The building is a Digital Arts Center located on the site that is at the junction between Bilbao and the streets of Morocco, the latter confronted with the Central Park of Barcelona Poblenou

The building interacts with its immediate environment. Its facade with openings onto the southeast and southwest, the streets of Bilbao and the streets of Morocco. The building retranqueja in the north, you can create an outdoor space, and allow the building to open up Can Ricart factory prem-ises of a great interest in industrial heritage of Barcelona and Catalan

The corner is the place to make the entrance to the building. Opt for the open corner to create a tran-sitive outdoors between the street and the lobby, and also to avoid the corner and the resulting un-wanted angles. In addition the building is raised above the street level to provide privacy to rooms with windows on the street, so in this corner can be given a minimum slope to access the building.

The building consists of a very different volumes. This set of volumes seen from the outside shows the inner workings of the building. The large room is the representation, is located in the longitudinal direction of the sun and Morocco withdrew from the street so as not to give a very violent front in front of the street and the park. The volume that surrounds the great room has all the services that are linked to the great room, and that this difference need openings. The volume of Moroccan woman on the street is dedicated to the learning area. It is separated from others by the court that the illumi-nated foyer. This separation allows different well the different uses of the building.

The circulations are important in the longitudinal direction of the building. The foyer has this provision as it communicates with the living room area with representation and learning in a sense, in the other direction and communicates with the lobby space that women in Can Ricart.

The foyer is lit by a court. The entrance foyer in natural light is good because it gives the glazed south-east and the volume of the other side of the courtyard below. Must therefore regulate the in-coming light with slats arranged as a brise-soleil that constitute the front.

Two different coatings exterior faç ade is the large representation of the room, the rest of the building. The lining is a large ceramic tiles with ceramic type TERREAL Maestral of 200 x 1400 mm. The imple-mentation of this type of facade is simple and fast because the pieces are placed on a metal rail system anchored to concrete wall. The ceramic pieces are smooth dark gray. The siding of the rest of the building consists of two types of ceramic pieces, a cladding and brise-soleil of another, for windows that open to the southeast and southwest. These pieces are placed on a system guiel metal.

HONORABLE MENTION

CONCEPT:

The building is located in Alicante, a city on the south-east of Spain, which is notable for its mainly horizontal and low skyline, with only three significant tall buildings which compete with the Santa Bárbara Castle, the tallest building in de city. Our building seeks to complete the skyline, turning it into the tallest one but always respecting the castle.

InIn the city, the building will be situated in an area which is now being transformed, where the removal of the current railway track station that is taking place, will turn this area into a big central park. Hence, the building attempts to be the main access point to the new park and to act as a transition from the park to the city.

RejectingRejecting the traditional model of an only vertical tower, the project proposes two twin differ-ent towers connected to each other by a basement that forms a continuous façade in ground floor. The different height of the two towers favors the integration of the building within the environment. The main tower works as a point of reference while the low one re-lates with the neighbor buildings.

The basement makes the transition from the city to the park which is achieved by creating two façades; a vertical and continuous one with strategic accesses from the shopping street, and another much lower and permeable façade, with small ramps and green stairs which provide continuity to the park until the roof of the basement. The continuity of the park moves from the heart of the building until the highest part of the towers, by means of a cen-tral yard which will generate natural ventilation, reducing the temperature of the building. Climbing plants, placed on this yard, will colonize the structure, thus the green way will go upup and, in some places, it will go out to the exterior of the building through spacious view-points. These viewpoints, where big trees will be able to grow, will be strategically placed seeking the best views of the city and the highest amount of sunlight.

AIM:

TheThe competition aims to shed new light on the meaning and value of tall buildings in modern society from the perspectives of green, safety, and humanity. Tall buildings are no longer just mere representations of modern cities; they are an integral part of our everyday life. They have expanded their role from providing space for commercial purposes to also include sat-isfying residential needs. They are fast becoming an important feat of human engineering, as they meet the growing demands of urban dwelling and reshaping the landscape of modern cities.

CONNECTION TO THE GREEN CORRIDOR

PROGRAM ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGIES

SUN SPACES NATURAL VENTILATION

SKIN VIEWS

The making of these spacious viewpoints are possible thanks to the structure of the build-ing, which is composed by a system of big central pillars with metallic truss leaning over them. Struts hang from these truss making the framework hang, so that, the viewpoints can be pillar-free. The free space is used to host, depending on the situation of the truss, ma-chinery, waste treatment plant, or fertile land spaces to grow plants and trees.

The proposal opts for the creation of a multidisciplinary area hosting shops, restaurants, of-fices, hotels and luxury apartments. Combining workplace and dwelling will favor commu-nal life, as the aim of the project is to create a public space where people will interact with each other at all times.

The exterior skin will counteract the effects of the high level of solar radiation that the build-ing will have to withstand due to its radiation. This skin, will act as a sunshade and protect the façade which, depending on the season, can be permeable (ventilation) or closed (greenhouse effect). The skin consists of square pieces which rest on vertical girder and are formed by a low emissivity glass with photovoltaic cells which provide shadows (passive sustainability) and produce energy (active sustainability), so that the building be-comes a solar energy electric power station, capable of being self-sufficient and providing electricity. The density of the photovoltaic cells of these square pieces obtains a system of pixels which goes from a dark blue color to a light blue one. The combination of these cells makes the skin of the building looks like the sea waves situated in front of it.

“Block 11“ is the warehouse that the residents of Can Batlló voluntarily self-manage”. The transfer of the factory, along with part-time opening a space for free movement inside the compound, was achieved thanks to neighborhood strikes.

ThisThis warehouse has become a public library available to all the neigh-bourhood. As we have said, this library is voluntarily self-mangaged. There are no funds for the library. We are in a “scarcity” situation.

What we decided to do for improving the conditions in the library is to design some lamps for reading and for the ilumination of the library, using leftover materials that were in the warehouse, that was an an-cient textile factory

The “Block 11” warehouse is in an enclosure. Access to the site is through a small metal door that faces the street.

The problem is that the building is not in sight from the street. In addi-tion, the building does not look like a library.

Something has to be done with a short-term intervention, to make people from the neighbourhood feel curiosity and to know that some-thing is happening inside.

We decided to create a big arrow in the corner of the building that is in sight from the street. This arrow is pointing to the entrance of the li-brary. The arrow is made with leftover materials of the textile factory
