    DISCLAIMER This training manual is

intended or trained re responders and

assumes a ull understanding o how to

saely attack structure and other res.

Civilians and other operators o the ARA

SAfetypRo should not rely on these

guidelines as a substitute or proessional

training and should never presume to be

capable o engaging a re in the same

way as a trained and properly equipped

re ghter. This manual is a supplement

to proessional training specic to the

    deployment o the ARASAfetypRo.

It is not a substitute or common sense,

training, your departmants SOP or other

    operational guidelines.

    The ARASAfetypRo Condensed

Aerosol Technology is not appropriate or

all res and all re conditions. In some

    cases and conditions, the Condensed

Aerosol Technology may ail to perorm

or to eectively suppress re. Under

    no circumstances should the device

be relied on to ully extinguish re. It

is not a re extinguisher and traditional

    reghting tactics are always required

    to extinguish re ater deployment,

regardless o the ecacy o the

    deployment. Under no circumstances

    ARA SAFETY PROOPERATING MANUAL 3

    Introduction

    Dear First Responder,

Thank you or making the ARASAfetypRo Condensed Aerosol Technology Fire Knockdown Tool an

integral part o your reghting arsenal. The ARApRois a highly eective light re suppression tool

that is proving itsel every day in the eld.

The ARApRoallows rst responders to buy time and help save a amily rom the loss o their home

and property and the destruction o irreplaceable personal eects rom re and water damage.

In more than 100 real re deployments to date, ARASAfetypRo Condensed Aerosol Technology

has proven so eective that most o the used devices have been replaced by the property owners

    insurance company.

Prior to using the ARApRo, it is important that responders complete the training program and view

the associated short instructional video online at http://arasaety.com/training/trainingprogram.htm

Together, these will provide responders with the basic knowledge required to deploy the device saely

    and eectively.

It is also important to recognize rom the outset that every re brings its own unique challenges and

dangers and that this Basic Training Program is not a substitute or ormal reghting training. When

ghting a re with ARApRo Condensed Aerosol Technology, it is essential that responders ully use

their training, common sense and the best tactical inormation available. Most importantly, responders

should always ensure that saety is their top priority.

At ARASAfety, we are continually improving our product oering and our training programs.

Your eedback helps us do that and helps us make everyone saer. I you have any questions, concerns

or comments, please dont hesitate to contact us directly at 1-888-955-8883.

    IMPORTANT NOTICE

All res are unique. and the ARA SAFETY PRO

aerosol will behave dierently and aect re and heatdierently based on a wide variety o conditions, including but not limited to: type and density o uels

involved, intensity and spread o fame, venting, air fow, and building age, design and construction.

ARA PRO Condensed Aerosol Technology is a re knockdown tool. It is meant to supplement, not

replace, conventional reghting tools and tactics. Under no circumstance should this technology

be relied on as a sole means o suppression.

ALL FIRES MUST BE PROPERLY FOUGHT AND OVERHAULED WITH CONVENTIONAL METHODS

FOLLOWING USE OF THE ARA SAFETY PRO CONDENSED AEROSOL TECHNOLOGY.

Fighting Fire With ARA Saety Pro

Fire occurs when oxygen, heat and uel act

together to produce a sustained chemical

reaction. I any one o the our components o the

tetrahedron is removed, the re is suppressed.

    ARApRo Condensed Aerosol Technology works

simultaneously on three components o the

tetrahedron heat, uel and the chemical

    reaction without attacking oxygen.

ARApRo aerosol suppresses re with a primarily

    potassium carbonate condensed aerosol.

When the aerosol is exposed to heat in a ire,

potassium ions break ree, absorbing energy

and reducing heat levels. These ree potassium

ions bond with the hydroxyl ions that would

otherwise uel the i re chain reaction. These

newly bonded hydroxyl ions cannot then bond

with oxygen. This breaks the chemical reactionand rapidly suppresses the ire.

Some suppression systems, such as CO2

    act by

reducing oxygen levels. While this oten proves

successul in suppressing the re it can prove very

dangerous to both occupants and responders alike,

    particularly in a conned space.

Water, and water-based systems, attack only

the heat and cause substantial collateral and

environmental damage over a wide area.

Water-based systems are particularly harmulwhen deployed in an environment containing

    irreplaceable personal eects or sophisticated

    electronic equipment.

In highly conned environments, the ARApRo

    Condensed Aerosol Technology may marginally

displace oxygen. Care should be taken to remove

victims, i possible, beore deploying the device.

    Benets

    Lower Temperature

    When deployed, ARASAfetypRocan lower the

temperature by as much as 700F in as little as 30

seconds. Lowering the temperature this way makes

an interior attack saer and increases the ecacy o

extinguishing mediums including water and oam.

    Attack Hard to Access Fires

Attic res, basement res, and res in conned

spaces can be dicult and dangerous to attack.

When strategically deployed, the device can attack

and suppress re in areas that are dicult or

    impossible or crews to access.

    Prevent Property Damage

Next to saving lives, saving a homeowners

property rom loss is one o the most important

roles o a reghter. Deploying the device can halt

re progress and minimize the need or water,

saving tens o thousands o dollars in structure

damage and minimizing the loss o irreplaceable

    personal items and mementoes.

    Buy Time

A rst arriving crew can deploy the device without

entering a structure. This can be done saely while

additional crews are en route, or while waiting orwater or oam to become available.

In a ully involved re, deploying one or more

units can suppress and contain the re so that the

structure can be saved when additional resources

    become available.

Below Grade Electrical FiresARASAfetypRocan be eectively deployed in

below-grade electrical station, substation and vault

res, suppressing and containing the re while

utility crews cut the power. Manholes should be

covered immediately ollowing use o the device to

    prevent aerosol rom escaping.

    Prevent Flame Spread

When a ully involved re is impinging on

    neighboring property, deploying the ARApRomay

knock down the re suciently to prevent spread

while an attack is mounted, or while resources are

    redirected.

    Control Large Fires

Large res that have not yet vented may be

suitable or multiple units to be deployed. I the

re is too large to attack eectively with existing

    resources, one ARASAfetypRodeployed or

every 2,100 cubic eet can help signicantly in

    bringing the re under control.

The ARA PRO Condensed Aerosol Technology is a light attack fre

suppression tool. It can be used at any stage o fre response, but is most

eective when deployed in the early stages o fre.

Following are some o the ways the ARA PRO can aid in deensive and

    oensive fre attacks.

    Storage

    Preparing or Service

    The ARASAfetypRoconsists o a two-part

assembly, 1) a main body with an integral handle, nished in red enamel and 2) an Activator.

The 2012 version o the ARA PRO is ready or

deployment when the Activator is connected

to the body o the unit. Handle with care. No

additional preparation or service is needed

beore putting the ARApRo Condensed Aerosol

Technology into service. Please reer to Page 8 o

this manual or details on the new Activator and

    Activator Instructions or deployment.

In the event your ARA PRO Activator is not

you to an instructional video and guide you with

    installation.

Please note that the ARApRo is designed to have

the activator installed at all times. The activator

should never be removed rom the device.

Store the ARASAfetypRo in the approved

protective case until ready to deploy.

    Storing on Apparatus

All ARASAfetypRodevices should be stored in

a protective carrying case or on trucks secured in

the NFPA approved PAC mounting bracket, available

    rom your dealer.

Replacement units rom the station should be

transerred to the reuseable protective carrying

    case o the deployed unit.

ARApRodevices should be kept in an easy to

access, clearly marked location on department

    vehicles.

All responders should be brieed on which vehicles

are equipped with ARApRo devices, and where

the device is stored on the vehicles.

Generally, a department will equip with a minimum

o our units per station. ARApRodevices are

customarily installed on those vehicles most likely

to arrive rst at the re ground.

    Storing in Station

    ARASAfetypRodevices should be visually

inspected on receipt and on an annual basis

thereater. The inspection should ensure that a

starting assembly is installed and that there are no

visible signs o damage or corrosion. Contact ARA

SAfetyor your ARA Authorized Dealer or support

in inspecting the device i required.

Replacement units should be stored in their

corrugated shipping and storage carton until

needed in a clean, dry, location in the station or

hall. Devices should be stacked no more than 5

    high in original packaging.

    ARASAfetypRodevices are warranted or ve

years, and have an operational lietime expectancy

o up to 10 years under normal storage conditions.

Ater that time, units should be withdrawn rom

    service and used or training.

    ARASAfetypRodevices that on visible inspection

appear damaged or corroded should be taken out

o service and used or training purposes. Please

    note that ARASAfetypRodevices require no

user service and should never be disassembled byunauthorized personnel.

    ARASAfetyaccepts no responsibility or units

which have been modifed or tampered with in any

way or damaged due to improper storage.

    Usage

    At the Fire Ground

On arrival at a ire, the ARApRo should always

be retrieved immediately rom respondersvehicles and taken directly to the structure by

    the responders.

I multiple units are available, responders

should have at least two devices available or

deployment, with one acting as back-up or

    providing additional coverage.

    Tactical Assessment

Once a tactical assessment has been conducted,

the determination should then be made as towhether or not using ARApRo Condensed

Aerosol Technology is appropriate and as to how

many units to deploy. Best judgment and training

should always be used in making any ARApRo

use determination, but generally, i the answer to

any o the ollowing questions is yes, deployment

    may be supported.

Is the ire too big to combat with an available

    conventional ire extinguisher?

Is the ire small enough that the ARApRo

    Condensed Aerosol Technology may ully

suppress the ire, limiting or eliminating the

    need to use water?

Is an interior attack planned and the structure

    not signiicantly venting?

Is the temperature o the ire too high to get

close enough to eectively attack the ire with

    water?

Is victim rescue required and is rescue

    impossible without deploying ARApRo?

Are additional resources such as manpower,

water or oam not immediately available?

    Announce Activation

Beore activating the device, it is important that

everyone on the ire ground be brieed on whatto expect.

ARA SAFETY PRO aerosol device will

deploy within 4~8 seconds o activation.

During deployment, the unit reaches very

high temperatures. It must be thrown

immediately on activation and must NOT be

deployed within six eet o a ellow ireighter

    or other live person.

    ara pro Condensed Aerosol Technology

generates a very large dense white cloud o

    potassium bicarbonate aerosol that reduces

visibility to zero in the room in which it is

    deployed.

Successul knockdown o a ire by ara pro

Condensed Aerosol Technology will result in

the smoke escaping the structure changing

rom dark gray or black, to light gray or white.

    How to Activate

    1. DEPLOYMENT STRATEGY should be rmly in

    mind beore handling the device.

    2. REMOVE THE DEVICE FROM THE

    PROTECTIVE HARD CASE

    3. HOLD THE DEVICE FIRMLY with your throwing

    hand

    4. INSERT INDEX FINGER o your other hand

through the ring o the pin

    5. PULL THE PIN STRAIGHT-OUT TO ACTIVATE

completely removing the pin rom the head o

the activator & breaking the red plastic retaining

strap. Whether or not you hear a sharp snap,

assume that THE DEVICE IS NOW ACTIVATED

& WILL DEPLOY IN 4 TO 8 SECONDS.

    6. IMMEDIATELY THROW the device as close to

the seat o the re as possible & retreat a sae

distance.ENSURE THAT YOU ARE AT LEAST

8-FEET* FROM THE DEVICE AS THE DEVICE

    DEPLOYS.

    *8-eet is the recommended minimum

distance away rom the device as itdeploys. This recommendation is directed at

responders wearing SCBA & other protective

    gear. Unprotected responders should retreat

to a greater distance rom the deploying

    aerosol and ire area.

    About the Activator

    straightorward + proven + reliable

Activator consists o 4 key components:

    A. BODY which threads into an ARASAfetypRo

    B. HEAD which threads onto a BODY

    C. PULL PIN which inserts at a right angle

    through the HEAD

    D. RETAINING STRAP which is a red plastic strap

that threads through the ring o the PULL PIN &

around the BODY o an activator, securing thepin in place until time o activation.

    Activation

    Activating Device

Once the decision to deploy the ARASAfetypRo

has been made, the deployment process is very

    simple and straightorward.

Identiy the easiest, sae throwing path to the

seat o the re, or the nearest point possible,

    and identiy a clear exit.

Instruct bystanders to stand clear. Ensure no

bystanders are in the intended throw path or in

    the vicinity o the thrower.

Clear the deployment area o all personnel.

All responders on the re ground should be

clearly advised o the intention to deploy the

device. Bystanders should also be notied loudly.

  • 7/30/2019 ARAPro_OperatingManual_EngFr_2012

    9/22

    ARA SAFETY PROOPERATING MANUAL 9

    Activation

Activate the ARApRo in accordance with the

    instructions on page 8.

Deployment will cause visibility in thedeployment area to quickly reduce to zero

and responders should leave the area i at

all possible. Time should be allowed or the

device to suppress the ire. This will take

    approximately 60 seconds. Responders

should then assess the ire condition and

proceed according to their Structure Fire

    Operational Guidelines.

I a thermal imaging camera is available

it should be held at the ready. In the zerovisibility environment ollowing deployment,

one will help to identiy hot spots and locate

any victims not already identied. It will also

help in the evaluation o the eectiveness o

    the deployment.

    Finally, always overhaul completely with

    water or oam.

    Victim Recovery

ARA SAFETY PROdevices should only be

deployed or victim recovery i sae recovery o

the victim would not otherwise be possible.

ARApRodevice should be thrown as ar rom the

victim as possible, while still deploying the device

in the area that will impact the re.

Responders should always be aware that deploying

the ARASAfetypRo will disrupt thermal layers in

the structure causing hot air to move temporarily

towards the foor, creating a serious burn hazardor any occupants.

A thermal imaging camera should be held at the

ready. In the zero visibility environment ollowing

deployment, one will be necessary in order to

    locate the victim.

The victim should be removed as quickly as

possible. The victim should be treated as or

    smoke inhalation. In addition, supplemental

    oxygen should be provided.

    Deployment Tips

Be Sae. Always put saety rst. Never expose

yoursel, other reghters, or occupants to

    unnecessary risks.

Inormation is Critical. Conduct a complete

tactical size-up o the re. The more inormation

you have about the re, the more eective a

deployment will be. Communicate clearly yourintent to use the ARApRo Condensed Aerosol

    Technology device.

Contain Aerosol. Limit venting. Openings such

as doors and windows should be kept shut until

the device has done its job and crews are ready to

    overhaul with water.

Deploy Low and Near Seat o Fire. Throw the

device at the lowest point and as close to the seat

    o the re as possible.

Be Ready. Time matters. Always take an ARA

SAfetypRowith you to the structure. This will

ensure deployment readiness at the earliest

    possible moment.

Carry Two. Always have a second device available

in the event that the re is too big, too vented or

any other circumstance prevents a single unit rom

adequately knocking down and containing the re.

Deploy Beore Water. Water mist will wash

the aerosol out o the air and eliminate itseectiveness.
