I grew up in Lisbon, Portugal where I attended an American School through out a period of 10 years. This led me to grow up with an interest-ing split cultural experience, which still influ-ences my design sensibilities today.

I completed my Bachelor of architecture in Lisbon and am now in my last semester, of my Masters of Architecture. These distinct cultur-al educations have culminated in an interest for effective and minimalist aesthetics. I am fascinated in applying design and technology to the improvement of our public spaces by developing a method of publicactivation which could be applied worldwide.

FLOW DIAGRAM

Roller derby is a very dynamic and violent sport so I started by wanting to create a simple shell that would contain the sport inside. Something that was pure and simple on the outside but once you entered the intensity of the game would contrast with the outside of the building. It was very important for me to mantain a steady flow of movement around the tracks. I wanted people to go around the track and interact with it as much as possible, as well as engage with the outside. This led to the opening of the large windows, which allowed people from the outside to see this relationship and feel compelled to enter the building.

RED HOOK

Page 11: architecture portfolio 2014

The Red Hook neighborhood functions as two sides: The Back and The Front, which are disconnected from each other. The aim then was to understand what did connect the two sides so that the project could contribute to promote unity as well as diversity in this neighborhood. The solution was a ramp that promotes social interaction through out its development, with spaces such as: market place, playgrounds, residencial farm-ing plots, coffee shop, amphitheatre stairs and gardens.

In 2013 I visited 10 cities in Asia and the features which stuck out to me the most were: the respect and harmony with na-ture and the food culture. This project is located in chinatown between the food(north) and residential(south) districts and next to the chinatown market. So I wanted to emphasize this cycle by catering towards it. The north of the project features food kiosks, coffee shop and playful topography. The south of the project features a sitting area in order for the community to come together. On the second level of the library there is a green roof for the community and a terrace with view towards downtown.

In 2011 I assisted Prebuild in a competition for re-designing Novartis offices in Portugal. The idea for the interior space began from trying to bring dynamism to an existing space through an economical way. Since there were existing pillars I decided to extend them out and create an exhibition area integrated with benches, inspired in tree roots. The reception area then becomes simultaneously a waiting area and an exhibition space. This idea of tree trunk is then applies to the remaining floors because there are two central cores that run vertically through the building. I assisted the WKK team in the creation of the concept, choos-ing materails, 3D modeling and renders.

While working for Roula Architects I worked in the design for the addition of a Research and Technology facility for Cook County Jail. The facility is divided so that the Basement and 1st level are where the drop and receive of inmates occurs, as well as the place where counseling and medication takes place. In the 2nd to 5th floor is where the inmates are kept in 24 to 38 people cells. I assisted in field reports, furniture bidding, furniture counting, fire plans, interior cell renders and details.

Step 1: Collect reclaimed wood:Collect reclaimed materials along the route. I believe in the importance of reducing waste, particularly from the building industry, and creating a new life for materials that can contrib-ute to the good of public space. Step 2: Transport wood:The idea is to collect these reclaimed materials in one city , and take them to the next city, where they can be re-used. Step 3: Gift:Construct benches for a public space, as a gift from the city before. This will create a bond between the citie as well as liven public space.
