Why are phytoplankton important?

• Produce O2 in lakes

• Indicator of primary production

• Control Other populations of organisms

How phytoplankton is measured

• Sampling Techniques– Van Dorn – Preservation with Lugols solution

• Lab Techniques– Water settled for several days– Increased concentration– Identified to Genus

Chlorophyll

• Main pigment in photosynthetic organisms

• Commonly used as an indicator of production

Chlorophyll Analysis

• Water sampled out in field

• In Lab– Mix sample– Measure sample – Filtered– Packaged in foil– Frozen until analysis

Chlorophyll Analysis Con’t

• 90% buffered acetone used for extraction

• Filters added to 15ml alkaline acetone solution

• Refrigerated for 24 hours• Fluorometer was used

– Fluorometer produces a concentration in µgrams/liter

Conclusions

• Cross-Lake Comparisons– Wide variety of phytoplankton

• Sampling Error– Sampling day conditions– Analyzing techniques
