This generative process began with analyzing sectional qualities of a form derived from a study of pattern. Initially a specific pattern was chosen to distinguish between solid and void, the presence and absence of material, in this case 1 ply Bristol board. Developing this pattern to create a three dimensional spatial quality was achieved by producing a corner condition from three pieces of the 1 ply Bristol with the chosen pattern subtracted from the surface of each side. This allowed for an opportunity to play connect the dots to generate various iterations of the one pattern cutout. Connecting voids from one surface to the next provided a lattice work of intersecting corridors
reading as straight tubes. As part of the project it was required that one adjective be chosen to describe an investigation that helped define the spacial quality of the newly generated third dimension from a two dimensional pattern. NODE was the adjective that was designated to this generative process and the investigation focused on the intersecting points of these straight corridor tubes. Classifying these NODES as points of interest it was apparent that a NODE in terms of grid formation is the intersection of vectors in the X and Y direction. Juxtaposing the straight corridor tubes with curvilinear tubes allowed for a certain design intelligence to become apparent.

07Wilshire Blvd can be viewed as a cultural spine that runs from the heart of downtown Los Angeles to the beaches of the Pacific Ocean. An analysis of the various neighborhoods that make up the Wilshire Corridor helps us bring a better understanding of our relationship to our surroundings. Cross examining a section of Wilshire suggests that the street is a meeting of scale. There are different variables that affect the perception of an individual as they experience Wilshire Blvd, speed and scale. The variables of speed and scale are different whether an individual is in a moving vehicle where the experience more resembles a moving picture, while a pedestrian views portions of Wilshire as still frames. These two varying factors allow for an individual not only experience Wilshire differently but also how one experiences and perceives a
building along the street. In the case of the Westlake/MacArthur Park Neighborhood, obtaining specific demographics concerning the urban culture of the area was essential. Through the neighborhood study an understanding of a necessity for an affordable shopping opportunity became apparent. The introduction of a Swap Meet in a central location for street food and clothing vendors to converge would result in a new cultural node on the Wilshire grid. A neighborhood council office was also introduced along with a bus stop that would act as a main circulation artery to the site creating an area of multi functional use. The experience of the building was meant to be conceived from the movement up and down Wilshire created through the repetitious behavior between Swap Meet and Civic Functions much like one would view a Zoetrope.

The Spatial Apparatus derived from an investigative process of modules and how each unit interacts with one another within a field condition. The beginning investigations of the module resulted in a two sided component which utilized creasing to transform a 2 dimensional piece into one with a 3rd dimension. Through various paper prototyping, the characteristics and the behavior of the module began to become evident as it was aggregated.
The goal of the project was to apply parametric qualities which would result in variances throughout the field. Ultimately the final configuration was a full scale installation located in the courtyard of the USC Architecture building where students and faculty could interact and experience the apparatus. Each component of the installation was digitally fabricated to maintain accuracy in each unique piece of the project.

19The FIDM annex is seen as a project that will seek to create a connection between downtown Los Angeles and the fashion district. By creating a new cultural node in the landscape it will draw individuals to dwell in the space and experience the notion of fashion. Through various ideas and concepts the space is optimized for use by the public and encouraged. The lifting of the architectural volume and creating the urban space underneath allows the more private functions to occur above the urban park.
The attempt is to limit the number of physical connections between the ground plane and the lofted structure, only where necessary for vertical circulation cores, and infrastructural systems that require the re-connection to the ground. The overall primary exoskeleton was conceived from the idea of Lace textiles and its effects of patterning, revealance, structure, and dematerialization. The ornate structure was derived from explorations and investigations of lace patterns and their overall effect to the viewing individual.

29The development of the Performative Structure utilizes the characteristics of various types of branching and weaving found both in nature as well as the built environment. Weaving by definition means to produce by elaborately combining elements to unite in a coherent whole through means of intertwining, while branching refers to the extension of a secondary element stemming from a main axis. Both of these terms carry with them unique characteristics that allow them to be found throughout the natural world. One aspect that weave and branch have in common is the lattice network that
becomes apparent, when found in a natural setting. The goal of the Performative Structure was to design a pavilion that would mimic branching and weaving growth, based on increasing solar gains impacting various sides of a site at various times of the day. Utilizing parametric generative modeling the branching structure is coded to aggregate in the direction that would provide the maximum amount of shade during the warmest times of the day and more sunlight during coldest. Just like in nature, the pavilion structure achieves shade and light through the various densities of layered branching members.

This has created a fascination of the voyeuristic condition of how that very talent is viewed. Derived from the conceptual premise of “revealance”

Through these deformations in the facade, particular aspects of the program are accentuated and displayed for the viewing public, blurring the line between public and private, the world of media and reality.

MOCA los angeles:new cultural epicenterSpring 2011Through an analysis of Grand Avenue on Bunker Hill has lead to the conclusion that the area is in desperate need of a plan of action to help activate the surrounding area. Over the course of its multiple massive development changes, Bunker Hill has now been established as a cultural center that has no activity, only frequently visited by the individuals who work within the surrounding office towers in the area.
41Utilizing MOCA as a vehicle to begin to bring life back to the area that seems almost inaccessible at times. Through the evolution of the art museum, and the high art society of Los Angeles, has proven that much of the art world is revered as elite and exclusive. The new MOCA Design aims to dismantle this mentality and pop the elite bubble that has been allowed to suck the life out of the Bunker Hill area and return the art and the space back to the people.

The treatment of sound and how it affects the production of a music is greatly impacted by the methods of isolation, diffusion, and absorption. The design of the acoustical treatment for the Ballard Mine, a music studio in the heart of the old Ballard neighborhood, utilized the three methods of treating sound. The layout of the deep pockets allows for the sound to enter into the diffuser and prevent it from reverberating back to the source. This allows for a cleaner more authentic sound for recording live sessions.

While collaborating with The Ballard Mine, a need to create an iconography for the establishment was evident. The underground music scene that developed over the years the studio was operating helped shape the type of graphics that were designed. The message of a truly underground experience captures the essence of the idea of no mass advertising. Through this concept, merchandise designs like plain figure ground maps and surrounding landmarks would reveal the studio location without advertising an actual address.
