Threats• Frost has been an important threat to the coffee farmers, especially in Son

La, as it damaged more than 1000 ha in late 2013.

• Increasing coffee plantation to sloping area (of more than 20o) heightens

without planning and sustainable farming practices on slopes, the risk to

deforestation, and increases the severe impacts from frost, strong winds,

water conservation and soil erosion.

• Limitation in scale of production require to increase in the output

productivity, and quality improvement.

• Old traditional and small-scale production of coffee in Son La and Dien

Bien without compliance with technical requirements as well as

requirements for sustainable production is the biggest challenge in

building and protecting brand reputation of local coffee to enhance

product value.

• The fluctuation of export price reduces incentive to farmers to continue

their investment in coffee fields.
