WOODBorano does things different than other companies do. We don’t operate out of a high-tech plant; we have 65 craftsmen that hand build each of our doors, one at a time. At Borano we only use TRUE Mahogany.

99% of all the companies that build custom doors are not using true mahogany. Most companies are using African mahogany. African mahogany is not really Mahogany at all. When you get into African mahogany, Philippine, Indonesian, or one of the other woods that use the term “mahogany” as a marketing tool, you have to be careful. Most of these are inferior sapwoods.

True Mahogany is not sapwood but an oil wood. Sapwood has problems with excessive contraction and expansion. True Mahogany is a naturally stable wood, which is only one of the reasons that it is so desirable. Another reason is bugs don’t like to eat it. It’s also one of the most beautiful woods in the world.

Page 25: Architects powerpoint 7 19-11

CONSTRUCTIONThe most important part of the door is what you cannot see. Some companies build a Stile-and-Rail out of one solid piece of wood. This is a potential disaster. Because it could warp, cup, twist, check or crack. Other companies will laminate 2 or 3 pieces of wood together, which gets solves many of the problems… but Borano goes way beyond this! Here’s what we do. Our doors are 2 1/4” thick (with a butcher block core) The reason cutting boards are put together as a butcher block is because it keeps the wood from bowing and cupping so that it will stay flat on your counter top. That is the same thing we do with the core of our door. We cut the Mahogany down to a 4-piece butcher block and cover it with a thick 1/4-inch overlay on each side. What we’ve done is create a Stile-and-Rail that has smaller pieces of wood that expand and contract less than big pieces of wood. We glue this all together with the #1 rated glue called Franklin Multibond Advantage II – it is a two-part catalyzed waterproof glue. We glue the wood and compress it at 250psi for 4 hours, release it from the clamps and let it rest for 24 hours. We’ve produced a glue joint that is actually stronger than the wood itself!

Page 26: Architects powerpoint 7 19-11

JOINERYThe next thing we do is joinery. We do not use dowels, pegs, screws, or nails for joinery. We use old-world Mortise-and-Tenon. Our Tenon is 3-inches by 3-inches by 3/4 inch thick. This gives us more square inches of gluing surface and keeps us from having any hinge effect from Stile to rail. This method of construction, between our butcher-block core and our Mortise-and-Tenon construction allows us to build doors that are taller without the worry of cupping and warping. PANELS AND GLASSWhen it comes to panels, we don’t ever use butt joints. All panels must be floating so they can move on their own without binding. These panels are put together with either a running tenon, a V-groove, or at the very least a biscuit joint. This type of joinery forms a key and keeps us from ever having separating panels. Then we glaze the panel into the Stile-and-Rail with a product called DOW 995. This is industrial silicon adhesive. It allows the panel to float – to move – but it keeps the weather outside and the climate control inside. Then of course we have the glass. We glaze the glass into the panel – our glass is not your typical glass… we don’t use 1 or 2 panes of glass. Our glass is 4 panes of glass. It is insulated, laminated glass… which is glass and resin pressed together. It’s extremely safe, sound deadening and does not shatter. Other companies use tempered glass, which will shatter if it’s struck.

GRILLSThe grill on your door is hand forged from wrought iron. We painstakingly clean it through a chemical bath. We have an electro-statically applied primer and an electro-statically applied finish. This ensures that your grill will be beautiful for decades with no cracking or peeling paint.

Page 27: Architects powerpoint 7 19-11

JAMBS, HINGES, THRESHOLD, CASING AND BRICK MOLDINGAfter the door is constructed, we pre-hang it in the jambs and threshold. Our jambs are not built like the typical jambs. The industry standard is 1-1/4 inch thick. Our jambs are 1-3/4” thick. We do not use applied doorstops. We use a rabbet-cut to ensure the full strength and integrity of the jamb for the doorstop. And we hinge our door to the jamb with our own custom-made 4.5 x 4.5 solid brass hinges. You cannot go to the store and buy our hinges. We have our hinges custom made to support the extreme weight of our doors. Not only that, but they are very beautiful. The brass plate that you screw on to the door is almost a 1/4-inch thick. They have oversized barrels and finials top and bottom.

We do not use ugly aluminum thresholds. We believe that the threshold should be just as nice as the door therefore our thresholds are solid Mahogany. We weather-strip the jamb as well as all the way around the door. This double weather-stripping ensures no weather infiltration. The bottom of the door has a rabbet edge to overlap the jamb. There is also a drip edge at the bottom of each door; on the bottom of the drip edge there is a friction groove. Your door unit will also come with casing and brick-mold. All of these things build value in your home, ensure no weather infiltration, and that you have a door unit that’s impeccable. These are just further steps that we take to make certain that you not only have beauty but that you also have function. Beauty without function is worthless.

FINISH AND INSTALLThere’s three different ways for you to receive this door. Unfinished: for interior doors, but rarely done for exterior. Completely finish: which we rarely do. Or with a base coat only, which we do not charge for. And here are the reasons we like doing exterior doors with the base coat only. We use Sikkens finishes. We know you’ve heard someone tell you that they did 10 and 15 step hand polished finishes. This will actually create more maintenance for you. Those multi-step finishes end up needing to be refinished after so many years. If you over-seal wood, eventually it will crack. If you under-seal wood it will move too much and warp. The reason we use Sikkens is because it’s very low maintenance. It’s also the ease of application and the high UV protection – because the UV light is the wood’s worst enemy. Also, you want a finish to allow for a slow breathe. The wood must be able to contract and expand to allow it to acclimate and stabilize. With the Sikkens finish, the only maintenance you’ll ever have is coating the door every 4-5 years. Maintenance instructions are included with your order. If you are buying a high-end door, you certainly want a perfect fit, finish and install, correct? By Borano, providing the basecoat only, the installer can cut plugs out of the backside of the jamb before they install it and then mark symmetrically around the jamb where they are going to place the fasteners. They can pre-drill into the jamb for the fasteners, recess the screw heads, and plug the holes. Then when the final two finish coats are applied your installation marks virtually disappear, leaving a clean professional high end, appearance.

Top 5 Reasons to Choose Borano:• Borano doors are made from the most luxurious and durable wood – Mahogany. Most

importantly, all Borano doors are made from fine-furniture-quality genuine mahogany . We do not use the imitation Philippine mahogany (luan) that competitor’s use and market as authentic mahogany. This “imposter mahogany” is lighter, more brittle and is prone to chipping and bowing. There is only one way to guarantee that your mahogany door is made from the finest quality, authentic Honduran mahogany – buy direct from Borano

• We provide a door thickness of 2 1/4" as a Borano Standard compared to the normal 1 3/4" industry standard that other door companies provide.

• Our Borano Standard normal jambs thickness is 1 3/4" thick instead of the industry standard of 1 1/4".

• Our doors with glass are insulated laminated glass, which is important for sound "deadness", unlike our competitor’s that provide just tempered insulated glass. Plus, we use four pieces of glass, whereas they use only two.

• Working with Borano is easy. We provide an automated and smooth ordering and tracking process. You can follow through the entire process from the very beginning by logging on with your own Borano User ID and password that we provide to you at the time we quote you a price.
