COVER STORY

Only a few decades ago, advanced com-posite materials were little more than an idealistic dream, but today they have become an essential ingredient in

cutting edge technology, enhancing products in the aerospace and motor racing industries with reduced weight, higher strength and better rigidity.

“We simply could not continue to produce cements with conven-tional technologies that generate large amounts of carbon dioxide emissions, while we have the ability to harness more techno-logically advanced composite cements that offer significant green advantages,” Grant Neser, AfriSam’s commercial executive says.

“Advanced Composite Cements use by-products from the steel manufacturing and coal fired

power generation industries, combined with chemical activators to enhance the characteristics and performance of traditional Portland cement. These composite cements produce concrete with advantages such as improved heat of hydration, reduced porosity, improved strength, durability and resistance to chemical attack.

“For the past two decades we’ve been conduct-ing extensive research and development in the production of these advanced cements, replacing environmentally-unfriendly cement clinker with these by-products and reducing our carbon footprint dramatically,” says Grant.

OutperformsAfriSam has made a considerable investment into extensive research and development into the production of these advanced cements, including upgrades to production facilities. As a result, the company has been able to reduce its clinker fac-

tor from a world average of around 90% to an average of 60%, with reductions in clinker factor to as low as 30% for Eco Building Cement that is especially environmentally friendly and outperforms many com-petitive products in the 32.5MPa to 42.5MPa strength classes in terms of strength development. It also retails at the same price as AfriSam’s premium 32.5 class All-Purpose cement.

AfriSam produces the full range of branded composite cements includ-ing All-Purpose, High-Strength, Eco Building Cement and Rapid Hard Cement, as well as niche blends for customers with specific requirements.

“We will continue to refine our range of Advanced Composite Cements in response to both customer and market requirements, with our finger consistently on the pulse of the latest scientific advances,” concludes Grant.Victor Bouguenon, Afrisam, Tel: (011) 670-5520, www.afrisam.com

Technology for TomorrowAfriSam’s Advanced Composite Cement is positioned to leave a legacy in the construction sector in

Africa, based on its significantly lower carbon footprint and superior performance, the notably-improved workability, durability and lower permeability, which it provides in concrete and mortars.

PRACTICE PROFILE

When “Architect & Specificator” meet the team at Evolve Architects, their first words to us are: “We’re all about the science of design.” A small, up-and-

coming firm with big goals and great horizons, the group consists of three dynamic principals: Anja Williams who specialises in lodges and recreational design; Nick Brits, whose forté is eco-architecture; and Kevin Els, who works on environmentally friendly upmarket residential, commercial and industrial projects.

Tough competition“Our work can generally be described as contempo-rary post-modern. In general, we like to stick to a vernacular style. However, when it comes to com-

Architecture is a constantly evolving art; whether it’s adapting to meet changing social needs, environmental influences or the requirements of clients, building

design is never static.

peting in a tough industry, our motto for success is ‘Guide the client and give them what they want’,” Kevin grins. Having said this, the group has some strong beliefs about de-sign integrity. “We’ll never allow ourselves to be forced into a mould, for example ‘Boere Tuscan’. Although the brief will influence much of what we do, it’s important to create architecture that doesn’t date.”

The company carries this philosophy through all Kevin Els

of their work, whether it’s a lodge or a warehouse. “Industrial work deserves attention too,” Kevin continues on his favourite subject. “A warehouse doesn’t need to be a box…it should have its own uniqueness and identity.” He recently applied this approach to the office of a structural engineering firm with great success.

“In many instances, industrial facilities will have more than one purpose, for instance, we worked on a facility for SA Breweries which was not only industrial, but also served as a visitors’ centre, so both had to be factored into the design with a very unique design element.”

Green technologyNick is equally passionate about his work. “Green products are getting more technologically ad-vanced,” he tells us, describing some of his work on a number of eco-estates. “SANS is forcing this, but clients are demanding it too.” An example is

the recent Royal Alfred estate which required that each household be capable of harvesting 10 000 litres of water.

“SANS regulations are great,” Nick continues, “but this is going to be difficult to implement in South Africa. Often the architects and builders are blamed, but in many instances it starts at the approval phase. We struggle to get approval from municipalities for many eco options...it’s very time consuming.”

Anja agrees at this point, citing a number of effec-tive solutions that never make it into the design. “Sewage systems are a big issue,” she tells us. “Many suburbs are already overloaded in terms of infrastructure, and it would be very useful to

We had to consider the external conditions: wind direction, the elements, bugs!

incorporate alternate forms of sewage disposal into design, for instance sewage compacting systems. But the municipalities won’t let us. Straw houses are another example. You just won’t get approval to build them in towns.”All three agree that while there is a focus on architects to learn the new regulations, it is also neces-sary that the people responsible for passing plans understand the rules. However, they add that things are improving rapidly in spite of this setback. “Passive design can make

a big difference in terms of savings,” continues Nick. “This is where a well-designed building has such an advantage over one which is not. Architect-designed structures work better because we’re trained to incorporate good passive design from the start.”

Kevin goes on to explain that incorporating benefi-cial design principles is part of the company ethos. “In every project we do, we feel obliged to teach our clients about the benefits of good design,” he

says. “From a local perspective, the first step is to encourage clients to take advantage of our climate. We live in a country where we should encourage outside spaces to form part of our homes, but our homes don’t always consider our climate. We should try to bring the outside in.”

Bug alertThis practice is more easily embraced by clients in the hospitality industry, specifically in the de-sign of lodges and resorts. “We really get to flex our creative muscles with these projects,” smiles Anja. “Of course, it’s not as simple as it looks. For instance, when we recently designed a lodge with an open/outside dining room, we had to consider the external conditions: wind direction, the ele-ments, bugs!”

Attention to these seemingly minor details is what makes a successful project and it’s winning the company a fair amount of attention, notably in the form of new assignments. “We’re working on a commercial project in Braamfontein which we hope will be a catalyst for change in the area,” says Kevin. “We’ve been awarded a number of ‘mini casinos’ as well as some significant proj-

ects in other countries. There’s a big project on the cards in Windhoek – a job like this is every architect’s dream!”

There’s also a complete design for a bushveld eco-estate, which promises to have the whole team in their element. “We’re handling every aspect including the game management,” says Nick enthusiastically. “It’s really exciting because it will combine all our specialities in one project.”

Obviously the firm is not at a loss for work, however they still manage to find time for pro bono tasks, such as churches, community halls and arts and crafts centres. Even here they implement their design philosophies. “We don’t want to design buildings that look like they’re out of a particular time period, such as the ‘70s or ‘80s. Each site is special and should be given the treatment it deserves,” Kevin ends off.

Justification?Just as a matter of interest, and with reference to your article in “Architect & Specificator” of September/October 2011 regarding 3D printing, you may be interested in a company called Coolcomponents (www.coolcomponents.co.uk) who advertise 3D printers for 1999.00 Pounds. This is consider-ably cheaper than the estimated R300 000.00 Indicated in your article. Just thought I’d let you know.Regards, Leon Barnard

Objet response to Leon Barnard of DBM Architects (the team at “Architect & Specificator” think Object could teach politicians a thing or two about how to not answer a question) Objet appreciates the fact that he took the time to read the article and to forward his comments. As with all products, there is generally a variety of options available in the general marketplace.

We would always advise a user to research the market and compare similar items .The purchasing decision should be made on a 3D printer that best suits requirements in terms of quality, versatility, throughput, materials, volume, proven track record and backup services available in the region.

INSULATION

MD Mark Stannard of Thermguard who produced the origi-nal cellulose insula-

tion in South Africa and has been manufacturing the product for 26 years, says research by CIMA (www.cellulose.org)shows that recycled newsprint (cellulose fibre) has the lowest estimated ‘embodied energy’ of any insula-tion product. ‘Embodied energy’ is the energy required to produce and transport materials.

“Cellulose also has the largest amount of recycled content, up to 72% recycled newsprint. It uses less energy than other manufacturing processes for insulation products, for both heat and sound applications,” adds Mark.

Waste newsprint “While any insulation is better than none, we believe strongly that the choice of paper cellulose is greener than others. Because large amounts

Double WhammyThere is growing awareness of the significant impact on the environment in selecting shredded recycled newsprint (cellulose fibre) for ceiling insulation. It will prevent up to up to 89% of the heat generated in the building from escaping upwards through the ceiling. The recycled newspaper is shredded and treated with (cellulose) harmless household chemicals as a fire retardant that are about as toxic as table salt but

are insect and rodent resistant.

of discarded newspaper end up on landfill sites, using waste paper to produce cellulose insulation diverts waste from landfills,” says Mark. “Cellulose insulation also prevents the release of ‘greenhouse’ gases such as CO2 and methane which are released when newspaper decomposes in landfills.”

This newsprint which would have produced CO2 and methane gases is now turned into insulation which, in turn, saves the burning of fossil fuels in power stations which will in turn give off CO2. Thus cellulose fibre insulation has a “Double Green Effect.”

“The key to manufacturing the product is to ensure that the chemicals are added to the newsprint ac-curately and consistently. If the insulation contains the incorrect mix of chemicals it could lead to a potentially devastating fire in the roof, a scenario that actually happened in Great Britain,” Mark warns.

us. “It’s there now to do research and compare its energy efficiency performance with other building methods such as steel frame, brick, etc.

Best performance“The report proved that ours offers the best performance – it’s the only alternative housing system approved by the department’s stringent tests on features such as fire resistance and water permeability. Everyone dreams of capturing the low-cost market, but there is huge scope in the upper segment. EPS is the perfect answer to the problems of the high-end market, for buildings in the R4-5 million range. Actually, in my opinion, it’s perfect for everybody, but the market hasn’t taken to it yet.”

The chief stumbling block is that builders are resis-tant to the material, for a variety of reasons. In the lower segments, homeowners see EPS as a cheap substitute for bricks and mortar, and don’t want to feel that they’re getting the raw end of the deal.

The New Holy GrailWith many seeing the low-cost housing market as the Holy Grail of the construction industry, not a lot of attention is

being paid to new technology in the other sectors.

FINDINGS, SPECS & REGS

Hans Schefferlie, executive director of AAAMSA, tells “Architect & Specificator” that the association has been involved in the development of an effective solution

to the issues related to high-end construction, although most of the principles can be applied to any type of structure. “We built a house out of EPS (expanded polystyrene) for the CSIR,” he tells

Do you know?Downlights with thermal insulation over the top can present a potential fire hazard. As lights heat up, they burn the insulation material.

EPS was used when renovating the two-hundred-year-old Hope of Constantia House in the Constantia Valley

Unsuitable material? On the other hand, the upmarket sector has little interest in building with what they consider to be an unsuitable material.

Even its extensive energy-saving properties are rejected by ‘greenies’, who consider polystyrene to be harmful to the environment. In fact, experts say that the opposite is true: EPS is an environmentally-friendly and safe building material to use, with enhanced thermal insulation properties.

Mechano setThe EPSASA house at the CSIR has a 40m2 foot-print and is made up largely from hollow expanded polystyrene blocks, bolted together in segments that make for easy construction. “It comes in a large ‘Mechano set’ that you put together in big blocks held together in a frame,” Hans explains. The material’s excellent thermal efficiency minimises the need for electrical heaters, air conditioners, furnaces and open fires.

The CSIR report noted that the EPSASA house requires an annual heating and cooling load of 1.73GJ compared with 19.03 GJ of a conventional RDP house.

Success storiesMeanwhile, some owners are more prepared to take the leap, as was the case in the recent upgrade of the ‘Hope of Constantia’, a two-century old house in the Constantia Valley in the Western Cape. When Mike Brain decided to renovate the family home, he chose EPS as an insulating material for numerous reasons including its durability, excellent insulation properties, flexibility, versatility and ease of transporting and installation.

The renovation was subject to stringent regulations set out by the South African Heritage Resources Agency, which Mike and his wife have always worked to meet, if not exceed when implement-ing upgrades.

“We had a very small space in which to work; there

Hans says:There is also a lot of misconception in the industry regarding persons who may produce a rational design at will. A Clause in place in legislation since 2008 changes these parameters.

Page 16: Architect&Specificator: Mar/Apr2012

is just 80mm between the ceiling and the roof. By choosing 75mm thick EPS we could maximise the available space and ensure lowest possible thermal conductivity. From a practical and logistical perspective, we needed to use a material which could be installed from below and pushed into the void. The rigid yet flexible nature of EPS meant we could push the sheets into the ceil-ing and even cut them to fit more tricky spaces,” says Mike.

The family is delighted with the outcome of the project and plans to use the material in future upgrades, which comes as no surprise to Hans. “Contrary to popular belief, EPS is not a cheap option. In fact, it may initially appear pricier than other materials. However its long-term benefits make it a highly economical and effective choice.”

We have started local production of all concrete admixtures, as well as production of grinding aids utilised during the milling of cement,” Antony

tells “Architect & Specificator”.

Cementing relationships“Our big drive is to focus on added value, specifically to our concrete clients,” he continues, explaining that products are being designed, and concrete mixes refined to allow the use of less cement for better cost efficiency, while the inclusion of extenders and recycled aggregates minimises the environmental impact. “The end result is a concrete that is not only more cost-effective, but also has a lower carbon footprint, which is where my real interest lies,” he smiles.

“In the area of cement grinding, we are the tech-nological leaders in product and market develop-ment. We focus on purpose-designed solutions, developed together with our clients, as well as innovative ways to reduce the power consump-tion for cement production, as well as increased extender use. The more reactivity our performance enhancers can generate within the cement, the more extender volume can be added. This reduces the carbon footprint of the final cement by effectively diluting the ’high energy’ ingredient, while not taking away from the desired performance of the cement,” he explains.

The same principle is being applied to their other product offerings in a bid to provide clients with a full range of green options. “We’re aiming to be a one-stop shop for green concrete and building,” Antony says. “We also offer low VOC waterproofing and flooring products, making us a top to bottom supplier to the industry.”

All steamed upIn addition to refining the products, the company is exploring solutions to the precast construction process in a bid to reduce environmental impact. “Many companies are still steam-curing concrete,” he explains. “We’re working on ways to reduce the amount of energy needed for this process, as well as lowering vibrating and stripping times. We do

this through collaborative mix designs with clients and the use of our additives in our NRG product range.

The improvements haven’t been accidental. Antony tells us that 5% of Mapei’s global turnover is invested back into research and development, carried out in the 18 R&D centres across the globe. Of this investment, 70% is focussed on developing eco sustainable and environmen-tally friendly products for the construction market. “Our flooring, roofing and even carpet glues are safe for indoor use, and a wide range of our products are LEED certified” he assures us. Few competitors are able to boast the same level consistency throughout their product ranges.

Antony Offenberg, Mapei SA, Email: [email protected],Website. www.mapei.co.za

When it comes to technology, every field has periods of advancement; this is usually expected from areas involving rapidly evolving technology. Concrete, however, tends to

be viewed as a fairly static arena. This is not the case, we learn, during a conversation with Antony Offenberg, Product

Manager: Admixtures at Mapei South Africa.

article would need to be scrutinised before going to press. In addition, our request for a portrait of our interview subject was quickly shot down. This is not unusual either, we’re often denied pics of our interviewees; some are shy, some are ugly, some are in witness relocation programmes. And let’s face it, some execs just don’t know how to behave in front of a camera – like the guy who beamed broadly as we snapped off shots of him and his toothbrush tucked neatly in his top pocket.

The factsBut back to the facts: after the lecture, there fol-lowed a lengthy discourse on the merits of the product in question. It turned out to be vastly more expensive than anything similar on the market, but this was apparently justified by a string of clever mechanisms and the use of the most ridiculously over-priced materials available. The supplier was unconcerned about the fact that 90% of the market would never be able to cover the cost of his range; if they didn’t have the budget they weren’t worthy of his attention.

Finally, after two hours of uninspired babble about upper LSMs and ‘plans going forward’, we left with a bundle of glossy brochures and a wad of scrawled notes detailing a range of items that we could have learned more about by browsing the internet. And yet there was still the vague feeling that the meeting should’ve taken place in a dark alley. Or on a secluded bench in some US park while we fed the ducks as dark-suited agents scanned the

So it was a novel experience to be treated with great suspicion when the “Architect & Specificator” team recently arrived to speak to a local supplier of a high-end imported

product.

Screening processIt had taken months to pin down the right inter-view subject, so our arrival was hardly a bolt from the blue.

But there’s nothing like the promise of a good story to get a writer’s attention, so we waited in the ‘bored’ room while calls were made, checks were run and secret service strings were pulled to confirm our identity; in other words, they phoned our office. More minutes ticked by as we were lectured on the need for a more professional approach, having arrived without the requisite business card. We didn’t even know the secret handshake, for Pete’s sake. Who’s to say we weren’t from the opposi-tion, sent to ferret out covert marketing plans or top security technical information?

We may even be conducting an exposé on wheel-ings and dealings in the industry, so of course our

The complexity of the design was a very uncertain and worrying factor, and the cause of many sleepless nights. At that stage we have not had done anything yet

which resembles the geometrical complexity of this building. We were always in doubt if our plans/

schemes/proposals at design stage would prove to be practical and buildable during the construc-tion phase.”

Located outside Port Louis (in the Ebene area), the oval, 10-storey building includes open plan offices, auditoria, a canteen and ancillary spaces, all of which cover about 10 000m² of façade glazing and cladding. The carefully-chosen orientation ensures that the façades face due north and south with generous overhanging sunscreens which virtually eliminate all direct solar gains.

More complexJoe adds that the story could have been a lot more complex if it hadn’t been for the comprehensive design specs of Arup, the project’s façade engineer.

It’s not often that companies have an opportunity to work on projects which push design boundaries and earn international recognition. Joe Marais at Gestyn & Horak

talks about the Mauritius Commercial Bank with the pride of someone who’s had the privilege. “We negotiated

the project, sent our first estimates in 2007, moved to Mauritius in 2010 and completed the job in 2011,” he tells

“Architect & Specificator” by way of introduction.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Arup acted as the project manager and multidis-ciplinary engineering consultant providing a full range of services from offices internationally.

“The design was crucial to this project; all aspects of the façade installation hinged on it,” Joe continues. While he emphasises that this is not unusual, in the case of the Mauritius Commercial Bank, the geometric complexity made a buildable design vital to the success of the installation.

Weather warning“The environment is cyclonic,” he explains. “It’s humid, hot, subtropical and you’re dealing with the possibility of high wind speeds. Luckily there were no cyclones during construction or the site

would have been wiped clean,” he chuckles wryly.

“From a systems perspective it wasn’t much dif-ferent from what you would find elsewhere; it was primarily a beefed up version of what you’d design for in Jo’burg. The design wind load is for instance four to five times higher than what you would cater for in Jo’burg. Obviously this had an impact on costing. The geometry of the building, however, is out of the ordinary.

“Construction-wise, the real challenge came in dealing with the oval shape of the building. All the fixing and set out points on the perimeter of the building were individually surveyed to match a designed three-dimensional reference point.

None of the conventional survey and setting out tools like chalk lines, plumb bobs, straight edges, spirit levels, dumpy levels or theodolites were of any practical use. The only relatively ‘easy’ portion of the installation was the vertical core area of the glazed façade – on the north and south elevations,” Joe elaborates.

“The buildability of these types of structures is nowa-days only possible with the extensive use of CAD tech-niques and advanced survey-ing equipment. Technological assistance was the only op-tion because the design was inaccuracy-intolerant. Our experience on this building was that everybody involved really scrutinised the accu-racy of the sight lines on the perimeter of the building and specifically the equal and smooth transition between cladding panels. On a curve you’ll visually pick up errors very easily, while on a box-shaped building you have a bit more leeway.”

Made to measureNothing on the external façade of the job was mea-sured on site. Of course, this isn’t a new concept in the curtainwall industry. “Many people imagine someone walking around with a tape measure, but in most cases it’s all done off-site and installed to fit. Again, you have to rely on the design to ensure that everything fits in place. The curtainwall components were constructed months in advance, so the design had to provide measurements and tolerances that would ensure a perfect fit.”

An additional component came in the form of

energy efficiency requirements. “The louvres are essentially ‘sunscreens’ for solar control and energy efficiencys,” explains Joe. “They also provide a walkway for maintenance. The building includes doors at each level onto these walkways, and the structures need to support scaffolding when nec-essary so that it’s possible to replace glass, etc. We also incorporated safety hooks into the curtain wall units for this purpose.”

Wear sunscreenThe louvre installation was factory-prepared in kit form and then assembled in Mauritius. It was fixed onto the curtainwall units in line with the hook plates and curtain wall brackets, onto the structure that carries the whole installation. This was all assembled on the floor and then fitted into place, which is usually the case in such structures. The aluminium profiles required were especially designed for the purpose, which included a grooved surface to allow people to walk on it safely. Mean-while, the almost blank east-west façades further reduce solar gain caused by low angle morning and afternoon sun.

In spite of the challenges and intricacies, the final outcome has achieved far-reaching recognition. “The building has become an icon in Mauritius,” concludes Joe. A sure sign of a successful project.

buildings are designed to restrict the inflow of solar heat during the warmer months by incorporating efficient solar controlling glasses with optimum solar heat gain coefficients. ”

Important considerationThe new SANS 204 recommendations highlight the significance of fenestration’s insulation properties as a whole. Windows are considered to be primary sources of heat gain and heat loss due to their characteristic transparency. Selecting the most suitable glass thus requires an understanding of the solar performance of particular glass products.

In order to assist in making the correct choice of glass, PFG’s glass products have been certified and listed on the International Glass Data Base that is controlled by the National Fenestration Rating Council in the USA. Also, because its products are produced locally, users benefit from having a lower carbon footprint – an important consideration for green buildings.

Another consideration is the availability of technical back-up from the glass supplier, coupled with the reality of replacements over time. “While other local and imported laminated products may offer similar

Tailored Energy- Efficient Glass Solutions

Buildings designed for London or New York will not have the same glass configuration as buildings in Johannesburg, or Cape Town and Durban. The Westfield London Shopping Centre, with its large expanses of clear glass would be like a ‘hothouse’ if it was built in South Africa. Similarly, the specialised solar controlling glass skylights incorporated

in the new Nicolway Bryanston Shopping Centre would be over-specified if this building was situated in Hamburg,

Germany. Local knowledge and expertise are thus critical when specifying the right glass for specific climatic

conditions.

Understanding the effect that climatic conditions have on buildings is crucial when considering energy efficiency, in-terior comfort conditions and aesthetic

appeal,” Bob van Schelt, sales and marketing director for PFG, Southern Africa’s leading glass manufacturer tells “Architect & Specificator”. “In Europe and other cold climate regions, buildings are generally designed to allow solar heat to enter through the window and to then remain within the building envelope for most of the year. However, in warm climatic regions such as Southern Africa,

Page 29: Architect&Specificator: Mar/Apr2012

benefits, the availability of local technical support and local knowledge should not be overlooked.” Bob maintains. “As the leading manufacturer of laminated glass in SA, PFG’s products comply with the national building, safety and recently introduced energy efficiency regulations. We have a suite of performance products that design professionals can choose from to meet their specifications, and their customers’ requirements in terms of light transmission, solar heat elimination, cooling and heating considerations for the occupants, thermal insulation, UV radiation, sound control, privacy, safety, security and aesthetics.

Reward the ownersEnergy efficient glasses in the South African context serve mainly to reduce solar heat gains and have a direct bearing on reductions in cooling loads. They therefore contribute to the overall energy ef-ficiency of a building development, whether in the design stage of new buildings or in the planning of building refurbishments or energy efficiency upgrades. If required, PFG’s range of SolarVue and Solarshield products, can be combined with low emissivity glass, which improves the thermal

insulation properties of the glazing system, par-ticularly during cold winter months.

The Riverwalk Office Park development in Preto-ria East is an example of the incorporation of an energy efficient glass – SolarVue HL Neutral Low E – in a new, external façade glazing design that will reward the owners with substantial savings in energy costs over the lifetime of the building, and offer comfortable working conditions to its occupants.

Another advantage of the Intruderprufe range of high performance laminated glass products is that PFG has expanded its product range by including all configurations to a maximum sheet size of 3 660mm x 2 440mm, allowing greater utilisation of glass modules and flexibility of architectural design freedom.

A lso likely to spur industry growth is the recent announcement of the expansion in infrastructure investment, one of the central priorities of the 2012 budget. A

massive nationwide infrastructure development drive was announced in President Jacob Zuma’s State of the Nation Address, promising to boost the level of economy and creating job opportuni-ties nationwide.

The Star Interbuild Africa exhibition is poised to support industry growth, creating an enabling environment for business networking, capital equipment purchases and business development.

Forge relationshipsCo-located with Glass Expo Africa, EcoAfribuild, Plumbdrain Africa, Current Africa and Frigair, the “shows offer the perfect opportunity to compare products and services, plan future capital equip-ment purchases and view the latest technology and industry trends,” says Gary Corin, managing director at Specialised Exhibitions, organisers of the show.

“At previous shows, there was extensive network-ing between local businesses to assess potential synergies and partnerships, and visiting interna-tional companies were keen to forge local business relationships,” Gary states.

The 2010 trade shows attracted 8,886 visitors collectively, an increase of 12.7% over the previous show, which was a great feat for the building and construction industry at a time when it was bear-ing the negative impact of the economic downturn. Visitors came from across the African continent as well as from Europe, Asia and Australia. The majority of visitors were top decision-makers from building-related industries.

High qualitySays Gary, “Our visitors were of a high quality and included company owners, senior executives, architects, quantity surveyors, procurement di-rectors, specifiers, buyers, production managers, marketing managers and government representa-tives from within the collective industries. We also had a good international representation, especially from Africa, which is where we placed a high marketing drive for 2010 and will continue to do this year.”

This year’s show will encompass favourites such as bathrooms, kitchens, doors, windows, paint, flooring, walling, roofing, insulation, tiling, electri-cal, lighting, air-conditioning, paving, reinforcing, bricks, cement, concrete, scaffolding, plant hire and equipment, civil engineering equipment, affordable housing products and all aspects of the hardware and allied products industries, as well as wood-working, processing and furniture manufacturing.

Glass ExpoGlass Expo Africa will put the spotlight on a broad range of glass and aluminium products, embracing all aspects of the glass and aluminium window industries. “From 2012 onwards the introduction of a plethora of National Building Regulations will

positively affect players in this market, potentially growing markets,” explains Roz Nash, exhibition manager for Interbuild Africa and Glass Expo Africa.

“Growth will be sustained by regular updates of Regulation XA (Energy Usage) which will increase the required R and U values of products manufac-tured and installed,” she says. “Glass Expo Africa will play a role in highlighting these regulations and the effect they will have.”

Poised for GrowthTrading conditions have been tough over the past couple of years but indications are that confidence is returning.

Although still relatively slow, there are many more opportunities surfacing and forecasts are that beyond 2012

growth will pick up.

WALLS & FLOORS

In electronics manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, ordnance

manufacture and storage areas, electrostatic discharge (ESD) incidents can often cause material, component or

system failures, which may prove costly and perhaps even dangerous.

Most types of vinyl flooring claim to be anti-static. This means that they do not contribute towards the build up of static electricity in the human body.

They also do not drain the static charge already built up.

An ESD range has been specifically engineered to combat this problem at source, by facilitating a uniform flow of static electricity directly to a ground point. The range covers all major applications, and includes static dissipative (SD), electrostatic

So what is the difference?Static dissipative (SD) floorcoverings are chemi-cally treated to discharge static electricity and must be used in a controlled environment with a relative humidity of above 40 %. Typical areas of discharge use would be operating theatres, computer areas and instrument control rooms.

Electrostatic conductive (EC) floorcoverings contain carbon and discharge static electricity more quickly and can be used in less controlled environs. In controlled environments they would be used in sensitive electrical and assembly areas as well as explosive manufacturing areas.

It stands to reason that the electrically conduc-tive floorcovering will drain the static charge more quickly than an electrically dissipative floorcovering as it has lower resistance to earth.

canteen and office areas. The flooring area in-stalled exceeded 300m².

The installation process follows the following steps:

• Assess and test raw floor for problems that could affect the flooring installation such as moisture, cracks, expansion joints and current floor coverings etc

• Determine type of floor preparation, scabbling, sand blasting, primers and screeds to use.

• Affix a conductive grid. There is a different grid layout for SD and EC installations

• Lay vinyl sheeting or tiles using conductive adhesives

• Floor testing and issuing of a ESD floor installed compliance certificate.

Electrostatic conductive and dissipative floorcover-ings are usually laid on a cement subfloor. Concrete is a poor conductor of electricity, so this type of floorcovering needs to be laid using a conductive adhesive and earthed in order to drain the discharge.

Aluminium or copper tape is laid in the adhesive under the floorcovering and taken to two earth points in case one fails. For larger areas, one earth point is allowed for every 20m2.

The floorcoverings are available in both sheet and tile form. The tile sizes are 608mm x 608mm in order to accommodate raised access floors. Raised access floors are usually made of steel, so installers should ensure that the legs are earthed. A conduc-

The largest Awadukt Thermo ground-air heat exchanger system has been installed in Scotland at the newly refurbished and extended Banff and Buchan College in Fraserburgh.

The Rehau system draws air from out-side at a rate of 16000m³/hr through a 42m x 30m grid of Awadukt Thermo polypropylene pipework, 1.5m below the playing fields of the college. This allows optimal heat transfer to take place between the ground and the air, resulting in the air being warmed by up to 9ºC in winter and cooled by as

much as 14ºC in summer by the time it reaches the air handling unit (AHU).

This will have a significant impact on the energy loading of the AHU and will eliminate the requirement for refrigerant-based mechanical cooling to counter the heat gain in the building generated by high occupancy levels and large amounts of glazing, particularly in the atrium.

Senior mechanical engineer, Alan Gibb from KJ Tait Engineers says, “On a sunny summer day when the external ambient temperature could be as high

as 25ºC, the sys-tem will deliver air to cool the atrium which has been pre-cooled by the ground- air heat ex-changer to around 10-11ºC using minimal amounts of energy and with almost zero run-ning costs. For a bui lding which has no mechanical

cooling, this will be hugely rewarding.”

KJ Tait will be monitoring the tempera-ture of the air entering the air handling unit via BMS readings as it evaluates the performance and payback of the Rehau Awadukt Thermo system over its first year in operation.

As one of the former members of the executive council of Aaamsa, Stuart has reestablished his company in South Africa and plans to put his international experience to good use in an advisory capacity. The company will also introduce a host of advanced new aluminium, glazing and architecture materials into South Africa backed by technical expertise to ensure the right product is used for the application at hand.

“Working in Dubai in the peak of its development gave me the opportunity to explore new technologies and work with architects and suppliers to find solutions to design and construction problems.

Bloemfontein will soon boast an exciting new shopping experience when the first Makro store in the Free State province opens its doors in October 2012. The new store, to be developed by The Moolman Group, will be located on the western side of Bloemfontein, at the junction of the N8 towards Kimberley and the N1 freeway. Approximately 5km from the Bloemfontein CBD and 4km from Langehoven Park the site offers excellent exposure, easy access from Bloemfontein and the surrounding areas, while remaining in close proximity to all amenities in the city.

On completion of the development the building, with a GLA of 17 049m2, will comprise a typical Makro store layout, incorporating retail warehousing space, an open floor or trading area, a separate liquor store and butchery with chillers, and various other specialty departments, including technology, multi-media, outdoor and an office supplies component.

Although this exciting development is the fifth Makro development being undertaken by The Moolman Group, it marks the beginning of a notable new partnership between this developer and Nedbank Corporate Property Finance, which is providing the R170-million finance required for the completion of the project.

Ken Reynolds, regional executive: Nedbank Corporate Property Finance, Gauteng notes that the demand for a Makro trading store in the area is strong. "While the area does host a two other bulk retail stores as well as a local mall, Makro offers a unique value proposition. Developed as a freestanding building located on the crossing between two major national highways, and featuring an impressive 840 open parking bays, the retailer is

poised to become a destination centre in its own right, drawing shoppers not only from Bloemfontein, but also from all over the province and from neighbouring Lesotho."

A protracted legal battle between Pelican Systems and Lafarge Gypsum SA, which was a 50% shareholder, has finally been settled. The settlement agreement signed on 29 February 2012 dissolves the joint venture and restores 100% ownership to the founder of Pelican Systems, Rodney Gould.

From 1 March 2012 Pelican Systems was again 100% owned by the Gould family through Pelican Group.

In September 1999, Pelican Systems concluded a joint venture deal with Macsteel Interior Systems, a subsidiary of the steel giant Macsteel. This subsidiary was purchased by Lafarge Gypsum SA in 2004, and so Pelican Systems and Lafarge Gypsum became joint venture partners.

“Disagreement between the shareholders began as far back as

2008 and resulted in a number of court cases. As a result the past four years have been extremely difficult and Pelican Systems has lost ground in the market largely due to the Lafarge range of products being uncompetitive in the KZN market,” says Pelican Systems GM, Denise Gould.

In June last year, after Lafarge Gypsum SA closed its account, Pelican Systems sourced new supply lines and now has control of their Jumbo brand of plasterboards as well as a number of new exclusive brands which has given Pelican Systems back their edge in the market.

Pelican Systems having closed their export division in 2005, due to the joint venture, was also limited to the KZN region and will now once again be able to trade both nationally and internationally.

Hein Woolfaardt Architects specified Sika’s internationally approved products when new roofing had to be installed at Sand and Sea, an apartment block situated across the road from the Atlantic Ocean in Blouberg, north of Cape Town. The existing roof of Sand and Sea, coated with old bituminous torch-on and silver paint, had incorrect falls resulting in ponding and leaking. De Vos Paxton Engineers were contracted to remove the old torch-on plus the existing screed and to replace it with new, correctly falling screed, covering an area of 1000m2.

Joints in the new screed were sealed with Sikaflex-11FC, a one-part, moisture-curing elastic sealant and multipurpose adhesive providing excellent weather and ageing resistance.

The screed was then coated with Sika

Concrete Primer. Sika Reemat was first rolled into the base coat Sikalastic-602BR (@1.4kg/m2), a cold-applied, seamless and fully bonded, highly elastic polyurethane membrane, prior to application on all the intricate areas of the roof. This fast-curing, crack-bridging membrane rapidly becomes resistant to rain damage and is highly root resis-tant. The base coat was covered with two applications; grey first, followed by a layer of white Sikalastic-621TC (@1.2kg/m2), a highly durable, UV stable, versatile and easily applied liquid waterproofing topcoat. This one-component, moisture-triggered, polyurethane membrane is ideal for roofs displaying complex areas of detail and geometry, where accessibility is limited.

News & ViewsConceptual brief for 2012 student competitionThe recently launched 2012 PG Bison 1.618 Competition brief is a great opportunity for students to test their creative mettle. The challenge is for the entrants to recommend not only the structure’s style, but its location too.

Developed in consultation with the IID, and with expert assistance from Adrian Whines (owner of Brand DNA, the boutique design and branding agency based in Melville), the brief begins with the phrase: Instinct – Invigorate, Revitalise, Energise.

Challenging students to develop a design solution to satisfy a fictional high powered client, the requirements are presented as if based on a hurried meeting with the client and scribbled down in a notebook, complete with doodles and taped-on Polaroid photos.

Of vital importance to this brief is the dynamic relationship between the inside and the outside of the structure. Students will need to carefully consider their creative solutions to impress the judging panel. Creative bravery and strong conceptual thinking will be rewarded in the 2012 competition.

The Foschini Group is again partnering with the competition.

The deadline for entries is Friday 17 August 2012 and the brief can be downloaded from the competition website: http://www.1sixoneeight.co.za/brief_entry.htmlPG Bison, 1.SixOneEight, Kerry van Jaarsveld, [email protected], www.pgbison.co.za

In the service of heritageThe Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality has taken an innovative approach to managing its architectural heritage, creating a map-based online register that is in the process of locating, photographing and rating every heritage building in the city of Port Elizabeth (PE).

“The National Heritage Resources Act specifies that permission is needed to modify or demolish any building older than 60 years old, but built environment professionals inside and outside the municipality realised that more information was needed. Not all old buildings are worth preserving, and some much newer buildings deserve heritage status,” says Andre Steyn of Aspire Solutions, the company that developed the mapping software and key systems underlying the register.

Working together with heritage experts from the City of Cape Town as well as two PE Based architectural practices, namely The Matrix and The Workplace, Aspire

Solutions implemented a methodology for rat-ing the heritage value of buildings based on a visual inspection. The group surveyed key areas in the first and second phase of the city.

Armed with hand-held data capture devices that synchronised au-tomatically to the mu-nicipality, architects walked the streets of PE identifying build-ings of heritage value, taking photographs, assigning scores and linking everything to a central map database. “The basic data capture was done on the handheld devices, then the archi-tects could add longer notes back at the office. It proved to be an extremely efficient, user-friendly system,” says Andre.

“This is a great example of how part-nerships between domain experts and

JoJo Tanks recently launched a range of 6 000l underground tanks, an addition to the existing range of urban consumers and to complement the aboveground Slimline range that has a smaller holding capacity.

Underground tanks are the answer when space and accessibility are an issue – especially in an urban environment. They have also become an increasingly popular option for architects and building designers, as an underground water storage system allows for the maximum use of property, more green space and/or parking on a tight commercial site.

Professionally installed, they can be placed under paved light weight traffic areas, driveways, garden beds or lawns providing an eco-friendly and aestheti-cally pleasing solution for rainwater capture and rainwater harvesting.

The new 6 000l underground tanks are available in three colours: grey (for greywater use), black (for black water use) and green (for fresh water and rain water harvesting). Like all other JoJo tanks, the underground tank is manufactured by means of the rotational molding process to produce a one-piece, seamless, watertight tank. The rugged, ribbed design offers superior strength for underground installation and the rib placement provides exceptional structural integrity.

The company emphasises however, that there is a very specific and highly recommended installation procedure for the JoJo underground tank. JoJo Tanks Tel: (013) 262-3021 [email protected]

New Durban Production PlantTAL has expanded its footprint with a new production plant in Durban, launched last year in Springfield Park, central Durban.

As the leading tile adhesive manufacturing company in South Africa and part of Norcros SA, TAL boasts established production plants in Johannesburg and Cape Town and now has a truly national footprint with plants in three of the country’s major centres.

“The new Durban plant offers a number of advantages: it allows us to tap into local raw material suppliers, establish trade relationships with other suppliers and expand our supplier network,” says Norcros KwaZulu-Natal branch manager Andrew Dekker.

In addition to servicing the entire KZN region, the plant will now also strengthen the company’s drive and presence into the export market via the Durban port to the Indian Ocean islands, Reunion, Comoros, Seychelles and Mauritius.

The new plant, which produces construct ion adhesives and chemicals,

will greatly increase the company’s efficiency, ensuring it continues to stay ahead of its competitors. The need to transport material to and from Johannesburg has been significantly reduced, further improving its service levels and reducing its previous carbon footprint.

A Successful

YearThe LiSec Group achieved a 25% increase in sales for the calendar year ended December 31, 2011, noting that “All regions worldwide saw improvements to their business and the company was able to achieve their targeted goals for the year.”

LiSec attributes much of this success to measures which have been taken to streamline the company and adjust to the new market dynamics. Among the measures taken, it reorganised the sales department globally and consolidated its software operations into a new automation group, to achieve synergies and leverage expertise within the company.

The company has also renewed its focus on its core business, which has allowed it to stand out from competitors through all-in-one concepts and integrated automation solutions.

Thanks to its broad portfolio, it is well-positioned for 2012 and increased demand as the world economies slowly emerge from the severe recession which they have faced. “We continue to find tnew solutions in our approach to the market with a strong focus on high quality products and services,” says LiSec CEO Karl Gruber.

“Innovation will continue to be the most important element of our strategy. We will continue to respond to the industry challenges through additional developments which address the needs of our customers,” concludes Karl.

The company also celebrated its 50-year anniversary last year.

KWIKOT'S KWIKPUMP HEAT PUMPSOFFER HOME OWNERS AN ALTERNATIVE TOSOLAR WATER HEATING which is more efficient, cost effective and environmentally friendly.

This alternative trend in water heating works on the reverse principle ofthat of an airconditioner, extracting ambient heat from the atmosphereto heat the refrigerant, which is then pumped into a heat exchangecondenser to heat water in a domestic electric water heater or solar waterheater. The end result is water heated for approximately one third of theelectrical usage of an electric water heater. The free environment energyextracted from the ambient heat, provides approximately 75% of the heatpumps heating energy.

Heat pumps are available for 100lt to 250lt electric water heaters.

The fif th Deutsche Bank Urban Age Award (DBUAA) in Cape Town has received the highest number of applications since its establishment in 2007 (2007 Mumbai 73; 2008 Sao Paulo 133; 2009 Istanbul 87, Mexico City 193; 2012 Cape Town 254).

The submissions reflect the vibrancy and creativity of Cape Town dwellers in facing the social and urban challenges of their city. From a plurality of social and geographical backgrounds, the projects indicate that strong and diverse alliances are being built to improve the urban environment and quality of life. The support of universities, local authorities and government programmes as well as the cooperation of different community organisations has been an important ingredient for the success of the projects.

Besides the large number of submissions, the Cape Town projects are of a general high quality and fall into a diverse

range of categories such as education, culture, environment, sanitation, public space, local economies and social integration. The winner was announced on April 19, 2012 at the Civic Centre, in Cape Town, and will feature in the next issue.

Deutsche Bank’s Alfred Herrhausen Society director Wolfgang Nowak says, “All the projects which applied for the Deutsche Bank Urban Age Award are ambassadors of the good ideas of Cape Town. They make me very optimistic for the future of the city.”

Commenting on the high volume of applications, DBUAA Jury Chair Edgar Pieterse says: “It proves that if government and business truly want to address the burning problems of the city, they simply need to look close enough at what is happening on the ground, and they can find the partners to make a lasting impact.”www.DBUAaward.net

Innovative and Sustainable Design Gyproc, a Saint-Gobain company has announced it will be introducing twelve new products into the market during 2012. The company manufactures lightweight building materials and manufactures energy conserving RhinoBoard for all interior lining applications.

These product introductions form part of Gyproc’s vision to move to become more focused on identifying and meeting the needs of customers. This focus is in line with a drive to do things differently in 2012, encouraging customers to expect more from Gyproc.

“Customers have become acutely aware of value,” explains Gyproc’s marketing GM, Evan Lockhart-Barker. “We acknowledge that times have changed, economic strains are causing customers to consider economical alternatives and it is this shift that has resulted in Gyproc’s revised approach to take advantage of the opportunity to introduce new product lines.”

“We want to give customers a choice of products within the same product category and we are confident that by offering a choice of good, better, best alternatives from the same manufacturer - we will go a long way in retaining customers who choose to purchase a premium product or a more affordable option according to their needs and budget, with the added benefit of every product carrying a warranty,” adds Evan.

Every Gyproc component not only comes with a performance warranty, but all Gyproc proprietary systems benefit from SpecSure, a 10-year warranty unique to Saint-Gobain effective from specification to installation, guaranteeing performance and recourse in the event of a product fault or defect.

Good Hope for the CastleThere has for many years been a work-place environmental problem inside the massive outer wall structure of the Castle of Good Hope.

Highly thermal conductive dark coloured roof material with very poor insulative properties covered the high thermal mass structure. Years back, planners added resin-bonded fibre insulation faced with foil under cement tiles. However some 20 years on, the glass fibre based material installed had col-lapsed, material density went up and R-values went down.

Principal agent Richard Ellis recom-mended that Eco-Insulation, from a Cape Town agent, be pumped to the maximum possible depth of 110 mm. To maintain the building’s aesthetics, the degenerating tiles would be replaced with Mazista slate.

Roofing tiles were removed from the crest of the roof, enabling the product installers access to remove the non-performing old product and create a location into which the new

product could be pumped.

"With the advent of SANS 10400 XA, insulation installed has to comply with specific R value requirements. When working within tight recesses such as the cavity between the sloped ceiling and the roof, Eco-Insulation can simply be pumped into place until the required depth is met. The product distributes itself evenly into the space and mats together, providing a very effective and enduring barrier against the movement of heat," says Eco-Insulation's founder, Cecil Homan.

Eco-Insulation is a fraction of the cost of expensive, energy-consuming air conditioners, which require regular maintenance; it remains constant all year round and carries a lifetime guarantee. The product will promote significant electricity savings and the cost recovery period is about three years in energy consumption.

The SABS-approved product is fire rated as “no spread of flame” above the ceiling and has sound-insulating benefits as well.

Eco-friendly Floor-cleaning Solution

News & ViewsThe Swedish-manufactured range of HTC Twister floor pads, introduced to the local market by Superb Flooring Systems, eliminates the need for harmful and toxic chemical detergents, by making use of innovative microscopic diamond technology.

“The pads are coated with billions of microscopic diamonds, and only require water for daily cleaning applications; thereby eliminating the need for wax, polish and periodic maintenance in most of the cases,” explains HTC Twister specialist Fredrik Toftemo. “In addition, the range reduces chemical usage in daily floor maintenance applications by up to 100 % and reduces waste materials by up to 99%.”

Exclusive Johannesburg-based events venue, Summer Place, was introduced to the Twister range by Ecolab, for application on its marble floors. Summer Place general manager Mary Krchnavy notes that despite only using the Twister floor pads for three months, the venue has already seen measurable results.

BerberPoint 920, the bestselling carpet range from Nexus, has gone green.

All 27 colours in the range now contain recycled fibre where previously only a limited selection of ‘green’ colourways were available in the BerberPoint Eco collection. The process has now been perfected for the most trusted commercial product, representing a giant leap for eco-friendly carpeting.

Made from Stainproof Eco Fibre, comprising recycled polyester from PET plastic bottles combined with Stainproof Miracle Fibre, BerberPoint 920’s recent colour update and introduction of seven new shades effectively broadens the palette of hard-wearing and environmentally friendly commercial carpets available to specifiers, architects and designers.

Recycling one ton of plastic bottles saves one and a half tons of CO2 from landfills and incineration. Backed with NexBac Eco which contains recycled fly-ash from post-industrial waste, BerberPoint 920 with eco colours is set to become the environmental choice of flooring.

The ResinBac tiles and broadloom varieties have recycled content in the face fibre, while NexBac Eco tiles contain recycled content in both the face fibre and backing.

Carpet Goes Green

Aimed at improving the overall health, safety and welfare within the construction industry, a group of forward-thinking professionals have launched BuildSafe South Africa (BSA). Founding members include Sasol Technology, Aveng Grinaker-LTA, Murray & Roberts and Fluor and Foster Wheeler.

A non-profit organisation, BuildSafe South Africa advocates the free exchange and sharing of information between organisations working in the local construction industry. It represents

construction-related stakeholder organisations, which will publicly express their commitment and dedication to help improve the health, safety and welfare conditions of all workers.

Information-sharing sessions will ensure better awareness, from all personnel levels, playing its part to achieve an ‘incident and injury-free work place’ for all. This initiative was successfully implemented in the UAE and following that model, leading representatives envisage that South Africa can follow suit in its desired outcomes and key objectives.

Fluor HSE Director Shane van der Nest says the BuildSafe Initiative is “aimed at influencing the construction industry’s attitude and disposition towards health, safety and welfare

for workers through improving overall awareness and understanding.”

“BuildSafe advocates the proven principle of safety, investment and return. It is in the industry’s interest to ensure that we continue to invest in the safety, health and environment on our construction sites. Safety is paramount; profits are secondary,” says Aveng Grinaker-LTA MD, Grahame McCaig.

BSA Administrator David Bass says that companies with a vested interest should “actively participate in this initiative, designed to get information to the majority of the 55 000 construction contractors and associated stakeholders.

Corobrik has converted both its Lawley and Driefontein facilities from a coal-fired operations to a natural gas-fired operation. It has also implemented enhanced extrusion technology to further reduce the company’s carbon footprint and is well set to maximise opportunities consequent to the new energy efficient building regulations.

Energy usage in buildings is under the spotlight in South Africa through the new regulations for energy-efficiency in the National Building Regulations (NBR) and Building Standards Act (BSA).

“Corobrik has benefited significantly

from the introduction of new extrusion technology that has resulted in fuel savings for the drying and firing of products in the order of 20%. This technology innovation and the wider use of natural gas for the firing our products (which nearly halves the carbon footprint of clay brick manufacture), is driving Corobrik’s embodied energy reductions,” explains Corobrik’s MD Dirk Meyer.

The company’s vision and imple-mentation of energy efficient methods of production and delivery of product, combined with the embodied energy value of clay bricks will stand it in good stead as the construction industry seeks to incorporate these values through the entire construction programme – from planning to completion. Corobrik has also been trading carbon credits it receives through energy efficient

innovation to fund further expansion in its coal-to-natural-gas programme for a number of years – a feat few industrial manufactures can lay claim to.

In the year ahead Corobrik expects to receive the UN-FCCC’s ratification to sell carbon cred-its from the Drie-fontein factory.

Looking at New Markets

Four leading renewable energy associations intend to launch an umbrella body to act as a single voice championing the importance and relevance of the renewable energy industry in South Africa. The announcement came in the wake of the Green Economy Accord concluded through a series of engagements among Government, business, labour and community at Nedlac. This accord envisages aggressively addressing climate change concerns and the need to grow the South African economy by simultaneously stimulating the green economy and creating ‘green jobs’.

“Creating a united voice for renewable energy custodians is imperative at this juncture in the development of the industry,” explains Pancho Ndebele, chair of the South African Solar Thermal Industry Association. “Both private sector and NGOs have for many years been promoting renewable energy in an uncertain regulatory environment. These efforts were never fully coordinated and it took time to get to where we are today, on the verge of exponential growth in the broader renewable energy industry. As signatories to the Green

Economy Accord, we have now taken steps to discharge the obligations we have undertaken, one of which was the creation of an umbrella body. “

The umbrella body will provisionally be called the South African Renewable Energy Council and will act as custodian of an industry in which government has placed considerable attention and trust. Other founding participants in establishing this council are the Sustainable Energy Society of Southern Africa, the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association and the South African Wind Energy Association.

A steering committee has been established for the council, which is expected to be fully operational by mid-2012, and will target financial and technical assistance from multi-lateral institutions. Sessa, Tel: (011) 447-1073 www.sessa.org.za

The question of quality versus speed has always been a contentious one in interior design. Economics and demand require buildings to go up quickly and affordably, which could compromise quality.

Lafarge Gypsum Plasterboard consists of an aerated gypsum core encased in, and firmly bonded on both sides with, special plasterboard liner, rendering a smooth yet highly functional surface. Special characteristics of gypsum provide outstanding advantages over other flat sheet materials. The board is fabricated using a modern automatic process under the supervision of highly-experienced engineers and chemists.

Three types of Lafarge Plasterboard are available from Lafarge Gypsum: Standard, Firecheck and Moisture Check.

Lafarge Standard Plasterboards are exceptionally versatile and lightweight. They can be used for domestic and

COMPELLING REASONS TO SPECIFY EPS!

P. O. Box 7861 Halfway House, 1685 t: 011 805 5002; f: 011 805 5033;

e: [email protected]

When it comes to insulation, here are 10 good reasons for using EPS

1. Over the past six decades, EPS has become accepted world-wide as the safe, economical and energy-saving form of building insulation.

2. EPS is compatible with cement, concrete, brick, masonry, mortars, plaster and bitumen-based damp-proof membranes.

3. EPS is lightweight and easy to work with, being supplied in moulded forms to required shape and size, or as large blocks for cutting into sheets and shapes.

4. EPS is moisture-resistant and retains its thermal properties.

5. EPS is rot-proof and durable. Correctly installed, EPS remains effective as a thermal insulation product for the duration of a building.

6. EPS is fi re-retardant. styFReneTM (Type FR) contains a fl ame-retarding additive.

7. EPS is energy-saving and helps conserve energy usage in other areas such as electrical heaters and open fi res.

8. EPS is environment-friendly, consisting of organic materials (primarily carbon and hydrogen) making it one of the most ecologically harmless products. It contains no CFCs and does not damage the ozone layer.

9. EPS is easily disposable. Correctly incinerated, 100kg of EPS polystyrene leaves just 0,01kg of

ash, and the gases emitted are non-toxic.

10. EPS is recyclable.

Whichever way you look at effi cient insulation, EPS scores

ten out of ten.
