate thisIssue to him
