NEW GLARUS MIDDLE SCHOOL SENTINEL TERM 2 - RECAP Term 2 was a fantastic 12 weeks for the middle school. Events including the Green & Gold Celebration, DARE Graduation, PBIS Events (Soccer, Dodgeball, Cribbage) Geography Bee, Spelling Bee, Science Fair, Boys Basketball, Wrestling, Band Concert, Battle of the Books, Solo & Ensemble, and we culminated it all with our end-of-term PBIS Celebration. Many of those events were extra-curricular, but students remained active in class working on experiments ranging from levers and pulleys in Mr. Eddy’s Science class to creating 3D objects through Mr. Andy’s Project Lead the Way Science class. If your Knight hasn’t shown you some of their work, ask them to see it. It is worth it and often quite impressive. I mentioned the end-of-term PBIS Celebration. It was truly the icing on the cake of a strong trimester. This term, the teams chose to follow the Olympics theme. Homerooms selected countries, designed flags and slogans, selected individual events to participate in (free-throw, tricycle relay, curling, football toss, etc.) and in the afternoon the full middle school of more than 260 students, staff, and parents participated in all of the events. Most notable, though, was the excellent sportsmanship demonstrated by the student body. This is something NGMS likes to ‘hang our hat on’. Somebody will always win and somebody else will always lose; but to have everyone demonstrate positive sportsmanship is a skill not many middle schools can boast. TERM 2 - RECAP

Term 2 was a fantastic 12 weeks for the middle school.

Events including the Green & Gold Celebration, DARE

Graduation, PBIS Events (Soccer, Dodgeball, Cribbage)

Geography Bee, Spelling Bee, Science Fair, Boys Basketball,

Wrestling, Band Concert, Battle of the Books, Solo &

Ensemble, and we culminated it all with our end-of-term PBIS

Celebration. Many of those events were extra-curricular, but

students remained active in class working on experiments

ranging from levers and pulleys in Mr. Eddy’s Science class to

creating 3D objects through Mr. Andy’s Project Lead the Way

Science class. If your Knight hasn’t shown you some of their

work, ask them to see it. It is worth it and often quite

impressive.

I mentioned the end-of-term PBIS Celebration. It was

truly the icing on the cake of a strong trimester. This term, the

teams chose to follow the Olympics theme. Homerooms

selected countries, designed flags and slogans, selected

individual events to participate in (free-throw, tricycle relay,

curling, football toss, etc.) and in the afternoon the full middle

school of more than 260 students, staff, and parents participated

in all of the events.

Most notable, though, was the excellent sportsmanship

demonstrated by the student body. This is something NGMS

likes to ‘hang our hat on’. Somebody will always win and

somebody else will always lose; but to have everyone

demonstrate positive sportsmanship is a skill not many middle

schools can boast.

PBIS Positive Behaviors

Interventions and Supports

Tier 2 – Last month we shared

about PBIS and Tier 1. NGMS

has begun the process of being a

Tier 2 school. This means, there

are programs in place for

students that can benefit from

interventions beyond our Tier 1

pieces. Our first programs being

implemented are called Bright

Knights and Academic

Coaching. These programs

work with students in being

‘Respectful’, ‘Responsible’, and

‘Safe’ by working closely with

staff on specific skills (i.e.

organization, relationships, etc.).

BAND AND CHOIR At NGMS, the schedule has been created to allow 6

th

through 8th

grade the opportunity to be a part of band and

choir while still being able to attend other survey classes

(i.e. Art, FaCS, Ag, etc.). There is a 6th

grade band and

choir, and a combined 7th

and 8th

grade band and choir.

This year, nearly 80% of the students in 6th

-8th

grade

participated in band or choir.

There are concerts throughout the year (see last page for

upcoming dates) that allow the students to showcase their

talents. Additionally, students have the option to

participate in Solo & Ensemble annually.

Write captions for the selected photos.

ASK YOUR STUDENT ABOUT “KNIGHT PROPS”. THESE ARE GIVEN TO STUDENTS (AND SOMETIMES

STAFF) DURING MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS. NGMS HAS GIVEN OVER 400 KNIGHT PROPS THIS YEAR.

“Math proficiency is the gateway to a number of incredible careers that students may never have considered.”

- Danica McKellar

Content Focus – Saxon Math

The New Glarus School District utilizes Saxon Math for

its Math Curriculum for Kindergarten through 10th

grade

(Algebra 2). Saxon is a comprehensive and thoroughly

researched math program. It is based on the teaching

principles of incremental development, continual practice

and review, and cumulative assessment.

At NGMS, Saxon Math transitions students from

manipulatives and worksheets to a textbook approach.

The emphasis is on developing algebraic reasoning as well

as geometric concepts. Lessons include a new concept

plus a review of previous concepts and investigations give

students a more in-depth treatment of math concepts.
