arizona sunray’s Jerusha abarca Freshman at asU Barrett Honor’s College, anthropology Major

1. How long have you been a part of Arizona Sunrays? Three years, first year in jazz and the last two years in Dance Company. I also danced with a ballet studio when I was 3-7 years old and danced in The Nutcracker a few times.

2. Tell us about one of your coaches? What makes him/her a great coach? Jen Warsaw, she is Director of Dance at Sunrays and teaches several of my classes. She is awesome in her teaching and inspires me to push myself to be better. She believed that I could be awesome, even though I started dance later than most in my life, and I really appreciate her for that. She is choreographing and coaching me in a solo this year, which I plan to do in competitions later this year.

3. How many different types of dance do you practice? Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Lyrical, Contemporary, and Musical Theatre.

4. What is your favorite? Why is this your favorite? Lyrical and contemporary are my favorites, because they’re mixture of styles and in these styles I am able to express myself in a way that just feels natural.

5. What are you studying at ASU? Anthropology, but I’m also considering a double major in dance or history. I earned my Associates of Arts degree from PVCC last year when I graduated from Arizona Agribusiness and Equine Center High School, so I have many of my prerequisites already completed.

6. If you could have your dream job, what would it be?I’m not really sure, but considering that I want a double major, I think that I will either end up being a dance teacher or doing research in anthropology, specifically archaeology. These are two very different careers, but I like the fact that a double

major could open me up to both interests, wherever I want to go with them. Maybe I’ll do both!

7. How do you juggle college and dance? What are some tips that you would give to our younger readers? It’s important to manage your time and make sure that you really want something before you commit to it, so that you will push through when it gets difficult. I also work at the dance studio helping to teach and leading dance and gymnastics birthday parties and nanny two days a week, so it’s important that I stay focused on work, but it’s also important to stay committed to my Company and my team members. I would also suggest making time to just have fun and breathe. That is so important. If you never make time to relax, it can become too much.

8. How has college life been so far? What do you find the hardest about attending college? Getting used to the increased workload and adapting to different expectations of different professors. College is hard, but it’s also exciting to be so in charge of your education and to get to learn what you want to learn, so I’ve really been enjoying it, even though it was a major adjustment at first.

9. Do you aspire to be a dancer at ASU one day? I may do my double major in dance, but definitely plan on taking classes next year and getting involved in one of the many dance groups that are offered at ASU. Z

The “New” New Way academy

What is the most exciting thing to you about your new school buildings? We had many things on our “Campus Wish List”, and this campus has it all!  Our students are now enjoying a gymnasium for PE and sports, a cafeteria, a stage for performances, and two large playing fields. The campus is very safe, and we are enjoying our larger classrooms and expansive technology as well.

What changes/improvements have you made in preparations for the students’ arrival? The new campus provides many new opportunities for our students, and we wanted to ensure that students felt right at home.  In the month before we began school, we painted every room with the brain-based colors of our previous campus.  Three walls are a neutral shade of beige, and the focus wall, where we place the Smartboard and students focus their attention, is a calming shade of blue. Thanks to generous donations from Dunn-Edwards and Lowe’s, along with over a hundred volunteers, we completed the painting in time for our students to arrive on the first day!

Bigger school means more students, right? How many more students do you plan to bring in because of your expansion? The demand for a New Way Academy education is high, and our former campus was too small to accommodate any additional students. Because our academic program is rooted in individualized instruction, our school model will always be true to a smaller student population.  Because of our additional classrooms and teachers, we look forward to expanding our enrollment from 150 to 250 over the next few years. This includes students from grades K-12.  Our new campus allows us to create a distinct space for the Lower, Junior, and High School.

What are the biggest changes that the students will see day-to-day besides the bigger campus? Anything in particular inside the classrooms? Our education model has proven successful, and the core of New Way will remain the same.  New Way Academy serves students with learning differences including  dyslexia, ADHD, and challenges with executive functioning.  The campus provides our teachers additional opportunities to hone in on exactly what each student needs to be successful.  Teachers are certainly enjoying the additional square footage in their classrooms for instruction.  Lessons are based on multi-sensory instruction, and having extra room to explore and create has been wonderful.  Our sign language teacher has a large classroom, and our PE coach now has a workout and yoga room, a gymnasium, and a soccer and football field!

Students are enjoying the gym, especially with the shiny new Bulldog floor.  Thanks to a very generous donor, we have completed a custom floor that reads, “Home of the Bulldogs”.  The timing is perfect, as our Junior High and High School Basketball teams prepare to host their first home games in the coming weeks. Our High School team has been to the playoffs for the last two years, and they are excited to have a home court to bring home some victories.

How long has this process been for the New Way Team? What is in store for you all now?We had been searching for a larger campus for quite some time.  This school is a dream come true, and we love that our students have embraced the new campus with such great energy.  They are walking around the campus like we’ve been here for years!

Anything else that you would like to add that you think our readers should know?We are happy to welcome  members of the community out for a tour. Interested students and parents, teachers, and neighbors that would like to see how we’ve transformed the school—our doors are always open to you!

Zona got the chance to catch up with abbey ross, executive director and Mike Walker, Head of school at New Way academy on their excitement about their new campus.

Q. I’m really interested in going to ASU, so why would I consider

Scottsdale Community College?

A. Starting out at a community college can save you time and money, as well as

provide smaller class sizes and a more nurturing environment. All of the Maricopa Community Colleges, including SCC, have wonderful transfer pathways to ASU and other universities. Through our transfer partnership with ASU, you can choose from a variety of transfer programs. If you have a major selected, the Maricopa to ASU Pathways Program (MAPP) is your best option. Students in MAPP follow a prescribed

sequence of course work that meets the lower-division course requirements for an ASU major. When you complete your MAPP, you will have met the requirements for an associate’s degree and will have greater chance for success at ASU. Other benefits of MAPP include guaranteed admission to ASU, eligibility for the Tuition Commitment Program and the assurance that when you transfer you are right on track to earn your bachelor’s degree. If you don’t have a major in mind, don’t worry because you can select an exploratory pathway that will enable you to learn about ASU majors, career options and the right courses to take. Other transfer program options include the RN to BSN Pathway program; the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) to Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) program; and the

General Transfer option. You can start at SCC and transfer to ASU at any time and

complete a bachelor’s degree in one of more than 250 academic programs. If you’re still not sure, come to the SCC Welcome Center and talk to an advisor about getting started on the right path to a better future.

Every year on Veteran’s Day, the students of Christ Lutheran School say thank you to worship with and learn about what it means to be a Veteran. The morning starts off with a special breakfast, hosted by the CLS Leadership team, which is a group

of 6th – 8th graders who aspire to be strong Christian leaders in their classrooms, school and community.  This year, about 30 Veterans, from all branches of service were served a wonderful breakfast, while sharing their stories with the students and each other.  After breakfast, they were invited to attend a chapel service in their honor, where the student body learned the history of Veteran’s Day and the role this group of people have played in our history. The students were able to honor the Veteran’s with several patriotic songs, as well as appreciative applause.   At 11:00am, the entire student body met at the flagpole to lower the flag, observe a moment of silence and say a prayer of thanks for those who gave their lives for our freedom, before raising the flag. Cooper Parson, a 6th grader, joined his grandfather Larry Stromberg at the breakfast. Larry served in the Army as a military police officer in Korea for four years. Cooper shared that his grandfather was one of the border guards, as the treaty was signed to end the Korean War.  Mr. Stromberg enlisted in the army, right out of high school.  He had gone on one date, with a high school sophomore named Kathy, before he was shipped out. After a four year absence, he returned to the United States and called Kathy.  They were married shortly after and have  been happily married for 51 years. Cooper Parson:  “My grandpa always tells me stories about his time in the service.  He was really glad to serve his country and it was cool to hear from the other Veterans.” Bella Perrone:  “I was happy to participate in the Veteran’s Day breakfast because both of my grandfathers are Veterans and I loved being able to honor such brave men and women.” Jessie Silverstein:  “I thought it was sad that so many of the Veterans returned from war without being thanked and I was happy to be able to show the Veterans how much we appreciate their service.” Z

How many people can do the cha-cha or the waltz and when you add a pair of skates and a sheet of ice it creates something completely different

known as ice dancing. For Lauren Kobely, a sixth grader at Phoenix Country Day School, ice dancing comes as second nature through hours of training and dedication. Because of this dedication Lauren is constantly at the rink whether it be to practice a new dance or to watch her brother’s hockey practices. With her determination she finally secured a spot in the 2013 National Solo Ice Dancing Championships at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado.

When Lauren was just six years old she started ice dancing. Her mom used to ice skate so Lauren’s parents thought that ice dancing might be something fun for her not knowing how much she would accomplish. She loved it from the beginning and never has second thoughts even when she is having trouble mastering a new move. Lauren didn’t just immediately learn how to ice dance she had to take gradual steps to become as talented as she is today. First she learned how to ice skate and then she began to take ballroom dancing lessons so that it would be easy to combine the two. Today, now eleven years old, Lauren is still ice dancing. She practices three days a week for about an hour to an hour and a half. During these practices

her and her coach usually choreograph the dances or practice previous dances she has already learned.

Throughout the season Lauren competed in many competitions in order to make her way to nationals. She was ranked seventh in the Western United States and therefore was invited to participate. During the qualifying round Lauren competed the Blues and the Tango. For this round she placed 4th so her and five other competitors would move on to the final round. For the championship round Lauren did the Waltz, which she mentioned was her favorite dance. While competing Lauren said that she didn’t watch the other competitors because it would make her nervous and in the end this paid off because she received eighth place!

For this past season she competed at a Preliminary level but next season she will move up to the Pre-Bronze level. After this recent accomplishment Lauren hopes to perfect her axel jump, which is where a skater starts with a forward takeoff, does a 1½ rotation and then lands facing backwards. But her ultimate goal is to complete all her gold dances (the highest level) before she goes to college. Z

“On-Track helped give me the confidence I needed to

Saints are an important tradition to the Catholic Church. At Saint

Theresa Catholic School the first grade started a new tradition last year involving saints. The tradition continues. In early October this year, each first grader chose a saint, wrote a report about that saint, and created a costume that represents the saint. It was a busy month at each saint’s house! The culminating event was on November 1st when the Catholic Church celebrates All Saint’s Day. The “saints” processed in with the altar servers and Fr. Bing. The first grade saints did the readings, the Prayers of the Faithful and made an offering during the Presentation of the Gifts. It was a fabulous day! May the tradition continue for years to come. Z

leslie buggCooking Club at sta1. How long have you been apart of the Cooking Club at STA?I have been apart of the cooking class for about 2 years.

2. What is the most delicious thing that you have ever made?We make so many wonderful things in cooking class, it’s hard to choose. Some of my favorite things are Cup Cake Ice Cream Cones, and these yummy little cookie like hamburger things. They are not real hamburgers, but look like them but are made out of cookies and fun stuff made to look like them.  I also like the salads and dressings we have made.

3. Do you have a favorite cooking show on TV that you watch?I love to watch Bizarre Foods and Cup Cake Wars.

4. What would you tell someone that maybe interested in joining the cooking club at STA? What is your favorite part of this club? The cooking class at STA is great place to learn new things and meet new friends. You also can learn to make dinner for your family. My favorite part is cooking with friends.

5. Why is your school so cool? STA is so cool because of the teachers.

6. Do you have a favorite teacher? What makes him/her a great teacher?I love all of my past teachers, but my favorite teacher is my current teacher. Her name is Sister Michael. Vincent. Her goal in life is to be a Saint. Need I say more?

7. You play soccer. Do you play for your school or club?I play soccer for the Saint Francis League. It is a league where my friends from Saint Thomas the Apostle play.

8. What position do you play? How long have you been playing? I play forward mostly.  But, I have also played goalie, center field, and striker. I have been playing for two years.

9. What do you want to be when you grow up?I would like to be a professional soccer player.

10. What other hobbies do you have?I love to do crafts, and make gifts, especially jewelry. Z
