The purpose of these projects as a whole were to design and work with-in constrained amounts of spaces and discover unique ways to hurdle certain requirements. Each had a separate set of instructions such as a restricted amount of material, or a certain area being aloud to touch the ground.

The 100+1 projects used 100 or more of an item and only a single type of fastener. One was simply an installa-tion, while the other functioned as a body mantle. For my projects I used cupcake tins and metal brads, and coffee filters and string. It was interesting to see the patterns that emerged from these projects after putting so many of a single item together.

In this case study, we worked in groups of four to create scaled models and drawings of a building around campus. The building presented here is the One Stop Student Re-search Center.

The monolith was a project that took layers of wood put together, then hand rasped down to create an object that could comfortably fit in the hand in multi-ple ways.

Spring 2015Using 16 pictures I found of a similar theme and flow, I com-bined and abtracted movements to create a single graphic piece that represents both shape and space.

Spring 2015These were the first few stages of the object for the body project. From previous pictures of both the monolith project and finding different ways to occupy a chair, we extracted ideas and created iterations from those in groups that grew in size throughout the project. This coming together of groups caused the amount of changes in each iteration.

Spring 2015The final construction of this “object for the body” took place in a 4’ by 4’ by 8’ area outside in the Engineering Quadrangle of UC. All the previous iterations came to life in this construction.

Fall 2015In a 50’ x 50’ x 100’ urban setting I created a functional space using only 7 elements. Within these seven elements are several separate spaces for multiple functions such as a place for study or a place of overlook.

The final language of this project is very geometric and monolithic because many times when people envision a wall they think of something flat. I wanted to experiment with what happens when this “rule” of a wall is broken.

Athenaeum

24The athenaeum is a place to gather in the common interest of knowledge and the arts first used by the Greeks. Given square footage and programs that reflected that of the Boston athenaeum we were to design a building within Cincinnati’s urban enviroment. One of the main focuses of my design was view and receiving a large amount of daylight while still retaining privacy.

25The grandness of the main stair and entry rises over the administration programs to allow the galleries and library to be located atop a platform that allows a higher vantage point and the stairs are made slightly larger than the average stair to encourage people to sit and perhaps take in a speech given on the sidewalk, much like the Greeks may have.
